A Chinese military jet intercepted a Canadian Armed Forces Aurora aircraft in an “aggressive manner” on Monday in international waters off the coast of China.
“They became very aggressive and to a degree we would deem it unsafe and unprofessional,” Maj.-Gen. Iain Huddleston told Global News.
In the exclusive footage, Global News' Neetu Garcha can be heard saying "are we okay?" while a man on board the aircraft later said, "This is an abnormal and unusual intercept."
Global News was on board the Canadian military aircraft reporting on the mission, which is part of Operation NEON, Canada’s contribution to helping enforce sanctions against North Korea, when the aggressive intercepts took place.

Soviet recon patrol planes would fly across international airspace over the North Sea during the Cold War. They were always intercepted by NATO fighter planes in a similar manner as shown in this video, the level of 'agressiveness' depending on the political situation at the moment. Normally, both planes' crews would wave to each other and take photos. In worst cases, they would give each other the finger. Whatever you may say about the former Soviet Union, in all those years they never complained about the agressive intercepts by NATO.

It is rather poor reporting that this video makes no mention of the location and the geopolitical context. This was in the South China Sea, which China largely claims as her own waters, overlapping with the claims of several nations like Vietnam and the Philippines, but to international law and to NATO are international waters. In light of China becoming aggressive in asserting their claims NATO has been conducting "Freedom of Navigation Exercises" to defend the status of the waters as international (though the United States does not support their claims it's worth noting that Vietnam and the Philippines have supported these operations). In recent years China has become very aggressive in defense of their claims and incidents like this are intended as a show of force. It's worth noting the underlying geopolitical situation isn't new, including Chinese aircraft being willing to engage in dangerous maneuvers like these. In fact there was even an incident in the early 2000s which resulted in a collision. However tensions in this part of the world have been climbing for awhile and many anxious eyes are observing with fears that this could brew into conflict. My two cents: Look at a map of "China's nine dash line" and it's obvious this behavior from China is overreaching and chauvinistic. However I think it's also abundantly clear that NATOs presence here is more than simply an innocent reinforcement of international law and meant to intimidate China. Neither side has shown any sides of backing down and it's definitely something to keep eyes on.

If anyone should be okay with other countries spying it should be the Chinese because that is China's M.O. ... spy, steal and pretend stuff they don't own is their's. A surveilance plane flying near Chinese territory and complaining of being intercepted... can anyone imagine the response had the situations been reversed? The hypocrisy is breathtaking... Also, their job is to "enforce sanctions" on North Korea. In other words, to spot for the US and Canadian Navy which would then stop any ship from any nation, be they allied to the US or not, from moving in international waters into North Korea. So much for "freedom of navigation".

For the procedure for that is to cut two engines you drop your flaps you lose altitude and you cruise at a very slow speed too slow for the jet to keep with you.
