I'm so glad I went with the double cab on my Tundra. Among my usual passengers (fishing and hunting buddies), the double cab is just fine, no complaint from these guys and they are all over 6' tall. The full bed size is necessary in my book. Landscaping and various projects would have been hampered if I would have chosen a CrewMax with a small bed. My ATV needs a full sized bed too!
I wanted the crew but I couldnt justify the extra cost and I wanted 5.7 4×4 and mods and all that so I went with the double. Ive had guys in the back for 30 min trips and a five hour trip with three dudes in the back. Also if I didnt have the extra foot in the bed I would have been fucked with all the shit we had too. Lastly sure if they enjoyed it but they didnt complain so whatever.
I'm with you bro. The 5ft. Box is not practical and aesthetically just doesn't look good. Looking into buying a 2014 model. Thank you for your post. It helped tremendously as I'm 6'4" and my buddies are pretty big dudes also. No fishing but alot of camping trips.
Right, and crewmax short truck bed with tailgate open and cargo secured by ropes and hooks will do just fine to haul occasional short distance bulk load from hardware stores or Costco. Also with crewmax you get AC vents for back row.
The nice thing about a Tundra CrewMax or DoubleCab is that both trucks look great and there is plenty of room inside the cab on either version. If you want more cab space for passengers or luggage choose the CrewMax and if you want more bed space choose the DoubleCab. However, if you want a Platinum or 1794 version they only come in the CrewMax version. Thank you for the video!
If I ever get a different Tundra then it will be a DC. But my kids are teens now so the back seat for my tall kids won't be an issue in the next snap of the fingers of time. Excellent video to reference for individuals trying to decide.
If you need more backseat room then the double cab offers..... just turn in your man card and get a minivan. A pick up is for hauling.... the larger bed of the DC is what you buy a pick up for!
The Crewmax has the center armrest with cup holders and two rear vents. And the full drop down window is nice with defroster. I have a 2016 crewmax Pro in white. They do sell a aftermarket under storage unit but you have to cut the carpet out and it isn't that deep. When I carry TVs when it's raining the back seats folded up offer a lot of room.
+LESLIEx317537 The Dcab has that same center armrest/storage. The only difference is instead of rear vents, it has a fold down cup holder and usb jack 👍🏼
I meant the back seat has a center fold out armrest for the rear passengers with two cup holders. My friend has a DC not a Pro but I've been in the backseat a few times. That's how I know the differences.
The lid on that rear seat storage seems almost pointless. Maybe if you have the seat up it protects it somewhat, but it's flimsy so if you stepped on it something would break.
I keep looking at the double cab thinking it’s to small, then I realized it has more rear legroom than my frontier crew cab. So now I can get a big boy truck lol
The double cab is the on Tundra configuration I'd buy. It's a no brainer in my opinion because it's the only way you can get a 6.5 ft cargo bed and the back seat still has enough space for most people. I think it's about 35" of legroom, which is about as much as a typical midsize sedan. Crew cab trucks have gotten ridiculous with the back seat size if you ask me. It's a waste in my opinion when you can only get a tiny 5.5 ft bed. The only problem I see with the double cab is the small rear door windows because it's compromises visibility. That's not a function of the double cab configuration, it was just a stupid design decision by Toyota. They should have been the full width of the door instead of cutting them off unnecessarily. Even still, I wouldn't buy a crew cab.
Can you do another video like this on the 2022 please? I think Toyota reduced the legroom significantly. It looks like the doublecab legroom is so small now that it’s basically non functional.
I have a 2014 tundra 5.7 4x4 crewmax- only draw back I've found is there is absolutely no storage area...under seat storage & this revised model doesnt have the 2 glove box's ..... i found having a simple socket set or tape measure ends up being a hassle to store. back seats lift up to a flat floor :(
+No Ma'am 979 yea, i don't understand them taking away the extra glove box from the 07-13 model. They do make an aftermarket kit for underseat storage in the crewmax. Google search if you're interested 👍🏼
This video answers my question , crew max is great if you want to run a limo service ,double cab is perfect with two adults in back seat for what you've shown ,dodge quad cab back seat no good I've ridden in one to small.
I’m 6 feet tall and test drove a crew max cause they didn’t have any doubles on the lot. I didn’t need the front seat all the way back so I’m hoping the double cab will work for my tall kids.

+Frank Moreno i believe the crewmax has vents in the back. As far as dcab, ive never had a complaint from any passengers back there 👍🏼 The AC system itself is very good
How does a baby seat do in the back seat? I’m selling my Tacoma because we have a baby and 2 older almost teenagers. My wife drives a 4 runner and I have a Tacoma but I’m looking at getting either the double cab or crew max tundra
I'm savin for a 1st gen double cab. I know this vid is old. But I would LOVE to one day after high school trade it in for a new one. My uncle has an 07 double cab and man that's big. But yeah totally get the crewmax is HUMONGUS. Wayyy too big for me even if I did have a family haha. I'm 5" 3' ish myself so read seat room wouldn't be an issue.
Am doing preliminary research cause I'll be buying a truck this month and need something that I can put a car seat in for my 1 year old. Do you think the double cab would suffice for this?
I was looking at the 2nd gen double cab. It essentially replaced the 1st gen access cab with a little more room. I ended up with an 06 double cab instead. More leg room and the rear window slides down.
I'm kind of dumbfounded why only the passenger rear seat has a pouch and behind it for storing things but not the driver's seat? 🤔. Also they could have put a armrest in the rear seat between the seats for the passengers in the back somewhere to put their arms in the middle
Thanks for the video . I love my DBL. cab. For my needs I needed a bigger bed then back seat.... Hey TundraDude, I just traded in my 2013 Fiat, and bought a 2015 Tundra 2wd, SR5 double cab, and since its the two of us, plus the dog who'll be inhabiting the rear seat area, we don't need a lot of room; however one thought, besides putting up both rear seats, is there a way I can fold down the rear seat back?
There's a DIY mod for the double cab rear seat so that it can fold down by modifying where the back of the rear seats hook up. It's easy and cheap, still allows backrest to lock properly. Google it and you'll find it. 👍
Hey dude ! Nice job i really like your channel ! It helped me a lot to make my big decision, buy a trd pro ! But there's still a question , i'm living in switzerland , and the most important importer told me that the trd pro can't get a sunroof, nevertheless i've saw videos of trd pro's with it . Cheers :)

wow OK x) as far as I know they are made in the same plant ? they are pretty rare to find in them in the USA and for the small research that I've made pretty unexistant in CA(yeah I've searched there too without knowing for the roof x)) do you have an idea of the order time from the order to delivery? thanks :)
+Gravityyy3D they are all made in San Antonio TX. Im not really sure why Canada gets the sunroof and we dont but yea, same plant. The turn around time for ordering and delivery all depends on where you are and how long it takes the plant to build your truck
I gonna order it through an importer so he gonna make the order in my name is know that the boat transportation is like 3 week but I only want to get an average time of build line 1-2 month or more European delays like 6 months ? :p it'll be my first imported cat so I try to fetch some Infos here and there :p
+Gravityyy3D i have no clue as far as Euro delays. My Tundra was built 3 weeks before I received it. But ive also heard for some people it took 3 months.
Maybe because I run a Tundra channel and need to field both views, ever think of that? If you need more bed, double cab is the answer. Adults can fit, but would be more comfortable in a Crewmax. By the way, ive owned 4 double cabs and now a Crewmax.
TundraDude34 you're the leading source of tundra info and opinion on RU-vid, of course your opinion is important. What made you move to the crewmax? You mentioned kids and wife could both fit in the double cab, here I was going hell yeah the dilemma is over! But now I'm back to pondering. I'm a contractor I drive a Sierra with a 6.5 bed currently but it's old.. I want the crewmax for cabin space for kids, dog and gear, should I not bother with the double cab and just figure out the cargo problem later?
I think your best bet overall is head over to the dealership and do a detailed test drive and walk around. Bring a few crew guys or fam to sit in the back to tell you there thoughts. I never had an issue with the D Cab. Hauled 5 adults in my 09 down to Richmond and back (11-12 hours total) with no complaints.
