13:42 "Is there a better end to the work day than a nice gravel ride into the sunset with your colleagues?" A nice gravel ride into the sunset *away* from your colleagues?
Dealt with a creaking for a customer on his brand new Madone (which are known for creaky seat posts). Trek had replaced the frame and cranks and BB and basically everything. Rode it one day and realised it was creaking from the spoke crossover points on the rear wheel!! Drop of chain oil at each cross point and it went away.....
Ironically, I believe you can order handcuffs from the Pain Warehouse. I also had a problem with a mysterious creak, I was worried it would be an expensive repair. It turned out to just be me. Panic over!
Mammon said it for me, getting you early going thru the ritual of getting ready and dressed. So I got a Old MTB that came thru the shop and has a good old cloud 9 saddle which I can ride with me regular clothes on. So during the week cause traffic is so dangerous I can ride this Old MTB on the sidewalk around me neighborhood with me regular clothes on and I absolutely love it. And of course when I’m riding me good bike only Rapha clothing will do and me Selle Anatomica saddle made in Wisconsin the best saddle your butt will ever have. Only problem you will want one on every bike and that’s what I have.
What is most annoying, is watching everyone cycling, as apparently it is Spring. In northern Ontario, where I live, it was -19C this morning on my way to work and there is still a metre of snow on the ground. I want to ride outside ... Please.
One of my cycling mates got disc brakes for the first time and thought they made too much noise while braking. His solution: chain lube. 🙈 I have been laughing since 🤣😂🤣
I, personally, would never own, nevermind ride such an expensive bike. Racing bikes, in my opinion, are not the best bike for commuting, and carrying groceries. Aside from that, they're far too expensive, and too tempting thief bait.
I have a heavy ”clonk” sound from my left pedal side when going max power, each revolution. Both on the trainer and the race bike. Cannot locate why, shoes are the same, not from ”myself”, can I have the same issue with the pedals on the two bikes? Shimano spd-sl. I tried new cleats, same thing. Shoes feel solid, cleats securely fastened.
Annoying... your non-cyclist friends whom mean well, trying to relate to you about cycling. It's awesome that they care that much for you, but when you try and explain things; you can see the hamster wheel circling, but no light bulb going on. God Bless them for caring enough to make the attempt. The love of sufferings, it is cognitive insanity.
I had a BAD creaking problem 😪 I would check my bike every day. Hours upon hours searching to no avail. 😮💨 Then one day I noticed the creaking as I bent down to tie my shoe. Got to love getting old!
Hundreds of places in supermarkets for cars but only a handful of places to lock up bikes and normally those few places are taken by the supermarket staff. We are decades behind places like Netherlands.
We dutchies don’t need places to lock our bikes. We ride old commuter bikes we call “barrels” and we just leave them outside against the wall with a small lock. Only at train stations and such you’ll see those big “fietsenrekken” where we park our bikes.
@@hansanders4983 even if that's the case, we have more bike thieves per number of bikes here than in Netherlands hence the need for secure bike stands.
I had a periodic creak once that I couldn't figure out what was rubbing for the longest time. Until I discovered by pure accident that my bottle cage had broken and was causing the noise. Probably the easiest/cheapest bike fix ever.
In my experience lorries and trucks pass me with a good amount of distance as they are professional drivers.. sadly this can’t be said for the common car driver
My experience too, not much space in Boston, but I feel professional trucks seem more likely to keep going straight and not drift off and crush me because they are texting, although I might be being a little generous here. And uber drivers, they are absolutely awful.
Hack or bodge? Using a phone image with the hack or bodge image on it? Bodge! I’m taking my new glasses back because I couldn’t see what they were on a TV screen!
I hat a cracking sound on my bike once. I spent day's trying to figure out where it came from but I couldn't replicate it. One day I was walking home from the supermarket and heard that sound. It was the multitool and another object in my jacket pocket hitting against each other.
Thought-provoking episode. Excellent team, Simon and Manon. Things I find annoying? Getting old. I'm 73 and nothing has really gotten easier, unless you count remembering to be careful ALL THE TIME. On the subject of the staggering complexity of bicycles today, and the proliferation of 'standards' (how many standards do there need to be before the term loses meaning?) one of my five bicycles is a rebuild of my 1974 racing bicycle using many original parts and this is my favorite ride, along with my two Raleigh Sports, reserved for wet weather (fenders). My first edition of Sutherlands Handbook is half an inch thick.
The Allez Aluminum at $3k for 105. I bought a carbon trek emonda with 105 for $1400 5 years ago. So double the price in 5 years for a cheaper material? How will anyone get into cycling at this point?
I do despise the phrase ‘people of colour’ as we are ALL people of colour, we’re just different colours. It’s ok to say black/dark skinned or ethnic groups as that’s what some of us are 🤷🏾♂️
My Hack for Deep Weels and too short Valve stems: i have a Valve-extention on my Tubeless Valve on my Deep weels. So i can use every other tube, just srew the extention of the Tubless Valve and on the Valve of the spare Tube. Simple Life! And yes, it worked already more then ones.
Hack / Bodge: Hi Si and Manon, thanks for featuring my turbo fork support on hack/bodge. Firstly I’d like to confirm that I am for Clare (who wouldn’t be?…). I’d like to appeal Manon’s “BODGE!” - the support is bolted to a piece of thick flexible playground impact mat so it flexes with the rocker plate, in fact it feels better than a wheel, come on Manon attention to detail! Keep the great shows coming, Don.
Have you got a new camera to record the GCN Show? The back of the studio is a little blurred, and Si and Manon looked ‘crisper’ in fact so much so I could see Si’s wrinkles.
Manon hit the iceberg full on with the faff. Last week, I couldn‘t find my Garmin so I had to do my ride indoor watching the nice weather outside. On the other hand, I met Magnus Cort on Zwift, how cool is that? (ok he flew past me but for an excuse, I was on Zone 2).
just go on an adventure man. i don’t wanna sound like a hippie but cycling shouldn’t be all about computers and whatnot. don’t be afraid to go for a ride, get lost and fall in love with what was so fun about cycling in the first place.
This talk about how expensive, in today's money, bikes are compared to the '70s gets me thinking: Would a modern bike with 70s equivalent weight/functionality/aero characteristics actually cost more than it did back then? I suspect probably not. Without any evidence,(!) I suspect our modern bargain-basement bike would function AND handle better AND weigh less than the best 70s vintage production models available and still cost a lot less in equivalent money. I think we have very expensive bike because as Simon mentioned - we get a lot more engineering for our extra outlay and while everyone has the choice to go cheap and functional the market as a whole won't and don't because... FAST BIKES ARE TOTALLY WORTH IT and YOLO!
I believe most annoying thing is that I permanently feel unfit. There's always billions of faster guys on the road, zwift, Strava and especially RU-vid... Hell, I was 20% stronger a year ago and after struggling with Covid even Ollie suddenly would outsprint me. Only fix: just focus on Dan and get ready that he'll win everything but the sheer wattage numbers, since he weighs probably only half as much as I do. (Love you, Dan. Thanks for having a shared FTP with me... On a tandem we might get Ollie)
Had to laugh when Simon drove 5h and only had 1 arm warmer. I recently went for a winter swim at Portobello (water and air temp 5c), drove 45 min, got my wetsuit, neoprene gloves, shoes and skull cap on, only to find I had left my goggles at home. Turns out freezing cold water directly against your eyes makes your eye sockets and eyeballs ache after 10 strokes!
I had ridden a few 24 hour rides when I was introduced to the Stump Jumper by Dick Landis of Landis Bikes (Schwinn in the 1800's), back in the mid 1980's. I moved off road because of bad drivers in traffic. I loved most all bikes and tried doing without a car for a year. A challenge for Wife and 4 children.
Two comments . . First, if you think things "creak" now, wait until you are north of 50 years old. You ain't heard nothin' yet. 😀🤨😕 Second, for Manon, did the person that sold you your cheap bike happen to have a back garden full of them? 😀
For the average rider, bikes are NOT a lot better than they were in the 90s or early 2000s. They're better, to be sure, but only the high-end rider can benefit from some of the more price-driving improvements. In value terms, the average rider is being shafted in 2022. Just two improvements are worth what they cost: disc brakes and articulating seat posts. That's why I have not replaced my 2000 and 2004 model Specialized road bikes, and I don't plan to. I did just order an e-bike to assist me in training and to run errands, but my conventional road bikes aren't leaving.
Hey Si, I'm keen on your manual challenge. I'll race you, I'll see if I can learn by the time I turn 60 (September 2022) and challenge you to learn before you are 40 (whenever that is). Best of luck, cheers.
Most annoying things; just had it confirmed by GCN that GCN+ is not available in Andorra! With over 100 of the top pros living here, sort of seems a bit contradictory... just an observation
Squeeling disk brakes. I've changed pads, rotas, both at the same time, and they still won't shut up. Rota cleaner only helps for a short time. Bring back rim brakes.
There are loads of cheap (i.e. 40-60% off new 2-3 year old barely used bikes out there. We have refreshed our family fleet recently with bikes others bought early in lockdown and now want money for instead after they realise cycling isn't for them. Typically little used, sometimes on a turbo. Tip to be prepared to travel a bit for the right bike. Bargains are there - you just have to look at the second hand market and do the work.
6:40 traffic is inevitable, but can however , be mitigated by other road users NOT blocking the gaps / lanes between other vehicles; experienced motorcyclists never or hardly ever seem to do this, but food delivery muppets seem blissfully unaware and willing to annoy the hell out of one on the homeward journey (especially).
@OllieBridgewood isn’t that on 33:30 the least aero position and therefore the slowest? I’ve only seen (amateur) road bikers on MTBs with that awful position.
Caption competition: Daniel Oss shows everyone his resting ditch face.. Annoying things: GPS not uploading after ride. Riding with others who are not taking it as seriously as you are/riding with others who are taking it more seriously than you are. Bad weather on the day you have planned a big ride. Headwind on the way out not being a tailwind on the way back. Someone else moving your bike/leaning their bike against yours without asking. Bike spaces already taken up on the train. Cramp.
Most annoying thing about biking. This ties in with your later talking point in the exciting journal! People willing to risk cyclists safety to gain very small time gains whilst driving… lots of people dart around cyclists only to slam on brakes and turn left in front of you.. so annoying! Also, British weather. That’s annoying
In answer to your bike storage request, I can't send a picture. But, my double garage is dedicated to bikes only, and my friend keeps asking me if he can rent one side to store his project vintage VW beetle. The answer will always be no. Cars are waterproof, they should be outside.
As much as I enjoy the presenter duo of Dan and Si, I'm okay with Manon. And I grin but hey it's been awhile since I joined the chorus of cheers for Manon. And any more praise of Ollie and I'll look like a kook.
