I believe it's because couples begin to adopt each other's habits and patterns, which results in both of them gaining similar features over time due to maturity and general aging. Though I'm pretty sure it takes longer than most people think for there to be a noticable difference, like at least a decade or something.

Thinking in terms of evolution, the genetic phenotypes (features) in a given lineage will also exist alongside the attraction towards those phenotypes found in others. Another way to put it is that we tend to be attracted to people that have the same features that we have. That's probably why a lot of these people who look alike are actually dating each other.
