It all depends on which school you’re going to. Big city schools with lots of money and well-supported, enthusiastic teachers will probably teach their students a lot of stuff like this. Someone like me who went to school in a small town where all the money went to football and all of our teachers were burnt out and ready for retirement don’t know any of this. A lot of my teachers either felt the need to give us long-winded moral lessons that weren’t related to the material or would just make us copy stuff out of our text books and never challenged us. They trained us more on how to take standardized tests than actually teaching us stuff because higher scores on tests means more money. Hamilton the musical taught me more about American history than any of my American history classes did.

A long vowel sound isn't when the vowel takes longer to say. The word "will" uses the soft vowel form of "i", wheas "like" uses the long vowel form. It's just the sound a vowel makes when there is the presence of another vowel. It's also the form that is how we pronounce when saying just the vowel. You wouldn't pronounce the letter "i" by itself how you say it in the word "will".
@maybeimbiased
@maybeimbiased Год назад
Isn't the vowel in "like" a dipthong, /ai/, instead of a long vowel? A long vowel would be for example the difference between "ship" and "sheep".
@loganleroy8622
@loganleroy8622 Год назад
@@maybeimbiased The rule is if you pronounce the name of the letter when you saw the word, it is a long vowel. E.g. Baby, music, me, go, might.
@maybeimbiased
@maybeimbiased Год назад
@@loganleroy8622 Thanks! I did some research because I was taught in phonetics that long vowels were longer in duration of sound and thanks to your explanation, I googled it and I now know that the long vowels in phonetics are not the same as the ones used in teaching reading to kids whose mother tongue is English. So, the terms long vowels and short vowels mean different things and stand for different vowels depending if you're talking about phonemes or teaching natives how to read, which is confusing but well...
@carlchristopher7015

Who the fuck knows or cares what a long vowel is
@nategwright
@nategwright 5 месяцев назад
As far as I'm aware the "long vowels" concept is specific to English, and not a general phonetics rule. A "long vowel" sound is when a vowel "says its name" in its pronunciation, so: Long A is /ei/ Long E is /i/ Long I is /ai/ Long O is /oʊ/ Long U is /u/ Typically a vowel is a "long vowel" when supported by a silent E at the end of a word, such as "like," the E at the end makes the I the long vowel /ai/ instead of the short vowel /ɪ/. If that E isn't there (barring a number of exceptions because it's English), then the vowels make their default "short" sounds A: /æ/ E: /ε/ I: /ɪ/ O: /ɔ/ U: /ʌ/
@Senile_Yeti

I had to search up what it means, and I don’t think it was ever explained to them either. “Long” just sounds like it would be a vowel that’s… long, but google said it’s the ones that are pronounced like the name of the letter. Not something Felix would’ve ever learned in school (I’m almost 100% sure of that since I’m also Scandinavian) and even if Sean learned it it’s not a concept that’s remotely useful so no wonder he forgot it 🤣🤣

@@caffe1n8ed Well, I grew up in Faroe Islands, and I vaguely remember learning it in English, after it was revealed to be the i in like. It's so damn counterintuitive, and absolutely useless to know xD. English is mostly used by my own intuition today, because I've consumed so much english media. Even if you asked me to explain sentence structure or grammar rules, I can barely remember why, even though I know the correct use of it. But English is so peculiar, because with the amount of exceptions, it's almost necessary to know the language by heart, just to use it somewhat decently. I can explain faroese grammar rules a bit, but a lot of danish grammar rules have stuck with me (I still remember onomatopeia xD) so I could probably get by teaching that.
@NEBDmmnoob252
@NEBDmmnoob252 Год назад
Omg it's horrible. The question is asking about long vowels *specifically* in the weird English system, where long vowel means something completely different than what it means in linguistics. In the English system, "long vowel" means "this vowel was long in mediaeval English". They are right when they say that "balls" and "dog" have long vowels. They do in modern English.

I learned it pretty simply as if you can hear the sound of or the “name” of the vowels (A E I O or U) as how you would pronounce them in the saying the letter aloud by themselves in the word, then that vowel is long. But for example if you see a word that has an ‘A’ in it’s spelling, in the pronunciation of that word out loud, you don’t hear an ‘A’ like you normally would say it when saying the letter A just by itself, then it’s a short vowel. It would sound like “ahh” rather than a hard ‘A’

I’ve looked through a ton of comments and haven’t seen anybody explain this, but the question about the “long vowel sound” is actually a simple question for a 5th grader but I could understand why it may be confusing 😅 in elementary school they teach us about long and short vowel sounds. The reason “like” was correct is because the “i” vowel is pronounced (eye) instead of (“ih” like in the word “it”). Basically, if you pronounce the vowel like you are saying the letter, it’s a long vowel. Other examples of long vowels; Late, coat, meet. 😅💖
