2:56 _BubbleBeam_ is weaker than _Ice Beam_ in Red&Blue in all situations for Articuno. In Generation I, Fire-type Pokémon don't have a resistance to Ice-type moves. Only Ice and Water types resist it. _BubbleBeam_ is 65 × 2 = *130* BP while _Ice Beam_ is 95 × 1.5 = *142.5* BP, almost 10% higher. Plus: a frozen Pokémon is a death sentence in Generation I. Against Ice-types, _BubbleBeam_ is *65* BP, while _Ice Beam_ is 95 × 1.5 ÷ 2 = *71.25* BP, meaning that _BubbleBeam_ will be always inferior to _Ice Beam_ for Articuno in Generation I. It has better PP (20 vs 10), so _BubbleBeam_ is still useful.

1:53 That's actually not entirely true Sure Mewtwo and Mew are the most powerful Pokémon there but thats not entirely because of their typing; Their absurd stats and movepool is the real problem For my money the best type is Normal, for a few reasons. 1. The top 3 pokémon in OU are all pure Normal (and none of them are legendary) 2. Fighting types absolutely suck in this gen so they've effectively no weakness 3. STAB Body Slam and Hyper Beam Two of the best moves in the gen and they have a bonus on it (Keep in mind this is before Hyper Beam had you recharge if you knocked out the opponent. Body Slam also cant paralyze Normal types)

Blizzard freezes 30% of the time in the Japanese Gen I mainline games making Articuno more broken. Articuno and Zapdos are equally matched against each other although Zapdos is faster. All three birds slightly outpower Mewtwo's Psychic (Articuno's Blizzard, Zapdos's Thunder, and Moltres's Fire Blast each total 62640 vs 54810 for Mewtwo's Psychic). Mewtwo can outpower them back in Gen I by using Amnesia. Mew can learn any move. They're all amazing, but Moltres isn't too game breaking. Bubblebeam is stronger than Blizzard vs Rhydon unless Blizzard is STAB.

Articuno and Zapdos were both really good in-game. Articuno’s Blizzard was the most powerful unboosted special attack in the game. And Zapdos having Drill Peck was excellent. Moltres, however, was terrible in game. Horrible move pool. It couldn’t even learn flamethrower.

@@ShinyShilla Leer is index number 43. Flamethrower is 53. Fire Blast is 126. Clearly the typo was for Flamethrower, not Fire Blast. Additionally, if you look at Pokemon movepools in gen 1, you'll find Flamethrower is used analogously to Hydro Pump, Thunder, and Blizzard. @Owlr4ider

All 3 are absolutely overrated. Non legendary Pokémon like Gyarados and Starmie outperform all 3 of the birds quite easily. Many other Pokémon have a similar performance. Like there isn't a massive difference between Zapdos and Jolteon, in fact Jolteon is occasionally the superior choice thanks to Flying's glaring weaknesses(like Ice) and the fact that Flying itself doesn't cover particularly important types. In fact Moltres is actually the best of the 3 birds, in the sense that he's what Charizard was meant to be, a proper Fire and Flying Pokémon with access to powerful moves from both types. Where Moltres falls short is that he doesn't naturally learn most of those moves, particularly of the Fire variety, so you have to burn TMs on him but than he's a legendary bird so 1 of the better candidates for TM usage. Still, Fire is incredibly weak in gen 1 so you don't really need it in the first place, and being Flying is a double edged sword rather than a clear advantage over the mono Fire types like Ninetales. So yeah, all 3 are pretty fun and all but either come in extremely late or require a massive detour. Articuno is the only one you get rather naturally IIRC so there's that. At least they all come online at level 50 so it's not like you have to grind them after getting them, well aside from Moltres who has a pretty terrible move set and learns Sky Attack very late. Anyway they don't really offer anything unique to the table and are all easily replaced by non legendary alternatives. If Flying was better than they'd have an edge, but being the double edged sword that it is, meh...

Moltres is the worst considering how late you catch it in the game and the time you need to level it up to have a chance against the Elite 4. Also Gen 1 Fire types are just bad and don't really help in the game at all based on Weaknesses on pokemon Types. Articuno is good just because the FRZ Status stays until the opponents pokemon Faints, however since the Kanto Region is half water based there are better water types to have in your team such as Starmie having an Ice Beam since again Ice types are bad at their defences. Even if it has more bulk weakness in Fire, Fighting, Electric and Rock is too much. Also considering that the Articuno Cave is in the middle of nowhere and having you to solve a "puzzle" to get it just a waste of time. Zapdos is the best in my opinion out of all 3 of the legendary birds, first of all it's the most cool looking and you have an easy access to it. Gets 2 Stab Attacks, Drill Peck & Thunderbolt, can also Paralyze pokemons (i see it as a nerfed FRZ) It's faster out of all 3 of them which in Gen 1 Faster = More Critical Chance = Double the damage. And all in all is the best Electric Type pokemon to have in your team. Not sure if earthquake can hit it since it's part a flying type, so it cancels out it's electric weakness and the only Super Effective move against it are Rock Type moves which i don't remember are good in Gen 1. However everyone has their favorite and with a little bit of exp grind each and every pokemon can just powerthrough the game, so doesn't really matter which one is the best if you taking your time and don't make a speedrun or don't want to use those pokemons in a competitive play.

Articuno and Moltres, yeah. Their barren movepools do them no favours. Being limited to STAB and Normal moves for coverage in Gen 1 hurts them. Cuno gets BubbleBeam but it doesn't hit anything hard that Ice Beam doesn't hit harder. Starting out with Ice Beam is really good though. Moltres is just kind of sad because of its terrible movepool and Fire types not being particularly great in Gen 1. Its outclassed by Charizard despite its stats I'd argue simply because Charizard has a good movepool. Zapdos gets its props with its dual STAB even if it's stopped hard by Rock/Ground types (Hyper Beam being its strongest option which won't even leave a dent). All 3 of them have the strongest unboosted Special Attacks in the game with Blizzard, Thunder and Fire Blast so they have that going for them and even resists don't particularly enjoy those moves if they don't have the Special stats to back them up.

I cannot stand when younger people pronounce Moltres wrong. The names are based off of Spanish: uno, dos, and tres. When you pronounce it like trez (rhymes with Pez) it makes the video unwatchable. I'm aware a couple of times the anime pronounced it like that. Doesn't excuse the ignorance.

It's cringe I know - so being a native spanish speaker I gotta get better at emphasizing that ArticUNO, ZapDOS, and MolTRES

"fairly late in the game" funny thing is you can probably find 2 of the 3 with only 3 badges, and in frlg, probably all 3 of them with 4 badges, due to moltres no longer being in victory road. (obviously they are supposed to be late game encounters though)
@pokerebels
@pokerebels Год назад
Yeah there is definitely a way to get them much much earlier!
@bookmew1081
@bookmew1081 Год назад
You need to beat Brock, Misty, Erika (Strength), Koga (Surf), & Blaine (Access to One Island) in order to reach Moltres in FRLG. You could get Zapdos with only 3 Badges, although I don't think anyone would want to get these birds without Flying. Likewise, Articuno needs 4 Badges because of Strength. Gen 1 you could glitch your way past Brock & potentially use the Stadium Shortcut to Skip Misty & get Zapdos with only Koga defeated in 1 of the weirdest runs possible that has you travel Rock Tunnel backward in the dark to get to the Power Plant. You need to use Cut to reach Erika meaning you need to beat Misty as well to get Strength for Articuno in Gen 1.

@@bookmew1081 Yes that! The strats for how you can do this is wild

@@pokerebels Gen 1 games were notable for how much freedom they offered the player. Of course, you need either Surf or Cut to challenge Surge, you need Cut to challenge Erika, & you need Surf to challenge Blaine. All 7 other Badges are required to enter Viridian Gym. As a result of this freedom there are plenty of weird runs possible. FireRed & LeafGreen removed the ability to enter Saffron City early by requiring the Tea from Celadon. Still, you can skip Surge & Erika, challenge Sabrina before Koga, or challenge Blaine before Sabrina. The new Gen 9 games actually go further than Gen 1 in terms of the freedom of path your journey can take.
