Emotions is for the anxious 20-somethings who don’t know why they’re feeling sad and depressed and they can’t explain it so they just detach themselves and disappear for a while because they can’t deal with it and it’s a lot. in conclusion, the song feels like it’s written for half of the fandom.
Here’s the thing about Emotions: I love it so much. I love the variety on the album. But this song is not for the casual listener-it is absolutely for their fan base. It is an emo throwback to SGFG and a total Michael track. It is one of the reasons they have such a dedicated fandom-they pay attention to what their fans want and love. They did it so well with the whole album!
I think the "cringy-ness" of the lyrics in emotions is very purposeful. You'll notice the writers on this song are the same as 2011, so it's not that they aren't capable of writing different, more "deep" lyrics. I think it was intentional to fit in the genre they were going for (very emo, punk ballad stuff) and to give people the vibe of SGFG. Like troy said, if you lean into it, it works. The style isn't everyones cup of tea, which I get, but the guys are definitely more self aware than you'd think.
I love Emotions because it feels like an emo throwback song, something they would definitely have put out in their earlier years. Also, the stripped back, more simple lyrics and instrumentation remind me of the kind of numbness that comes with depression; I totally enjoy the irony of a song theatrically titled "Emotions" having lyrics that intentionally dismiss and downplay the depth of the singer's hurt. Michael delivers this amazingly glib tone which I interpret as a presentation of apathy, realistically reflecting the feeling of being emotionally exhausted and burnt out. Yet at the same time, he manages to sound really genuine and raw, allowing the listener to hear through the charade.
yesss you explained it perfectly. I love michaels voice because it's just so expressive, like you said so genuine and raw. I think out of all of them michael's voice makes me focus on the lyrics the most
Will forever be hyped about how bloodhound could be a play on bloodline from Luke’s solo album and Greyhound is from Ashton’s solo project. Combining two names and sounds. So sneaky lol!
here’s the thing about emotions: either you get it or you don’t. if you get it, this song feels like someone’s finally understanding everything you’ve been struggling to put into words for a long time, and if you don’t get it, it’s just an okay song with lyrics that are too simplistic. for me, this song hits unbelievably close to home bc of how well it captures the feeling of depression without an obvious reason for it and the guilt that follows.
Right, because the lyrics do sound so simple & surface level but that further highlights how depression can feel, like it just feels bad on the surface with no deeper/solvable reason
I have no idea how people don't love emotions. I've cried everytime I've listened to it because it's so relatable into putting so many people's feelings into words
I feel like 5sos haves this side that is like darker. Like Youngblood, TEARS!, MORE, Tomorrow Never Dies, TEETH, ELA, etc. They give me that dark vibe. Idk it’s like villain main character type of vibe
"Emotions" is very special to me. I've been stuggling with a kind of social anxiety for 3 years now because of the pandemic. I'm scared to talk in front of people, to go out on my own, to talk with people on my own, to ask something on my own. I'm 15 and I don't know how I'm gonna become independent. This word freaks the hell out of me. And that song hits me really hard. No one gets me and I don't know why the pandemic made me like this. I'm doing my best and I guess that's the best I can do. I try but I can't do it.
native of mine you're 15. maybe 16 by now. you've got your whole life to learn how to connect with people, and everyone learns at their own pace! you can start with people you relate to more so it's safer feeling, or just try a bunch of things and see if anything helps your brain, you've got time, you're already finding stuff you relate to and getting to know yourself that is so so valuable and one day, something to feel sure in, confident in. not everything in life revolves around interacting with people too, you can do so much online if you need to as well! like i feel like at your age we're all chomping at the bit to feel free and independent but the truth is we always do rely on other people for things, even people who don't want to admit it still do. even the boys in 5sos have been holding each other up since they were your age! and idk if it's a helpful way to think about it, ignore me if not--but when you do ask things and talk to people all you're doing is inviting them as far as you both feel comfortable with into that little bubble of interdependence. give and take. we all have that, all have needs met by other people and life is so much better for that. and everyone is scared by people they don't feel comfortable around, certainly not all to the same degree and certainly not everyone is understanding about it, but there are people who get it. so many of us. look at the thousands, millions even of fans of this song! we don't all 100% get it but there's compassion for your experience and an openness to just create safe spaces wherever we can (and i'm thinking back to the sgfg era now and the whole new broken scene thing). your people are out there i promise
@@arielgillespie8 wooooow thank you, really. I wasn't expecting someone to answer me tbh but I'm glad! Thank you for your words :) I'm feeling a bit better now but it's not it yet, I'm still trying :) I have seen them live this year also and that was THE best moment of my 2023. I felt alive and free, I've cried the whole show, soundcheck was perfect... I feel like I really needed this more than anything.
I adore Emotions! it has such beautiful, relatable, more grounded lyrics. It's like a sweet milkshake at a bar refreshing, heart warming, such a nice cute emotional break.
Does anyone else automatically think of how he would edit this😂 Like him pointing to himself in the mirror while dancing 16:00 He would shakily zoom into his reflection😂😂 basically he’s just as funny w out the edits
it just feels so good & real! maybe he wasn't totally feeling it for the first review, but I just want to say I'm glad he put out this video it's amazing
emotions is on my top 5, but i feel like the thing about the song is if you compare it to the other songs in the album it feels simpler both lyrically and sonically thats why maybe some people feels like it's kinda "meh", that doesn't mean it's a bad song, it's a really good one imo, and i think it would've fit perfectly to be in the same album as 2011 if they made a whole album with that sound
sgfg is what got all of us through the break they took from music to come back with the Youngblood album. Emotions is a flash back to the sgfg album that we all needed.
about the joke he talks about at 25:21, it's: bloodhound- 5sos greyhound- Ashton bloodline- Luke and there's also youngblood, flatline & red line, that also gets me to red desert lol now the real question: are the songs "grey youth" and "flat desert" coming up in 5sos6? I guess we'll have to wait for the answer
I didn't know there were even deluxe songs, I listen on Apple Music and this is the version they have on there. I will say that I thought it was weird Red Line wasn't the end, because it sounds like the end of the album and I didn't know that that was the actual end of the regular album.
Moodswings supremacy‼️I heard it the first time and kind of brushed it off and then I was listening to it the other day and my brain went 💡its so fucking good🤭🤭
Just one more time: If you haven't heard everything from Superbloom I would really like a reaction before you mostly stop with reactions 😂 If you already heard everything (it is already 2 years old after all) a Review like you did for main 5sos5 would be great as well. (I swear this is the last time I will comment this 😉)
in my opinion, the thing with emotions is that it is mostly expected that talking about what and how you feel will always result in a very clear, cohesive, deep description but thats simply not whats going to happen 100% of the time - you can talk about your emotions and not know exactly whats going on
24:25 I can also call it my guilty pleasure bc even if there are some things in the song that I wouldn't have liked I still like the song as a whole idk why
dd he just say that emotions is a "fun little bop"? excuse me sir where is this song fun?? I'm literally crying my eyes out every time I'm listening to it 😂
ok listen you mentioned the driver era and i know ross is naked a lot BUT THE BAND IS SO GOOD!! his brother rocky produces a bunch of their stuff and they're just SO GOOD pls check them out
honestly, emotions' not one of my faves but I don't dislike it, I wish Michael would have play a little more with his voice, cuz I prefer songs where the singer almost shout. I don't know how to explain it in English but the bridge is my fav part tho
i know what you mean. i love emotions so much. there were just so many opportunities in the song, especially the bridge, where he could have just belted out the words which would’ve truly pulled the whole song together. but idk, i think the song is perfect anyway
Everyone says the flatline chorus is a calum but it's not. the lyrics of 'Genius' can be edited by the user at will, so it can be wrong. If you read the flatline official credits, the lead vocal is luke alone. If Calum had sang the chorus, Calum would have been in the lead vocal credits too, but no.
wait they’re talking about the song “haze” like him watching a reaction video to the song haze from the album 5sos5 but I wish he was shoutouting you out💔
