Nobody of reasonable intelligence would sacrifice themselves for 5 people in that scenario. Human nature prioritises self preservation. If someone puts a gun to your head: you would do exactly what that person says, unless they're telling you to kill somebody much closer to you (family, child, close friend) in which case you may doubt it. There's no reason for you to act so selflessly, the average human fears death to a certain extent, even if they don't actively contemplate it.

@@nbassasin8092 its not personal belief system tho. Its people in all their comforts wanting to be the hero without actively contemplating the repercussions. Simon for example is saying he would sacrifice, but really? That is nonsense. Would he really give up every little thing hes done in his life for 5 random people? Im a million percent sure he wouldnt even do it for 5 of his friends, and that is completely normal. There are certain things such as love, attraction, self preservation that have been present in humans since the dawn of time. Those wont change just because you want it to.

Look at it this way, nearly anyone could die today and save 5 people... Just by being a organ donor... I don't see people doing that? Heck I'm not even seeing alot of people giving up their spare kidney's to save a strangers life. So anyone saying they would sacrifice themselves, I think is just BS everyone would save themselves.

I would, but not only to save 5 randoms as you said, but also because I would not be able to live with myself knowing that I could have saved 5 people but chose my own ass instead

also, this is only half of the pharsing of the problem. lets say a train is coming and you need to choose to either jump in front of it or push 5 people, and you have to chose one. what do you chose now?

Not concerning at all. It's the natural law of self-preservation. People would probably like to think they're selfless when asked in surveys, but in reality I'm betting 90%+ of people wouldn't give up their life savings or their lives to save 5 random people.

@@s94628 you didn't let 4 people die, you observed 4 people die. Switching the trolley could even lead to complications futher down the track you didnt know about. On the end, by not switching you also didn't save the one person, you let the train do its natural course Also switching could mean that you get charged for murder, accessory for murder or at best man slaughter

Being a wtiness and doing nothing still means you will be held accountable by yourself. You'd see yourself as a murderer and you would technically be one.

Whether or not you see yourself as a murderer is entirely up to you but you wouldn't be legally marked as one as you had no input in what was happening

If you had a situation where you clearly figure out that you can derail a trolley to NOT kill 5 people, surely the law can make you accountable for the deaths of those 5 even if they're on the preset path of the trolley. You not making a choice IS a choice in itself.

@@Karppaguy Choosing to derail the trolley would mean that you're deliberately killing that one person who would've otherwise been completely safe had you not done anything about it. You're literally participating in an action that involves putting someone's life in servere danger whereas choosing to remain as a bystander would mean that you aren't responsible for anything that occurred.

In real life, when you know you have the ability to save those 5 people and kill the 1 person for it, you kill the one person. Otherwise, you KNOW you "observed" 5 dying despite having the ability and complete control over the situation. There is no competition. I'd be glad to be ostracized as a murderer in that point (although I wouldn't be). The problem didn't occur because of me, I made the best case scenario CHOICE in the scenario I came up upon, in which I had all the info needed to save the most amount of people. Nevertheless, my original comment had NO ONE dying if you pull the lever. You'd still be "observing" 5 people dying if you did nothing. But the whole point is that you know that you have the choice to alter the situation. Hence you pull the lever.

I am so killing those people. Its my OWN LIFE why would I die for 5 strangers I dont even know.
