Many of us are starting to fear amusement rides. It seems like every other week we’re being exposed to amusement ride accidents happening around the world and the media is going wild questioning as to whether any amusement ride is safe. With over 475,000,000 people visiting theme parks each year how can we be assured that we're safe in what is quickly becoming a favourite holiday destination?

Nothing hurts a theme park owner worse than an accident on a ride. Unlike airlines, the amusement parks know they are dealing with a market that is spoiled for choice. A single accident can seriously hurt an amusement parks bottom line for years to come.

I always hate when the GP make a big deal of a roller coaster stopping on a lift hill... The fact that it stopped means the ride is working correctly by preventing a crash, then the news makes it seem like it's a safety issue, while really it's a safety precaution.

@@benelliott2968 Ikr, I was on El Toro and the Anti-Rollbacks only kick in when the train slows down, one time when my train was cresting over the lift, the anti-rollbacks sounded and the GP behind me said "Wat was dat?"

@ryan_n05 5 лет назад
@@benelliott2968 They don't know that, but, yeah, you are completely safe if the ride has stopped. *But*, just because you are safe doesn't mean that you feel safe! I once got stuck on top of Cannibal, at Lagoon, and while I knew that I was completely safe, it's scary being up 208 ft in the air!
@coastaku1954
@coastaku1954 5 лет назад
@Quick Caliber I didn't say anything about the Block System, nor did I make the most GP Comment, Millennium Force and El Toro's lifts are extremely silent thanks to their cable lift and their Anti-Rollback systems, You only hear them sometimes when the train's slow down on the lift. When Millennium Force's kicks in, you can hear it across the whole park, due to the train only really ever slowing at the top of the lift hill, same with El Toro. Plus I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about cause I'm in the 100+ club and have ridden El Toro nearly 40-50 times, 24 of which were in one day.

As a big thrill ride fan: Thank you! This video will def make more people understand all the safety mechanisms of theme park rides. People are usually afraid of things because they lack knowledge about them. Although cost is often a factor when accidents are the fault of the park itself, most accidents are still caused by the guest's stupidity: People being in places they shouldn't be (a 6ft fence with signs saying 'DANGER!' should ring a bell that you shouldn't climb over them to retrieve your $4 sunglasses...), parents sneaking their kids on rides while they don't meet the height requirement (I've seriously seen idiots on Disney park fb groups recommend others to tell kids to stand on their toes, or to stuff their shoes with tissues), ignoring the warnings (don't ride if things are wrong with your heart, brain, back, ...), ...
@spacebug30
@spacebug30 5 лет назад
@Funtime Luna Just because you survived going on a coaster when not tall enough, doesn't mean you didn't greatly increase your risk of getting hurt. Don't do stupid things, the rules are there for a reason, a rollercoaster ride isn't worth dying for.

Wow, very cool video, explained perfectly everything that had to be explained ! Though, I think that for some people (like me) the scary part is that once you get in the rollercoaster, anything could happen (with low statistics ofc but there's a chance, and that stays in your head), and contrary to a storm where you could get struck by lightning or a car accident, you can't do anything to prevent it. You're stuck inside the train for the duration of the ride, in the hands of the ride operator, the staff members, the technicians, the weather, heck even other passengers. So it shares common points with being scared of driving a car, except that when you drive a car, you drive it, it depends on you. This unability to control the situation is the most terrifying thing for me in a rollercoaster. PS) I frickin' love rollercoasters, or any ride in general, I am _addicted_ to theme parks

Human error is a big factor. The smiler at Alton Towers had a massive incident due to human negligence. The rides safety features did engage although the operators had overridden them causing a train to slam into another trapping guests and resulting in some guests to lose limbs.

The only thing that you said that was incorrect was "the height requirement is not because the park thinks your child isn't mature enough for the attraction". That is precisely why the height requirement was instated. It's universal that a 36" child has developed enough to withstand the forces of a mild kid ride locomotion, while they are not developed enough for a ride with a 42" requirement. As an infant, your head is 1/3 of your total body weight. As an adult, it accounts for only 10-12% your feet are also tiny in comparison to the rest of the body as an infant. From the top down, your development in age sees a greater increase. Your head is the least grown body part from infancy to adulthood while your feet are the most grown increasing by 1100% as opposed to the head which only increases by about 90%. So in effect, the smaller you are, the more cranium you have to hold upright in opposition to body size. This puts more strain on the neck in younger patrons than that of more mature patrons. Neck injuries caused by rides in the 50s, 60s, and 70s are the reason the medical community came up with ride height restrictions that are espoused by insurance carriers to maintain rider safety. But the height requirement has absolutely nothing to do with riders falling out of rides. It's about the spinal column and the amount of pressure it can withstand based on age and height.

If you consider all things, Roller coasters are the safest mode of transportation. You are infinitely more likely to die on the way to the park then on the park's ride itself.
