You ran a poll in the last couple of days asking what type of offerings from your channel each of us preferred. THIS! This is what I prefer. Intelligent, informed discussion about the Bible. This is gold. That being said, I also like your teaching videos and your Bible reviews. 👍🏻😃🙌🏼

I love this type of video, too! Because of your channel, though, I buy more books. Thanks for introducing us to so many scholars and books that I would probably never hear about without your channel. I am almost done with Dr. Licona's "Paul Meets Muhammed" and enjoying it. His writing is very informative and creative. FYI, you are poking tiny holes in the Reformed bubble I have been living in. ;) Thanks, JM, for putting so much work into your channel!

I really want to buy this interpretation but why does it say "they appeared to many"? These words right here really throw a wrench into the portent and symbolic argument. Why would Matthew use words like this if it indeed did not happen? Did he make up "they appeared to many"?

Is it weird that I thought it may have been God releasing the ghosts of the saints for a short while? Yeah, I know Matthew says “bodies” but still . . . God can do anything.

There are NUMEROUS ways faithful Christians have interpreted this passage. So latching on to any one and disregarding or condemning all the others is unwarranted. Like Genesis 6, this is a passage that should be approached with exegetical humility and lack of dogmatism.

Thanks for another great video on a very interesting topic. I have a question for either of you. I'm a believer of many years who has been on a journey in my faith recently. I come from a conservative background, Southern Baptist, but I've gone to many denominations over the years. When you read a passage like Matthew 27, and consider the possibility that Matthew may have added portions of the story for literary effect, how do you reconcile that with a modern day Christianity that says they bible is 100% inspired by God? I do believe the bible is 100% infallible, but not 100% inerrant. It just seems that the more I study and actually listen to scholars like you two, the more I have to trust in almighty God and His work through the Holy Spirit (not that I'm very charismatic or looking for a new revelation), and the less I blindly follow what the bible says. It is a strange road to walk. I have peace, but I feel very alone in my conservative church. I hope you understand the question. Any thoughts on growing deeper in what the bible actually says would be greatly welcome.

I'd say put less stock in what various preachers claim about Inspiration and more stock in what Scripture itself consists of. When our view of Inspiration is built upon shaky foundations, it can crumble needlessly. For more, see our Bible for the Rest of Us course here on the channel--particularly the first 5 sessions.

@@DiscipleDojo I understand what you're saying, but don't you have a difficult time finding fellow believers who not only understand, but agree with your views on scripture? Since fellowship and community are built on our mutual beliefs in what scripture says, it is often hard if not impossible, to find a group of believers who don't think I'm a heretic. Maybe you have a wonderfully accepting church where everybody's a biblical scholar, but my reality for many years is that most people don't actually think about the bible, they just believe what their preacher or tradition says. Thanks for the feedback, I will check out course.

"What did they eat?" Mike can always be counted on to raise naturalistic objections to miraculous events. He really confuses me at times.

The Greek verb e·geiʹro, meaning “to raise up,” can refer to a resurrection, but it is often used in other contexts. For example, it can mean to “lift out” of a pit or to “get up” from the ground. (Mt 12:11; 17:7; Lu 1:69) Matthew does not say that “the holy ones” are “raised up.” He says that their “bodies” are. Evidently, the earthquake was so powerful that the tombs were broken open and corpses were thrown out of them. Just another perspective
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo 27 дней назад
But the text says they went into the holy city...so it's talking about more than bodies being exhumed, no matter how we interpret it.

@@DiscipleDojo thank you for replying. It’s very interesting.

V 53. Or “they who came out.” The Greek verb indicates a plural masculine subject referring to people, not to the bodies (neuter in Greek) mentioned in verse 52. This evidently refers to passersby, who saw the dead bodies exposed by the earthquake (vs. 51) and who entered the city and reported what they had seen. I’m only wondering aloud. I’m only have very little Biblical Greek but am studying hard.

Wow, just wow. How disappointing! So every single other verse in Matthew is true but this one verse is a lie, just because it includes miraculous events? Shocked that you are promoting this. Absolutely terrible exegesis, and it taints your whole channel.
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo 27 дней назад
Notice how you immediately jump to "is a lie"...COMPLETELY ignoring any actual discussion of the text, genre, or literary devices. If this "taints my whole channel", then you're exactly the type of Christian who needs to be here and have your views challenged.

@@DiscipleDojo no thanks, man. I don’t spend my time watching videos that trash the inerrancy and inspiration of God’s Word. As for the rest of your attack…I watched the entire video and heard the full context. Saying Matthew meant it like “it’s raining cats and dogs”…are you even serious right now?

@@dougrempel1035 If Matthew's "zombie" story is really a prophecy (and not a history) about what will happen in the future when the bodies of believers are raised incorruptible at the Second Coming, why would this interpretation "trash the inerrancy and inspiration of God's Word?" If Matthew treats the historical event of the Exodus (Matthew 2:14) as prophecy, when the quoted verse from Hosea 11:1 says it is not prophecy, then why would it be a problem for Matthew to do the reverse, take something that might look like history at first glance, and then use it as prophecy, particularly when it fits perfectly into the genre of Greco-Roman bios? The fact that Matthew does things that we would not do in our 21st century context, but that fits perfectly within a 1st century Greco-Roman literary context actually affirms the inerrancy and inspiration of God's Word, as opposed to "trashing" it. What am I missing here?

This is why the Bible says we need two to three witnesses to establish something. So when we get things like the thief on the cross we don’t make a mountain out of nothing, because it’s only in one of the gospels . Btw that thief never confessed, he never said sorry . And now people believe in death bed confessions 🥲. I wouldn’t trust a verse that stands by itself
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo 27 дней назад
His faith seemed good enough for Jesus...so it's good enough for me. Not everything needs to be retold in every Gospel to be true. Otherwise you'd have to throw out most of John and a lot of Matthew. I would respectfully encourage you to rethink your view on this.

@@DiscipleDojobut the Bible has translation errors, unless you want to think that Jesus the word made flesh didn’t know the word. however God gave us a way to decipher what’s true or not . Multiple witnesses . We also need to recognize the book has been messed with by man. So here’s an example. Are you gonna tell me Jesus and his deciples don’t know scripture? Cuz there doing Passover on the wrong day . Whoever translated their writings didn’t know Torah . Mathew 26:17 Mark 14:12 Luke 22:7 (The original instruction Leviticus 23:5-6 & numbers 29:16-25)
