Feeling overfaced by your horse is no fun. Many of us have been in situations at some point in our riding lives where we wondered if the horse we owned or were riding was really a good match. Especially for those just starting out in riding, having the right horse can be a critical part of making learning to ride both enjoyable and successful.
Wondering if it may be time to part ways with your horse is a tough decision to consider so today I share three questions to ask yourself to help make this important decision a bit easier.

Thank you for a sensible and well balanced view. I am working through some issues with my horse who started to get top side of me and my fear made things worse. I did consider parting company but have had a lot of help, tuition and extra work given to my horse from experienced riders. Gradually we are getting back to being a team. People like me need to take help and advice from people like you

Me and my share horse get on so well on the ground, but she is so powerful and strong and I feel like she does not respect me as a rider but on the ground is like a little puppy dog with me. It's so frustrating because I feel like I'm holding her back with her exercise etc but we have such a good bond

Very good video. I have one colt I started from the ground up as an untouched weanling and he was amazing and we had very few problems. I then acquired his brother, stupidly thinking they would be even remotely similar in personality. Our personalities definitely did not mesh, I wasn't enjoying the process, was throwing a lot of time and money into working with him, and my anxiety was through the roof. One brother became my heart horse after I retired my old gelding, and the other just wasn't the right fit for me.

CRKtraining Could you do a video on teaching a horse leg cues? My horse, he's doing better now though, thinks when I apply leg pressure with one leg, I want him to trot when I actually want him to turn. Or a video on restarting a horse?

I ride a pony every week and he's a lovely little man, he's called Frosty ;). I don't know if I'm just being too soft-hearted but I always feel really bad when I kick him or have to tap him with the whip (because he's a bit slow and never canters over jumps). The reason I feel this is because he's quite skinny (it is NOT an illness, he's a perfectly healthy pony). When others ride him (he's not mine but I ride him often at my riding school) they always do so well on him. Do you think I'm a good match or not?

Maddie McKeown Maybe you just need to become more confident in yourself and your ability to not hurt him. I regularly attempt to simulate my aids on myself to test my strength and to be able to put it into perspective when I get onto a horse, things like kicking my leg with the other ankle, tapping my leg with the whip, etc. That way I know when I get on a horse that I'm not hurting them, just giving them instructions. It's obviously not good to hurt the horse in order to get it to do what you want; that will just upset the animal, create resentment and dislike for you in them, etc. The purpose of aids is to instruct, not hurt. Learn where that line is and stay behind it and you really have no need to feel bad, get over that and I'm sure you'll be fine :) Also, Frosty is such a cute name ^.^

+Warmbloods Me to I test my crop on me so I know my strength on a horse and also my kicks.

I think you might be very soft hearted and more afraid of hurting a pony you obviously like than you need to be. The answers to your comment are good advice. If you test your aids on yourself you'll know. The pony might be being careful of you if you're inexperienced or might be just a little lazy if he knows he can get away with it.

I'm looking into leasing a horse. I have never leased or owned a horse before. I am a beginner rider (have been riding for 4 months) and I feel confident while riding but have only ridden 2 horses. I am just wondering 1) if you think it's a bad idea for me to lease a horse for any reason and 2) what things I should keep in mind when trying to decide if a horse is right for me. Thanks

+Brinda Anantha Keep riding, I wouldn't recommend leasing a horse just because of being a beginning rider. Maybe after 1-2 years, since you have progressed in riding, then you should look into leasing a horse. Its a lot of commitment and you need to have the $$ to keep up with your horse. Also, you'll have a horse that you can learn with and one that will meet your skills. Have a nice day!

Thanks for your input. I had since decided to hold off on leasing a horse because I have a bunch of other commitments and not positive I would be able to spare the time to ride on a regular basis.

+Brinda Anantha yes and also ask your riding coach because normally on your lease rides you ride by yourself ( at least for me) :) good luck!

Yeah I don't agree anyone can fit with any horse. For example. I'm 14 and have a 4 year old mustang I'm breaking on my own. Just got him last week. He is my first horse.

Hi Callie, I respect your opinion but I beg to differ, Horses are not cars, there is no safe horse, there is no bad horse, there is no special horse. There is no Mini-Van horse with all the safety bells and whistles. I own a small heard, all different, but all essentially the same. They can kill me at any time, and some even try, but the answer isn't in getting rid of them, the answer is working with them. To me people are the problem not the horses. For example, any horse, at any training level, or at any age is going to do something stupid at some point (Of course very natural to them) and it’s just a matter of time. Anyone who has a slightest anxiety about horses or getting bucked off or kicked,… shouldn't be allowed to own them. To me it’s very simple, If you can’t ride the horse and ride it well, feed it, groom it, give it shots, change the shoes, castrate it, and if necessary put it down,… you shouldn’t have the right to own it. The biggest problem is that in this day and age, horses are kept in stalls, in million dollar barns and are reduced to pets and are not subjected to their surrounding naturally. A horse that lives his whole life in a fenced off backyards is going to do a lot more stupid things than a horse that pulls a cart through the city all day long. Now these are both extremes, but you get the point. The very same people who buy German Sheppards to keep in a one bedroom apartment will buy horses to keep in 4x8 stalls 50 miles away from their home. That’s an abomination to me. The question isn’t that if the horse matches the person, the question is that if the person should even be allowed to own the horse.
