Are these new Lutron switches worth the upgrade?

Lutron Caséta is the most reliable smart home tech system I've ever used, but do their new switches live up to their reputation, and do they improve enough in areas where the original switches were lacking?

I have many Lutron dimmer switches in my house, not the wireless type, but they are just well made and reliable. I spent a week back at Lutron HQ back in the early 2000’s in a training class in PA. It was extremely informative and my group had a nice time there, staying In Bethlehem PA while in training.

Great video. Touched on all the important points. My last home I had outfitted with the original Caseta system and loved it’s functionality. Just moved into a new house last last month and just got my last shipment of the new caseta switches to finish outfitting this whole house in the e new style. I gotta say I absolutely LOVE the new design on these switches. Much better looking with an almost undercover type look. Nobody would know they are smart switches if I didn’t tell them. A month in and so far I’m very pleased with both the dinners and standard switches.

Seconding this! I moved into my first home in August and had always planned to kit my house with Lutron when it came time. The timing worked out pretty well that these switches were available as soon as I was ready to start installing Lutron in my home. I love how unassuming they look and the dimmer switches are much more intuitive than the older style

6:33 I don’t understand this complaint. Did you not realize that you can move the scrubber while the light is off and then press the on button to turn the light on to the brightness level as indicated by the scrubber? You know, just like you would do with the dumb version of the Diva switch? If anything, if it worked the way you suggested, I would probably not buy it as I think the big upgrade with these switches is being able to adjust the brightness *before* turning on the light. Not something that can be done with the old model.

hi fellow Illinoisan! great review. hated the old lutron style but these traditional looking switches are much nicer imo. considering this or the innoveli switches for my place. i would prefer innoveli, but they're having stock issues so if i actually wanted to get a switch within the next few months it seems like these are a better bet.

Although I like the architecture and reliability, I avoided Lutron until recently. I didn't prefer the old button style, didn't like dimmers going to full bright with one click up (vs the now 2 clicks used in most good smart switches), and like the mech. dimmer bar provided that acts as preset level, yet can be overridden by smart commands if needed. I have most of the home's public switches on Zwave and Zigbee protocols, but I got a few of the new Diva dimmers which fixed the original issues I had with Caseta (outside of pricepoint). Also, an older house, it saved running power to those switch boxes for a neutral. While Eric mentioned that sliding the bar doesn't 'auto on' the light as well, this is equiv to traditional dumb dimmer functionality. The LED dimmer indicator could be a little longer since the manual slide partly obscures and obscures dimness level at quick glance; and maybe have more config options like other smart switches, but pleased with it, enjoy its speed of response, compatibility with my other hubs, and it works as intended. Cost to do a whole house would be my only deal-breaker against the new caseta models.

I upgraded a few of the original dimmers to the new Diva in places I don't care as much about 3-way dimming. Since there is a 75 device limit with the system, having picos in some location takes up space in the device count. Switching out a few devices and therefor removing the Pico has allowed me to add dimmers in other locations.

Can you mix one with normal (dumb) 3 or 4 way switches and control w software without swapping smart switches into all 3 or 4?
@jeffreymayes907
@jeffreymayes907 Год назад
@@griffindeluce Not exactly sure what you're asking, but let me give a better example... I have an upstairs hallway that has 3 switch locations. I originally swapped out the standard US toggle switches of a Caseta dimmer (original model) and two Pico remotes. Problem is a Pico remote counts towards the 75 devises limit in Lutron. Since we never dim the lights in that hallway, but I still want control, replacing the original Lutron dimmer with the new Diva dimmer and putting back the 3-way and 4-way switch's in the other two locations freed up two devices that I can now use somewhere else in the house. I would not do this in all locations as there are many places I do want to be able to dim lights from all the locations on that circuit (dimmer & Pico combination). If I get your question, no you can not use a standard switch on a circut with the original Caseta dimmer because if someone flips the switch in the other location it will kill the power to the dimmer. With the original dimmers you are basically not using the wires in the the walls and your are using the Pico in the remote location. With the New Diva Caseta dimmer you need to do a wiring modification in the remote location to loop power back around so the dimmer does not loose power when that remote switch is used.

I love my Lutron Caseta switches but I’m at the point where I’m giving up on pairing them with LED bulbs. I know all about the compatibility app. I’ve spent hours combing over the results. I’ve tried several brands that people have confirmed are the “best.” From my experience, none of them are perfect. Some bulbs work most of the time but flicker on occasion. It got to the point that I thought my newer home was incorrectly wired but it’s not. Pop in some incandescents, flawless victory. Shame really, I want to use the more responsible, longer lasting LEDs… but the performance is just meh.

The double-whammy on the size of the dimmer and fitting it in the box is that the wires are all built-in, so you end up with a ton more wire to stuff in the box. Rather than just attaching the existing wires to the side screws like on a normal switch, I now have the wire hanging off of the dimmer (including the traveler I may not need) plus likely a wire nut for each. I've never been unable to make it work, but it would be so much easier if they'd just give us normal screws to attach the wires to. Maybe there's some technical reason they have to do this, but it's pretty frustrating.

@Polkster13

@@EricWelander Well, I guess I could just use the new companion switch on my existing three-way switches that don't use a dimmer. I only have one 3-way switch that is on a dimmer and I used the Lutron Caseta PD-10NXD-WH dimmer switch with a Lutron Claro CA-3PS-WH for the other side (to just turn on and off the light, the dimmer controls the brightness). This is for a Ceiling Fan light. I am wondering if I can replace the Claro CA-3PS-WH with the new companion switch when it is eventually released. Do you think that will be possible? We replaced a few light switches for a remodel last year. The original caseta switches are really ugly and I hate the fade-in/out. At the time that's all that was available. I decided to go with Sunnata and RadioRA3 instead. With Divas available, I might have gone the Caseta route
@hmurchison8123
@hmurchison8123 Год назад
RadioRa 3 was a good choice. The one thing my wife really liked was how our Caseta Pico could have a preset on the middle button which we used to dim the main floor cans really low in the eventing. No, that's the benefit of the fader on the right. If you don't want to blind your partner at night, make sure the fader is low before switching it on.
