Another reason why we need PR reforms. The tories (like Labour) are a mish-mash of different parties
@fubar12345
@fubar12345 3 месяца назад
True. It would be great to get the extremists out of both main parties, the current system effectively legitimises their madness. The culture wars is being driven by extremists on the right and left. The population majority - moderate centrists - are caught in the middle of what is effectively a large scale abusive relationship. The far right wants to destroy democracy, the far left wants to destroy capitalism, both seek to replace it with totalitarian authoritarianism. They won't admit it, not all of them anyway, but history has shown the end result of their kinds of ideology. Never again.

As a Canadian, this is so déjà vu. While nothing is exactly the same, history seems to like themes. The Progressive Conservative Party (colloquially: the Tories) ruled from about '79 to '93 (there was a minority Liberal government in the middle briefly). After that, they imploded spectacularly from mismanagement of the economy and national debt. The replacement party, in the eyes of the public, was called the Reform Party. They were far right instead of centre right. They became the official opposition instead of the Tories. Later they rebranded as The Canadian Alliance. Later they moved a little more centre right, bought the trademark from the remnants of the PC party, and rebranded (again) as the Conservative Party (aka. the Tories). While the exact course may not follow, if Reform UK gets more seats than the Tories in the next election and then rebrands themselves as The British Alliance... this exists as record to prove to myself I'm not insane.

@SaintGerbilUK
@SaintGerbilUK 3 месяца назад
@wotermelon_ no this happened within the past week. There's not been a video about it, and no Erskine May (not the constitution) requires that opposition days, it was the SNP's, propose legislation and is voted yes or no. Yet Hoyle broke the rules by allowing Labour amendments to it after being pressured into it by Keir Starmer. It's likely the speaker gets replaced with multiple letters of no confidence. Incidentally with the same root issue that they're going after Lee Anderson for.

@Afterthoughtbtw
@Afterthoughtbtw 3 месяца назад
PR encourages extremism from all sides. There's a reason the UK doesn't have an equivalent of AfD, or FN, or countless other parties. Our system requires that the candidates are those who will represent their constituency - that means that every individual must get elected individually. PR means you have a list of candidates in order of choice of party, meaning that if you want an MP from further down the list, but not the more extreme one further up the list... well, tough. Also, worth pointing out that our system forces MPs to represent everyone equally, even those who didn't vote for them (although if you are unaware of what goes on in local politics, I can see why you might not realise how much that is the case), whereas PR means that MPs only job is to represent an ideology. Which again pushes MPs to extremes. Give me our system over that any day of the week. Of course, it would be better still with a transferable vote system, which again means that the person elected represents the broadest possible number of people.

Because our society has become largely dominated by cowards who'd rather stick their heads in the sand and let our society fall apart to then scapegoat the right (Who by definition want to preserve society) than to risk calling out barbarism and making the unpleasant decisions that need to be done to save our society. We are plagued by a culture of lethargy and oikophobia that combined with out of touch and incompetent governments have made many people utterly disillusioned with the fate of wider society. Coming from an American, this is odd. At lesst where I live, that would hardly cause a blip in the media (depending on the level of who said that, of course). Islamophobia is still incredibly widespread and accepted in America, at least from what I have seen.

Signaling someone, specially a political rival, just on grounds of ethnicity, religious or cultural background seems awful. Criticize him for his actions or words, not for his origins. I'm not British but I doubt Khan, as a Labour politician, is exactly an islamist/yihadist... That is different however from critizicing a religion and the perverse influence it may have on society, specially if it's backwards thibking and denies the rights of a good part of its citizens. Very different topics.

Everyone makes the note about FPTP causing big tent parties. And that is true. But it’s also clearly Sunak’s lack of leadership overall. Say what you want about any of his predecessors since Cameron. But they all fell on one side, One Nation or far on the right. Sunak has been consistently trying to play both sides. And when you half-ass where you stand it all goes to hell.

I think there's 2 issues crippling the tories atm, coming from an outsider, using my perspective of politics both here in Aus and abroad, and just the general shifts in politics world-wide the first, and this is not in Aus, but in the US and UK it's crippling both, FPTP voting system, come on guys, we're in the 21st century now, wake up and use Preferential, it's a lot more flexible, and allows people to align with parties that align with their politics a lot better, this is both for voters and pollies, it also allows people to vote for smaller parties/candidates without "wasting their vote" the second, and this I've felt here in Australia, badly in the US, and in this Tory implosion, the far right know their days are numbered, so they wanna hold onto power and make decisions for as long as possible, and try to drag enough people from centrist views to the right, they know their days are numbered because look at worldwide voting positions, the right drops off a cliff when you go under about 30, 35, the far right off a bigger cliff, the Liberal/National coalition in Australia is being dragged further right, the Tories in the UK, the Republicans in the US, I'm sure if I looked into other nations similar stories can be found, whilst maybe I'm not bang on the cause, I still think it's a reasonable enough theory, these old, far right people doing their damage whilst they're still in power before the younger generation finally takes over for countries like Australia with PF, I think it's being felt even harder because they know how numbered their days are, it's looking like here that give it 4-5 more election cycles and the Coalition will be the third party and the two duking it out will be the Centre-Left labor and the Left-wing Greens party, the political landscape is changing and I do think these right-wing parties know it, and that fear may be driving these further right sections of all of them

Labour have no issue with what a woman is. They acknowledge and accept the legal definition as laid out in the gender recognition act 2004 and the gender equality act 2010. Why does sunak , who issues gender recognition certificates, have such difficulty with the law of the land. If he doesn't like it, he should present a bill to parliament, not make snide comments that alienate law abiding citizens, whilst simultaneously making them targets for uneducated bigots.
