That's fascinating. I've never thought of the relationship between iron lean, and grip in that way (and no coach, in the 53 years that I've been playing, has corrected me on it!). That explains a lot as I'm not entirely sure that I do readjust my grip when I put my lean in!!! Thanks Mark.

Thinking the same thing. Something I need to check out for sure. I also like the idea of playing with the lie to produce certain shot shapes. I bit more of an advanced tip IMO.

I watched your video this morning as I was extremely frustrated with my iron play, I went out with a friend today and played, I shot 75 with ease and if not for a couple mistakes could have been better. My irons shots were very much better and I seemed to hit them a bit further as well, thank you for a great video, light bulb 💡

I think you need to change the title of the video to- "things you should know and do with your irons but probably don't". As with other comments below this is so logical and rings true with so many things that I do. But, if you have never been told or shown something, then you won't know it. Great video.

Ian Wooshnam was, is a great ballstriker. His long irons were quite a lot up at the toe end. All launch coditions are relative and high toe needs a touch open face to produce a straight shot. Nowadays it is far more easier to get fitted for clubs than back in the 80’s. If you’re short person or tall for that matter it is most recommendable to get fitted quite early in your golfing life.

Mark, excellent content. You're showing us something we probably don't think about and quite honestly I can't say I've seen other instructors talk about the setup, shaft lean, lie angle this much (except when discussing club fitting) etc.. I play in a seniors' league and I keep seeing guys overdoing the shaft lean thing to their detriment, as well as the always evil reverse pivot with guys hitting the ground behind the ball because they're falling backwards. I liked your comment about stance width as a fix for the balance issues.
@SolomonLi
@SolomonLi 2 года назад
Wow... this is a densely packed one when talking about that lie angle. Totally appreciate that content! It's easy to overthink on the course just as it is easy to be lazy with an iron setup. There's definitely a couple things in here I need to keep my eyes on. Thanks bruh!

Blooming fantastic this video is Mark. I never realised my set up was so wrong! I took your advice and shot a very steady 83 gross, not bad for a 17 handicap. Could easily have been 4 shots better as well. Hit the ball so straight and in balance. Thank you for posting the great content 👍

Tip 1 is GOLD! If you think about this and implement it for each shot it will improve ball striking and shot direction. Will save a bunch of strokes.

That shaft lean/grip advice is amazing and I can't believe I've never heard it before. I'd been struggling with maintaining shaft lead at impact. I'd previously done exactly as Mark showed. Set up, then leant my hands forward. Obviously from that in order to hit it straight I needed to correct by returning my hands to the initial position and the pre-shot lean became redundant. Just used this method and added a couple of degrees instantly.

@joebagadonitz

I have taken dozens of lessons over the years. I never been told of the concept of taking grip with lean forward towards lead leg to setup the club and grip. If anything I always have backwards shaft lean just after setup. I have always setup with club in middle of legs and square on the ground. after watching this videa, I feel that this is possibly what always has me with a closed face at impact and is giving me a snap hook more often than not. it also seems to explain to me why I have always preferred having the ball back in my stance. I can't wait to get back out and try this on the course.

For 3 years my shots as a lefty were hooking right. During my iron fitting in April, the fitter noticed the toe of my club was up off the mat and asked if my shots were hooking left. My new clubs are now 2* flat and I have a nice little fade.

Q-on your first error with shaft lean and face. When I turned the face to align then took a swing, when the face returned to strike it resulted with a hook. Is there any difference between 'turning' the face and 'closing' the face? ie if there is a difference, what is it?
@Carsonsimon
@Carsonsimon 2 года назад
I have a annoying habbit of just looking away when I take my shot...I think I start to look up way to soon, I know when I've done it because I have no "vision memory" of the shot between transition and the ball being in the air, normaly strike etc suffers because of it... Recently with irons looking at the ground right infront of the ball and ignoring the ball has moved my low point forward to that point instead of directly at the ball and made strike consistency much better. Also stopped my slight head sway away from target in the backswing because then I wouldn't be able to see that point. Visa versa with driver, looking at the back of the ball has kept me more back, I sometimes smother the ball and start getting a out to in negative attack angle and a high short spinny push cut...
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 2 года назад
As far as the club not sitting correctly to match your grip, after you have already taken your grip…. Since I’m rarely trying to play a dead straight shot anyways, I’ll take my grip, set up to the ball, then decide what shot I’m going to hit according to how the club is sitting. The only way I readjust my grip is if the shot shape truly matters on that specific shot. I probably need to change this bad habit. lol But, on the bright side…. It gives me plenty of practice hitting different type shots. Haha To be honest…. I think I play better by having a specific task at hand(shot type), instead of trying to “neutral” everything, every time.

Mark, this didn't work for me, it messed up my ball contact quite a bit. Fortunately, I'm working with a local golf instructor, and the reason this didn't work is because setting up with your hands holding the club forward changed the relationship between the club length and the ground, and setup is when we want to establish that distance correctly.
