When America worships sports the christian in America must not even half heatedly participate

I received my copy of "Empires of Dirt," yesterday and I have started poring through it.

Lion, partially right but I disagree. We need to know Father by the spirit. The Bible only produces idolatry in the hearts of those who love it. The fleshy minds are eating from the wrong tree and forming a god of their own. Spirit of truth, rule our minds.

@Eyezayah I don't know . He just doesn't appear to be in great health, and I am praying for him. Many health issues are beyond our control, and many are well within our control. I pray for him in both cases. I am sure he is not offended in the least by my remarks.

I do not think we need to be that versed in Girard's theory. Reading Scripture, praying, and obeying the Word... May be sufficient.

Sports are better than tribal warfare insist as we're not pointlessly killing each other, but they also often fail to train young men to transition their sports experience to anything more or greater once the short-lived distraction of highschool/college sports is over. I think we'd be better off of our men spent less time passing balls around as part of some random sports team and instead played paintball or airsoft as part of a local militia group that also encourage ours members to be volunteer firefighters, search and rescue team members, disaster relief team members, etc. Train to defend, and train to serve, save, repair, and build, all together with all the other young men in your community.

@ArcherWarhound I don't think sports is wrong, but I really appreciate this suggestion. I think training boys at a young age about defense and skills would be good to make them aware of the world around them and how they can be productive parts of it. Boy Scouts before they went crazy used to provide a kind of teamwork/skills/values outlet. Ive heard of Trail Life USA and that might be a good alternative. And getting boys familiar with police and firefighters in the community is also a good idea and bringing them on regular visits to the firehouse or police station. And of course, hunting is a good outlet also.

Your last sentence is Calvinist schadenfreude. The father of the Prodigal Son didn't have that response.

@@tclearytcleary the story of the prodigal son has nothing to do with the gospel. False doctrine is often “proven” with parables and rejects the clear statements in the Bible. I’m not a Calvinist. I believe in humbly presenting the gospel to people and letting them freely choose to accept or reject it.

Well put. What would you say to the verse in Chapter 13 that references governments not bearing the sword in vain, but to carry out God’s wrath? Do you think that stands for capital punishment for severe crimes, or simply means justice?

@@adenjohnson5733 well, the verse doesn't explicitly preclude the death penalty in the text; and we know that God approved of the Mosaic law which ordered the death penalty in certain major offenses in Israel. All I know is if we fauthfully punished lawbreakers within the bounds of justice, then we as a society would have a lot fewer death penalty cases to argue over in the first place.

@@joeradler true! Personally I look to Numbers and Deuteronomy where God tells Israel that by not purging murderers from their society, the blood of the innocent is on the community. I’ll find the reference for you but regardless I agree with everything you said.
