I live in America and am friends with a guy in Florida who's last name is Drake. His family tree traces back to English immigrants in the 1700s. So, yes, there are Drakes in America.
Got a few Mrs Drake in my locality, but we do have some explorers - Dan Snow, Tony Hawks and there must be some that do go (bottom of the ocean, etc) where no man has gone before - and importantly, return.
here in Chile, Francis Drake is a pretty well known name, there's a passage named after him near Cape Horn, he was injured by the Mapuche and he famously sacked our most important port: Valparaíso. Also, there was an animated show called "El Ojo del Gato", where the ghost of Drake was one of the villains, I remember watching it when i was a kid.
My late grandmother's maiden name was Drake, and there was actually a legend within her family that they were descendants of Sir Francis Drake. Looks like that was simply a legend. Maybe they were descendants of one of his unknown siblings, and that fact got distorted as it was passed down over time.
Had a student in my class at school, who's mothers maiden name was Drake who claimed to be descended from his Uncle. He also had 12 Brothers supposedly. similar story as William Wallace, my Grandmother was a Wallace, Claims to be many great cousins of William Wallace, not sure its true, but I get a kick of pointing out anytime someone claims to be directly descended from him as he either had no Children, or they were all killed off, sources vary, and sources are pretty good on heads of nobility houses even from that era.
Two suggestions for videos: • the two Galicias; why do rhey have the same name? These were mentioned in other videos, but why not do them together? • child-naming rules that aren't actually rules, but people mistakenly think they are? Specifically, that Catholics "must" name a child for a saint, and that Jews "cannot" name a child after someone still alive Both are *customs*, not regulations.
It actually use to be a regulation of sorts in the Catholic Church with "Church Names" that would sort of act as a middle name. However, Church Names were done away with after Vatican II.
I'm Jewish and I believe Sephardic Jews can and often do name their children after living relatives, while Ashkenazi Jews name their children after deceased relatives.
Pretty much every historical figure seems to have problematic elements, teaches us the lesson that we should look at every person warts and all and not worship them.
Until just now, I didn't know Drake had the name Drake in his name. I just knew him as Aubrey Graham, an actor on Degrassi T.N.G., a spinoff of The Kids of Degrassi Street and just thought he chose Drake as a Rap name. TBH, I thought he was really a parapalegic until his Rap career began.
Here in Panama Francis Drake is part of our history, he is famous for attacking the port of Portobello which was the wealthiest of Spanish ports in the Americas at that time, all the gold and silver from Peru arrived there before sailing to Spain, the Spaniards make a fair every year in the colonial era, eventually since Portobello was attacked several times by French and English pirates and filibusters the comercial activity was moved to Cartagena in Colombia. It is said that the lead coffin with Drake's body actually lays in Portobello's Bay. BTW Portobello means "Beautiful Port" and it was discovered by Christopher Colombus in his 3rd voyage and has several ruins from Colonial era. It is certainly a beatiful place and full of history.
You could have mentioned Oscar Hartzell. He was an American con-man who in the 1920s convinced thousands of people with the surname "Drake" that Sir Francis Drake's estate had never been probated, and they were all potential heirs to the vast fortune accumulating over 300 years. In reality, Hartzell simply lived off the "legal fees" paid by the claimants. The OG Francis Drake simply willed his estate to his second wife Elizabeth Sydenham and brother Thomas Drake.
Sir Francis had cousins who were made Baronets from Ash. One of these,Sir John Drake had a Daughter, who's son was Sir John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Sir Winston's 5xGreat Grandfather.amazing family tree!!
from wikipedia ... ''In fact Bernard Drake grandparents John Drake V 1474-1554 and his wife Margaret were also the grandparents of Sir Francis Drake _Bernard being descended from an older son and Francis descended from a younger son.'' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_baronets
The Drake's Y-DNA are part of haplogroup R-L664, and some of the closest pre-surname paternal relatives that I have. If any Drakes have done, or would like to do, DNA testing, let me know. It'd be really interesting to compare.
My great-grandmothers maiden name was Kathryn Drake, and my grandmother said we were related to Sir Francis Drake. I'm American btw, great-grandmother was born in South Dakota
I'm directly descendent from the Drakes. They're still around. edit to add, I descend from Thomas Drake, the puritan. Lesser nobility in Plymouth before this Plymouth. Massachusetts.
Good video, and I liked the parts where you went out to the statue and all that, but you really need a better mic for going out man. It was really hard to hear what you were saying. Only gripe with the video though, very nice history lesson and interesting name stuff too!
