Are there wheelchair accessible restrooms on airplanes? Here's a look at one.

A friend recently reached out asking about using a wheelchair accessible restroom on board one of our planes...she seemed a little anxious about getting on a plane without being sure that she could comfortably use the restroom. So, I filmed this brief video to familiarize her with what to expect.

This is an excellent video. I have flown for years and never knew about this option. Your company needs to share this with the mobility challenged community. It really opens up the sky for travel. You never know how important this is until you have a mobility challenged parent or friend.

this is the first video that touched on such a sensitive yet necessary need for those less mobile, all airlines should have this as standard issue, if they don't already, the actual setup would of been nice to see, but it still was a great video

Assembling that laboratory and putting it back together is actually quite a hassle. Lol! Sometimes I can't get it to lock back into its original position so in the end I have to Lock it and ask passengers to use the other lavatory in the front of the aircraft. The fact that it's a hassle should by no means even make you hesitate in using it! Other flight attendants are probably just much more successful in reassembling those walls. I'm a mess.

@@flightattendantstevenit's a hassle to get on a plane & pee on oneself & sit in more than 1-2 cups of urine in a diaper which will leak & potentially go into autonomic dysreflexia & have a stroke on an airplane because one needs to "simply" poop or pee. I have muscle/bladder spasms, cannot control the urine coming out. I can go without drinking for several hours & still have to pee later because sometimes it comes out Lil at a time. It's not easy, and I can't help it. Would love to travel & go to the beach. Accessible bathrooms on airplanes, hotel rooms, car rentals (equipped with handle bar) & beach access (no sand, for wheelchair)... until they get it together, no vacations for me. 😢

Thank you for the video. I would have liked to see the lavatory already transformed for wheelchair use so I could have a better idea on the accessibility of the restroom. FYI I am a wheelchair user due to a SCI.

Certainly make sure, when booking your ticket that you are on a Airbus spaceflex type of aircraft. In my airline, if you knew who I work for, we have 182 seats on the a320 spaceflex and 228 on the Airbus a321 spaceflex. Those configurations will let you know that it has handicapped accessible laboratories.

Thank you for sharing this video Steven. This was so informative. I have a blind older aunt that used to fly to Florida a few times a year and she always told me she hated it because she could not use the bathroom. She used a wheelchair to get on and off the plane. If I had of seen this video when she used to fly it would have really helped. I'm sure you are helping so many people. 😀

I’ve been on planes that have space for an aisle chair, but it was used for flight attendants’ bags. You have a very kind demeanor, but you make it sound easy. It is a challenge from beginning to end. Being in an aisle chair can be very difficult. Wheelchair users, don’t depend on the plane, it’s setup or any staff!
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven 2 месяца назад
I don't understand what you mean about flight attendants using an Isle chair for bags. The honestly makes zero sense. Using an file chair to transport our bags through an aisle would only complicate a very simple process. And yes, it's awkward to use an aisle chair, but it offers some possibility rather than none. I have to hope that's an improvement over having no options.

show the w/c in the lavatory. A para would need to transfer from the w/c to the toilet seat. I assume the w/c isn't self propelling. I suppose someone with you could aid in this maneuver.

Thanks for this video Steve… as a long term full time wheelchair user I have always had to come up with very ways around using the bathroom while flying. Would it be possible to see what the interior of the bathroom looks like in it wheelchair accessible configuration?
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven 3 месяца назад
Unfortunately, sometimes the walls are very tricky to get back together into it's original shape...that's not the passenger's concern at all...don't even hesitate to use it. But, it would be kind of awkward to explain to maintenance why I opened it up without a passenger. When opened into it's wheelchair accessible format, it's just two (very small) lavs put side by side.
@mitch64622
@mitch64622 5 месяцев назад
Are you able to show what the toilet seat itself looks like once it's lifted up? As a disabled traveler, I prefer the seat that has the horseshoe shaped seat that's open in the front.
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven 5 месяцев назад
Most of the toilet seats that I've seen are the horseshoe style that is open in the front. But it's not always the case. Sometimes a toilet seats are switched out or replaced with something that wasn't original. So I can't say that there's any consistency in the toilet seat. Sorry.

Hi Steven, one more question. can you tell me please on a Dreamliner on which side of the plane (looking from the entrance) is the accessible bathroom located? As my wife and I usually seat in H & K we would like to seat on the same side to move less inside the airplane. Thank you very much
@jacquelyns9709

Is there a weight limit on using those plane wheelchairs? What about people who use walkers. Is it OK for us to use seat backs to hang on to to walk down the aisle to use the bathroom? Do those handicapped bathrooms have raised toilets? Do the normal bathrooms have grabbars these days? I haven't flown in decades.
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven 6 месяцев назад
Sorry it took me a while to answer your question. Be on board wheelchairs have a maximum carry weight of 300 lb. You certainly can use the seat box to walk down the aisles. I do! Lol! The toilets aren't raised but they're pretty high off the ground. And yes there are assist handles in the lavs.
@thepanickedfoodie4198

Is there a place we can find this information easily, or is it best to call the airline and ask? I am a non-ambulatory wheelchair user who is going to be flying for the first time, but I am not sure if the aircraft I am flying on has this feature. It is a 737-800 series.
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven Год назад
I know that most Airbus planes have been fitted with spaceflex lavs. I don't know about other types of planes, so I'd contact the airline you're flying and find out if a wheelchair accessible lav is available. When on board we would assist as we can with an aisle chair...it's a very narrow wheelchair that would allow us to help a passenger to the lav and back to their seat.

My grandmother had a knee surgery where she can’t bend her knee. How can your airline accommodate a person like that? Can you show us the leg space
@flightattendantsteven
@flightattendantsteven 2 месяца назад
I don't know that any airline really can accommodate legs that can't bend, outside of some kind of first class area that's got space for sleeping. Maybe tickets could be purchased for two or three seats in the same seat section would work, so she could sit sort of sideways? I really don't know... because even the emergency exit row (that she couldn't occupy) might not have the kind of leg room shed need. I would call customer service for whichever airline you like and see if they have options.

I haven't flown anywhere in the past 7yrs because I need access to a bathroom on a plane (paraplegic) . I was told, "you can only get to a bathroom if the flight attendants are willing to help you get it." So basically, I won't know until I'm ON THE PLANE. Yah.... no. Not going to work. ALL planes need to have wheelchair accessible bathrooms! It's not fair 😔 I want to travel. Para can go into autonomic dysreflexia & have a stroke all because they need to poop or pee Thankyou for this video ❤ 🫂
