If you are thinking of buying a hub, here are two that I recommend and have tested myself: Anker USB-C Hub: geni.us/machub Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 Dock: geni.us/thunderboltdock
Apple doesn't have USB-C ports, they have USB-4/Thunderbolt (note, there is no number assigned to Thunderbolt any more). Yes, it's a standards mess where some functions don't even have to work. Thanks Intel!
@@tonyburzio4107 old macbook and imac got thunderbolt 3 using usb c port interface, the m1 using thunderbolt 4 using usb - c interface. Normal laptop some using usb -c charging only and have 2.0 usb some using 3.2 .. it totally depend on icon at the right or top usb c
I have been using M1 pro for two months and I never charge mine via hub(apple USB hub). I always use them separately. Just by my instinct. Glad they addressed the issue on time.
@@hawkeyeaerialphotography6652 me too, I never charge my m1 on the hub, I always charge on the laptop itself. idk why people just don't do that anyways.
@@addykantoor6327 some hubs use up both ports of the MacBook Pro/Air. And who would’ve known about this issue? Lol. Idk why you act like people can read into the future and know this would be a problem.
Since Macbooks have two thunderbolt type c port, I use one exclusively for charging the other exclusively for type c adapters. I think this is the best approach
I don't know about the M1 architecture, but on the 2016-2020 MBPs the circuits are designed in a way that if one fails, the other stops working too in most cases. I've never really seen a dead port by itself, it usually is the controller (like the CD3215) that fails and if it does, all the ports stop working. I might be wrong, but I think Apple implemented a similar design on the M1 Macs. At least the ones with 2 USB-C ports only.
This happened to me on a 2015 MacBook with USB C Dock several years ago. I was using it with a USB Storage drive attached, wasn't charging through the dock, and heard a click and the laptop screen went blank. Took it to an independent Mac repair shop and they confirmed the logic board was dead.
late answer, but this is probably a dead U4700. It still is (one of) the signature failures of the 12" from 2015 and is not caused by anything but Apple's shit engineering. It's the sad truth. It's a 5$ component and a 20 minute solder job to fix it, but barely anyone is gonna tell you that...
I'm happy with my M1 MBPro and Anker hub... That said, this is what bothers me of Apple, they always spin/shift the blame unto others. Bad USB Hubs, but curiously it only affects them, not Win10 PC's.
@@rabidbou4336 I'm not gonna dispute any claim whatsoever of whoever made them. Every computer and/or accessory has their defective units. Even cpus have have cores that are defective and the list goes on. I'm just pointing that Apple always shift the blame, like "We're not holding out iPhones correctly" "Flash is Wrong for the User as it drains the battery"...
I totally feel you, except this time Apple has not blamed anyone, neither done an official statement -except from the software update which is a confession. But anyway I’ve pointed out that USB-C PD standard has been frying a lot of mobile phone few years back, and I would not be surprised it’s the same issue here. PD can provide up to 100W...
Why windows machines does not break with these usb hubs... -you holding it wrong, yeas apple dont take responsibility... Anyway how about warranty, did you got a replacement mac?
I used a Anker Hub with my Intel MBP needless to say got these exact symptoms so went back to Apple on warranty where the main logic board was changed, the power button and even the screen! Very strange.
My M1 macbook air died in january because of an USB-C hub with power delivery (Aukey). The motherboard and touchID have been replaced... So, I bought the official apple USB-C hub, and no problem with it. Recently I updated to 11.2.2, but I did not retry my aukey usb-c hub because I'm scared to send my macbook again to the apple store x)
Frightening what can happen! Chance your device was still under warranty. Do you think such disaster could also happen from a simple USB 3 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (that also has 3 USB ports) which I use for cable connection and a LAN?
@@AlbanianGladiator I fix macs for a living and I can argue against that..... i.e google staingate, flexgate, GPU failure.... slowing down iphone and I can go on and on :P
I have had my hub since April of last year, and I used it on my 2018 iPad Pro all the time, and ive been using for the past few days and its still fine. I don't use it for charging, I use the hub for the usb A ports for my keyboard and mouse, and I use the HDMI ports and ethernet port. I use the second USB-C port to charge my MacBook Air M1
I have been using the Otolla 10port hub. It uses both usb c ports. I also use a charge through that plugs into the hub. I have not had any issues with either except occasionally a peripheral will turn off unexpectedly. That, I think, happens if the power draw exceeds the power available. I find the need for external hubs very important with the new M1 MacBook Pro, since it only has two usb c ports.
I am convinced it killed my first 2021 M1 13” MacBook Pro. I believe it is what killed the monitor, which went completely black and unusable. It was an (AUKEY USB C Hub 10-in-1 Type C Adapter) from Amazon. Apple replaced my M1 and I got a new one now that I have not used a hub with yet, as I am honestly terrified to, so I’m stuck with 2 USBC ports, with sometimes only 1 as power is using the other. There is also currently another issue where the battery is showing needing support, even with it being 100% functioning, that is caused according to Apple support by a recent Big Sur update bug. So the M1 is full of weird problems currently.
Been using a Belkin USBC hub for the last couple of months with no issues at all on my M1 MacBook Pro. Have a 1440p monitor, webcam, external HDD and power plugged in and all work fine. Have now disconnected the power from the hub and plugged it into the other USBC port, still all working fine.
I had the hub (from AppleStore) going very hot in the 2018 Intel MacbookAir. I had a funny feeling about it and never used it with my M1 MacbookAir. I reasoned that if it burns my fingers with just a hard disk, the charging load will fry it completely. It does not feel right.
i stopped using usb hubs with macbooks since 2018 when i found that simply plugging in the hub would cut off the wifi- strangely putting the hub under the desk would not cause this problem- and this only occured with the macbook not the other pc laptops using the same hub!
Confirming this, my 1 week old mbpro m1 literally just got black screen one time i used hub's usb c charging. Apple had to replace logic board and touchbar. Never tried it again ever since.
I'm guessing Apple didn't land their implementation of USB4. Simultaneous Data and Charging through the same port is a feature of the USB4 standard, in theory its not that different from thunderbolt3 but Apple went with their own engineering on the controller. I just hope the 14" has it all sorted, I need 3 external display support and am willing to spend good money for a portable workstation that can handle almost anything.
I just feel it crazy that many people view this hub or dongle thing as normal for a tool meant to just get things done. The dock station for the thinkpad seems legit but this small hub you have to carry around with you all the time ....
Thank you for this video. I am definitely battling with the confirmation bias because I am focusing too much on the negative comments. I really want to get the satechi slim usb-c multi port hub but still not sure about that brand.
Not just devices with M1 chip, even 2019 version happened as well. In almost of the cases I found, it seems to happen whenever you're trying to use PD port on the hub. My last MBP M1 got bricked because of that. Btw, my hub is Hyperdrive 8-in-1
I had 4 external disks that won't start with 2 different Macbooks. I thought I was just unlucky with these disks, but now I can see that the only constant I had when working with both those Macs was the dongle. I have bought a different one and now everything is working great. So yes, I agree that some of these USB-C Hubs are not "Mac compatible".
I owned an M1 MBA for one week and Apple already had to replace the USB-C ports in the laptop. For the record, i had never even used a USB-C hub on it at that point. Super duper.
I just got the macbook pro 13 m1 2020, my first apple product ever. Watching videos like this makes me wonder what people mean when they say "it just works". Some say let the laptop sleep everyday, others say shut it down every week or so, and some also say you should shut it down everyday. Some say dont keep it plugged in, others swear that if you keep it plugged in it will ruin the battery. Some say charge in burst others say charge only from 20% to 80%. Some say don't use a keyboard and camera cover cause it could ruin the screen, others say that their kids have stood on top of their macbook and it's still fine. Some say that apple products are virus free, others say don't download third party apps. I'm confused and scared.
@@bcspreliminary5350 after being overwhelmed by the many many MANY "advices" on how to use the macbook. I decided to just go about my day without thinking it too much. I rarely let my macbook's battery lower than 20%. I often charge it in burst from 20-100. But sometmes i also charge it from around 60-100. I let it sleep from one day to the next and usually i just shut it down once a week. I think the battery is still fine, but i can't get the expected 20 hours of battery life though with my use case. I only get around 8 maybe? Maybe it's because i always plug it to an external display tho
Just enjoy your device man. Its like googling diseases. Ive used my macbooks the way i wanted for years, my oldest one is 11y old and still works (although battery is weak now). I mean all the millions of people who bought a macbook and who are NOT here says it all right.
I've experienced a similar issue. I have a 2019 13" Macbook Pro (not M1), and purchased a CalDigit TS3 to go along with my two Dell monitors. Everything works fine until I shut down my Macbook. It wouldn't turn back on. Needless to say I was scared shitless. I was able to turn it on a bit later (after 10 mins?). The same problem would occur later: not being able to turn on after I shut down my Macbook, though it always turn back on after a short wait.
Fixed? Kinda. Apple probably turned something off that made USB-4 fast, but isn't really needed with USB-C. Of course, now the port isn't fast so it depends on what you mean by fixed.
Strange that you directly say that it are bad hubs. Maybe bad macs? Those hubs work fine on other devices. And even if hub, the usb c port should be protected. And it is the device not hub that request pd power voltage/amp not the other way
Apple has passed not only the hardware on to the consumer but now also the liability. I did not even get a USB-C to HDMI adapter with my new MacBook Pro. wtf? My fault? I've carried a Apple/Mac laptop since 1991. 30 years and I haven't seen Apple so poorly as these days. Very disappointing.
To be fair….Mac can finish the job (for the low, low price of $200…after purchasing an already $2,300 MBP). Not that I’m not holding a grudge or anything.😶
Great insight, thanks. I've always believed in the maxim, "You get what you pay for" and quality in computer parts is no exception. Will be chasing an Anker or Belkin when I get my Macbook Pro pretty sharpish.
Macbook M1 cannot protect itself despite the price. It should smart enough for usb C, but unfortunately not. If other device just have no problem, then why.
@@Julian-sj5tr exactly many comments here keep talking about you buy the cheap and wrong hub but the fact that Windows PCs are fine well…. they’re all apple fanboy i guess? and No, I’m not even a PC user. I have an iPhone and a Mac M1 but I really want to use a cheap usb hub without all this silliness
@@Julian-sj5tr no, the problem is that Apple blocks 3rd party repair shops from obtaining parts to repair these broken Macs. What usually fails is the USB C controller, unfortunately Apple has now made exclusive contracts with Texas Instruments and such to not sell these chips to anyone. It's a disgusting practice, especially since they always brag about how green they are. I guess "green" is a symbol of cashing out.
I plugged my charger directly into my type C hub that is connected to my macbook pro m1 for almost 7 months now and still works fine. Btw I bought it for almost $38.
my ANKER USB c hub, without my MacBook M1 being connected to the charger, shocked me. as in, very static shocks throughout the hub and the laptop. shocks you feel shooting up your entire arm
Thanks for highlighting the issue. A question for you regarding the Anker hub you feature in the video. I have the hub but I hate that it does not enable the USB-A type of ports powered once the computer disconnects. Do you know of good hubs that keep the ports powered when the PD power is plugged in but the computer is not? Thanks.
My first M1 MacBook Pro logic died just 3 weeks after use, then the replacement machine, the camera died and I actually asked for a refund, first time in my life I’ve asked for a refund from apple ever. So 2 M1 MacBook Pro’s down, I have desperately been looking for a replacement, but the recent iMac launch was underwhelming and I suspect I’ll be headed back for my 3rd Mi MacBook Pro, fingers crossed, three times is a charm.
*I’m 60 years old with an M1* (not that age matters but say that in case someone wants to comment something snarly because I’m not tech savvy). Any-who, I’m scare shit to use a hub on a recently purchased M1A. (I bought one thanks to the great info on this channel). However, I’ve been learning about this hub issues and watched many videos on it. I’m just overwhelmed. There’s so many options to buy too. Hope this nice community can assist me. You pro editors and computer/tech savvy folks out there *PLEASE HELP* *Here’s what I want to do* First of all, I got the M1A Mac this week but thinking about exchanging it to the pro because I literally watched a few videos on this channel and other good ones and realize the pro out beats the Air in some areas like editing, is that true? Aside from that dilemma, I need my Mac primarily for running 2-3 businesses so having multiple screen open is essential; RealEstateSoftware, Accounting Software, Editing Software, School Work. I will be Podcasting too. Additionally, I want to add parallels (to use it as Windows for school stuff or should I just buy Windows Office?) Now that you know my usage requirements-needs I’d like to know *what hub to buy* so I won’t experience any issues like many have had from reading the comments here. It is imperative that I do not go without my laptop for weeks so trying to prevent any issues to not have to deal with sending it to Apple for repair. I want to be very careful. What Hub are best, anyone? Side note: I notice in comments many are saying NOT to connect the laptop power cord to the hub to charge the laptop while also having other devices (mic, screens, etc) to the hub as well, is that right ? I’m not sure if I’m understanding this correctly. My apologies for lengthy comment and my several questions. For whoever read this far and can give me some honest guidance, *THANK YOU* !!!!!
"pro out beats the Air in some areas like editing, is that true?" Yes, the fan does a good job especially when editing and rendering. If your budget allows, a M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD would be my recommendation if you will be doing a lot of editing. "I need my Mac primarily for running 2-3 businesses so having multiple screen open is essential" M1 MacBooks can only output to a single external display. You can still have two screens in use (the laptop screen and an external monitor) but no more. The M1 Mac Mini however can have more external displays. "Additionally, I want to add parallels (to use it as Windows for school stuff or should I just buy Windows Office?)" If you only need Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Word), no need for Parallels, just buy a Microsoft office subscription. "What Hub are best, anyone?" The two hubs I linked in the pinned comment on this video are my recommendation. I personally don't think you will have any issues, just make sure the software on your Mac is updated.
The point of this is odd. Yes its a small percentage but theres been a far larger group of people effected than with Intel macs. Anyone who is watching this need to understand that it does seem like mac os 11.2.2 did fix this issue.
@@blob4345 wouldn’t say any per say, but you wouldn’t have to get Apple specific, I believe something like anker/ugreen and similar good rep brands should be good
I had my M1 MBP clam shelled and docked to an Anker USB-C hub thru PD for 9 weeks without issues. Not sure if my 100w usb-c power cable with the E-marker has anything to do with it, which is then powered by a hypper 100w usb-c charger. But I read somewhere, that constant plugging & unplugging of the hub PD from the laptops may also have contributed to the issues.
Thanks for the video. This has been a source of anxiety for me for the last weeks. Have had M1 MacBook Pro since end of January. While it works, I can actually replicated a spontaneous reboot by plugging both Anker 7 in 1 hub and the Apple VGA/USB-C adapter, connecting it to external drive. All of this on battery. When I eject the disk, unplug the hub and plug the power cable into the port the MacBook reboots within minutes. Not ok for a +€2000 machine. Wondering if anyone else has this?
So can you elaborate on the "spontaneous reboot by plugging both..." part? You were on battery power, plugged in the Anker hub, and then a VGA/USB-C adaptor to use an external drive? And after that it forced a reboot? First off, why use that cable? Oh you mean the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter from Apple? Was it an off-brand?
There’s a software update for this. Big Sur 12.2 not sure tho but there’s articles popping around they got it fixed with the recent update. I think it was pcmag who posted it
I would NEVER charge any type of device thorugh a hub, that's just my thing. And never had a problem, and don't think i'll ever have. Just use the other port and don't buy that 2 port hubs.
I had a usb hub (not cheap) and I just got it a few hours ago and locked it when going to shower, then when I turned it on my Mac wouldn't turn on, you could hear the occasional boot sound though
Comments like this create more questions rather than clarifying the situation. Were you charging through the hub? How many devices were connect to the hub?
I used a dongle that is very similar to what you showed in the video, I connected an external camera, network cable and screen via HDMI and rarely my Mac (Macbook pro m1) crashed and restarted (I think it happened to me 2-3 times during a zoom call)
Just last week I had my M1 MBA reboot (more than once) with a USB C to 4 port USB A and 2 HDD's attached. I pulled out a more expensive hub and there was no issue. Retired the cheap hubs immediately (UGreen I believe) I heard about the power pass through issue, so I never use that feature.
Mine did, I think it was from Anker, but only when connecting the charger through the hub. I sent the MacBook back to Apple and had to wait 4 weeks for the new MacBook to come.
Yeah, I'm not sure that's the definition of confirmation bias. From my understanding it's an individual seeking out evidence for their pet theory or belief. If someone had this happen to their Mac, they would likely want to complain and warn other users as they are honest and caring individuals. I get your point, though. The issue seems over hyped. Maybe it's due click bait titles, negative news travels fast etc.
Is this problem effectively fixed by now? I'm a new owner of one of these macs and really need to use a hub due to the need of the extra ports. But I'm afraid I'll break it.
Wtf, I got an déjà vu at the moment you said ‘clicking noise. This was exactly what happens to my 13” 2017 MacBook Pro after using a Satechi USB hub. I heard * click click click * and everything went dark and never powered on again. Damage? 1.000 euro for a motherboard replacement. I’m still too scared to plug a usb hub into my m1 MacBook Pro....
Same thing happened to my 2020 MacBook Air after only owning it for a few months. Luckily - still had the one year manufacturer warranty. Now I’m paranoid when I connect it
hey nice information in the video i want to know that does the USB can still be used as magsafe i charge my M1 mostly with HP type C hub. So, I want to know does the magsafe still work perfectly through type C charging?

Mine had a problem with a powerbank , and it was not a cheap one , I was using it since 1 year with my old macbook pro . Simply shut off completly and when rebooted webcam was dead and touch-bar had issues . It was fortunately replaced
Good to know. I had a similar issue with two Topping external DACs dying when connected to my old macbook via USB. I figured out there was some voltage/static differential between them both, and from then, only used a toslik connector for electrical isolation. Thats something else to consider.
How come Apple never made a docking connector for their laptops? It would provide high current and data pass through. But it does kill the aesthetic...
I’m using a Belkin and it keeps overheating if I just plug in a regular usbA thumb drive. Even if the multi port adapter has the charging opening for the plug, I won’t risk it.
my M1 Air hangs for a while (I keep A LOT of windows open) like freezing when I plug in-out the macbook official charger. FOr 5-10 seconds mouse and keyboards are unrensposive. IMHO also the fact there are rumors they will return to the power plug instead of USB-C charging.
I was just using a Belkin 4 port hub with passthrough charging on my M1 air. I had a power adapter connected, an audio interface and a webcam. I had a monitor hooked up to the spare USBC port on the mac. Both ports died suddenly while using garage band with OBS and FB messenger.
which hubs do you recommend for macbook m1, with USB, HDMI and general ports. which port is the exclusive one? which one do you use to charge the laptop?
So, if I use a hub just for old USB ports for thumbdrives, and the like, and use the regular port from the macbook for charging I wouldn't face this problem?
@@SoDodgy dont mean to be late but i just got an m1 air and kinda scared so its fine if i just plug my midi keyboard and mouse etc. into a single usb c dock like the anker in the video.? will be charging with the other usb c on the air ?
