Regarding the flugelhorn in the Jerry Hey chart; I read somewhere (may have been an interview with Jerry Hey, or perhaps Chuck Findley) that on these high, funky, trumpet-heavy tracks they used to set the tape to half speed (after tracking the main parts), and double the trumpet parts with flugelhorns (at half the tempo and one octave down, obviously). Then, when setting the tape back to normal speed, the result was these amazingly FAT sounding, yet super high pitched, trumpets. I really wanna try that some time... Great episode, guys! Keep it up!

Manu’s most viewed live version of Soul Makossa was filmed in Puerto Rico, just about 3-4 miles from where I’m writing this… with the Fania All Stars as a backing band…. and the FAS was one monster of a lineup. I suspect that Barry Rogers and Jose Rodrigues (sic) were there, Victor Paz, Lawrence Khan, Reinaldo Jorge… maybe Willie Colón… plus Manu himself, of course.

I submit to you that Michael Jackson’s “Burn This Disco Out” is the best representation of a horn section on an R and B song! That horn section on their own planet! I literally visualize them having a boss attitude while they were recording this, like they just sit down and chill out after that smacking horn intro, they they get up and let us have it around the bridge and song ending sections. And they just KNOW they’re killing it! *and they are*

The thing that struck me when focusing on the horn lines was how horn-like Michael's vocal phrasing is throughout the song. His use of sax phrasing is perhaps why he's not getting overpowered by the horns - because he's part of them. Anyone else feel that?

Horn arrangements written by a singer just scatting the rhythm to give their idea of what they want is not uncommon, MJ would do this as would James Brown etc. Its usually the really clipped stuff as that's what singers think horns do :-)

My favorite horn lines are on Al Jarreau´s self titled record, particularly "Black and blues", "Step by step" and "love is waiting" all arranged by Jerry Hey and played by him and his horn section (Seawind Horns, same personel as on "wanna be starting something"). I read in an interview that his approach on arranging for Al Jarreau and Michael Jackson was completely different, mainly because Michael´s voice is much softer and higher than Al´s. On the Al Jarreau record the horns have such a prominent role and completely take over in the outros of the up tempo songs, while on "Off the wall" and "Thriller" the horns are way more sparse and simpler (maybe except for "Burn this disco out" and the title song of "Thriller"). (Oh, how could I forget "Boogie down"???)

"Magic Mind" by Earth, Wind & Fire. If you listen to nothing else in that song, at least listen to the breakdown at 2:57, and marvel at EW&F's mastery. Then there's "Getaway". Less flashy but still very cool is "Jupiter". You could easily do a video just on EW&F's horns which set a new standard in the '70s. As for Michael, "Working Day and Night" is amongst his (well, Quincy's) best horns. The saddest thing about the '80s was the fact that synths basically killed the horn section.

I was transcribing the horn parts to 25/6 to 4 once, without any horn experience to speak of. I was convinced there were more than three instruments, but I turned out to be wrong! When I handed the score to some friends to play it, they were like "Wait, this is it?", surprised at unexpected sparseness of the arrangement. The individual lines and the way they interact make them sound so huge and exciting!

You guys make some very good points about "Wanna Be Startin'" horns. And thanks for crediting us which doesn't always happen lol. Jerry told me he and Michael each contribute about 50% of the writing, which was not normally the case- Jerry did the bulk of it on most of the MJ tracks. One minor quibble- yes Bruce (Swedien, greatest horn engineer or just pop engineer ever) got the best sound out of our section- a unique combination of perfect balance, incredible mics that only he touched and great rooms and studio gear. The horn level in this track is hotter than many as it's such an integral part of the tune as you said, That one vocal line that you were discussing as ducking Michael's lead- I think it's more of a function of Michael's vocal tailing off and Jerry dovetailed the horn line right out of it. Not actually any ducking IMHO. Also, remember this all these and other MJ parts were done with no Pro Tools and often 3-5 minute vamps we played all the way out. That'll keep you on your toes. And one last thing- Jerry is alive and well, still arranging but not playing trumpet, Kim, Bill and myself (I was featured tenor sax soloist at the Hollywood Bowl last summer for Quincy's 90th Birthday Celebration) are still playing and recording. Gary Grant left us last month after a battle with cancer. Thanks again for the thoughtful discussion. Larry Williams

Just happened across this and really enjoyed the discussion. The comment on Pankow's influence on Chicago's distinctive horn sound is really astute and something that has never occurred to me. As for Terry and the horn section stepping on each other, I think to some degree his guitar sound doesn't have a ton of high mid content which would allow the brightness of the horns to really come through and kind of share space that way, though it sure is pretty dense at times.

At last, I’ve found someone on my level : ) Magic Mind and the horn break just blows my mind ever since hearing it and buying the single and All n All as a young teenager. Yep the best ever, the little gap of silence after the horns and the beat comes back. EW&F and Phenix Horns showing how it’s done. P E A C E : )

the only other time I noticed the word "vegetable" in a song is in the song called The Logical Song by Supertramp. It´s a big hit from their Breakfast In America album from 1979. It´s also another band that gives you a lot of great songs to analyze.

PLEEEASE do the Evolution of Chicago!! Amazing Idea! This episode was so enjoyable. I especially loved the incorporation of takes by your guests, such talented and accomplished brass/woodwind musicians. Horn sections elevate songs to the next level and I'm here for it!!

Suggestions for a future show: Bluegrass to Newgrass. So many outstanding musicians and personalities to choose from, but any of the Punch Brothers / I'm with Her / Nickle Creak family would be amazing.

Great reactions. Part II, Tower Of Power and ask Jerry Hey to come in. Also listen to Jerry’s horn stuff with the group he was in that started it all, “Seawind”

Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin Something is his ode to Africa and the meditation of percussions that permeated the earth. That's what I felt when I heard that song the first time. Incredible for the technology they had to work with at the time.

Cetera's Jaw was broken in late May of 1969. Chicago II was recorded in August of 1969. His jaw wasn't wired at the time, but over the summer they toured while it was and he learned to sing with his jaw shut, which is something he continued to do throughout his days with Chicago.

Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” concert (September 24, 1977) at Soldiers Field found my friends & I (band geeks all) on the 50yd line. An A-MA-ZING concert! Would turn out to be Kath’a final performance in the city of Chicago. (While Kath’s death was unintentional, it was self-inflicted and had nothing to do with cleaning.)
