We accidentally did the connection once in a game. Player was moving to a different state and so wanted his character to go out with a big flashy sort of thing. Go out with a bang, as it were. So in the weeks leading up, we focused on him realizing he'd come down with some terminal, uncurable disease. From then, it was all a journey for him to try and put right the wrongs he felt he did in his life. The party aided him in his final quests, all the while growing more and more attached to him, and to each other as we came to terms with doing the same ourselves. By the end, we actually cried, not just for our player's last session with us, but because the character died in game. Ironically, him dying peacefully in his bed had a much more huge impact at that point than it likely would have if we just stormed some castle and he blew himself up or something grandiose like that. The campaign from there shifted as we all focused on trying to become better people and support each other. Ended on us founding a new kingdom... quite by accident. We'd all ended up helping so many people that when the time came and the war we were fighting against happened and was over, the remnants united into a new kingdom and named us the regents of the land. Well, the two of us that didn't die in the final battle. lol

Good advice. One of the best moments in a game I ran the other week was when one player failed to unlock a door and set off the alarms. So one of the other players shoved him against the key pad and kissed. When the guards arrived they easily bluffed it away as an accident. When the guards left they both set about rinsing their mouths out and spitting a lot, because the characters behave as siblings as a rule. So a great moment where a bad dice role, turned into a memorable character interaction.

While it wasn't too deep of an event, there was a really cool moment in an adventure where we were helping a charity in the sewer tunnels that was being harassed by bandits. I looked around and realized we all had darkvision. My tiefling is a crafty bastard, always looking for the edge in a fight, so he grins to the preacher who runs the shelter: "Douse the torches." It was an absolute massacre, with us taunting the baddies every step of the way. Only one of them had darkvision and I targeted him immediately, taking him out with a well-placed crit.

The fourth dimensional character: A PC that starts off as "The Dwarf that wants a golden Ax" to "The Dwarf that sacrifices his Golden Ax for something they discover to be more important." The best PC's I've ever had in my campaigns are the ones that started off as a paragraph of backstory and then evolved into fully fledged, deep characters that you can really put yourselves in their mindset and know exactly how they would react to almost any given situation.

My favorite character started off very 1 dimensional, and grew a lot by the end. It was a half orc who's parents made a living and got rich by investing in farms, but in the world we were playing in crops failed everywhere, so his family lost their source of income and his dad left on a mercenary job for money. My characters entire character at the beginning was that he was a really stupid fighter looking for his dad after his orc mom gambed all his family money away but ended up developing a moral code around not fighting, and when he finally found his dad helping a foreign nation run a rebellion he convinced the party to leave and go after a diplomatic solution

I am the very definition of a one dimensional character. Always show up early, with character sheet and dice. Some times bring snacks for everyone. Mostly quiet unless a problem arrises or if someone/something addresses me directly. Otherwise roll to hit things really hard as a Fighter when talking fails. This video is a bit of an eye opener I must say. I never really thought about involving the rest of the group more often. We have a Pixie who dopes nothing but deal with the rest of the group, often ignoring objectives or simply being more interested in interacting with the group members or other NPCs. It's actually pretty fun to have someone who actually gives a damn about things other than the objective.

I play under 2 different DMs currently. The first DM had us create characters and then he gave them secret background personal missions to accomplish and encouraged us to make back stories. Since we mostly play modules and never play the between time, we never really get a chance to role play much. If we take too long to play a character situation, he gets impatient and the inevitable wandering encounter happens 'focus our attention back on matters at hand'. Maybe he feels left out? The second DM had us create characters, back stories and personal missions. Some of the best games we've had were all role play interactions with no combat and very few dice rolls. I've learned to be a one dimensional player with the first DM. He's good DM but doesn't seem to want too many dimensions. I'm as 3 dimensional as I can be with the second DM.
@TheOnlyToblin
@TheOnlyToblin 6 лет назад
This is somewhat tricky, because it requires your fellow players to actually give a damn about backgrounds and personality, which unfortunately not everyone do. Trying to interact with someone who is essentially a blank page is a rather stressful experience.

But we assume that they are good roll players, otherwise I see little reason of playing with them anyway.
@larsdahl5528
@larsdahl5528 6 лет назад
Yes, that is why I think this topic is worth to make a "How to be a better GM" at, as the GM is important in this. The "blank page" backgrounds is most often result of bad GMing. Either: The GM did start out with one or more incomplete characters (Characters without character!) in the group. Or: The GM is a background abuser. (Sometimes called DM instead - Disaster Master) Thus (the hard way) teach the players to make backgrounds without anything to be abused!

It's worth pointing out that these videos are made under the general assumption that we (audience) actively seek Guy's perspective (or anyone's for the matter) to make our own RPG-experiences richer, fuller, and more fun and interesting. Take a look at the number of views on Guy's average video... I can GUARANTEE there are a LOT more RPG related Players and GM's out there. SO it's reckless and dangerous to assume we can "save" the less interested Players who don't care. It's just as masochistic to assume we're going to "cure" any table's lackluster story potential, because they often meet just to throw dice around and shout at the GM'... There are a LOT of people who enjoy that "style" and more power to them at THEIR OWN TABLES... SO we try. We are few, in the bigger picture of Role Play in general. We may be a happy and proud few, but we are few. We try to so interest, engage, and interact with these other Players, but when encountering a "blank sheet" PC with an equally "Blank Sheet" Player, there comes a point when you just shrug it off. Remember to breathe and relax... The entire RPG-world of choice is not going to disintegrate or implode and take YOU along with it, because you've managed to find the vacuous persona and his lackluster PC at the table... NOR does your head have to implode for having unwittingly joined a whole group of vacuous Players and similarly flat, uninspired PC's... There are other games, and hopefully better fits. Just try to salvage your night, "I will have fun tonight"... and enjoy whatever looney-tune antics you can inspire ANY FUCKING WAY... Hey, if nobody else around me is going to give a damn, it lets ME off that hook of giving a damn... After all... Fair is fair. ;o)

You're right. And I often ask probing questions of RP-enthusiasts to see if they really understand why they enjoy this art form. Is their experience something that's happened to them, they liked it, and they want more... clueless as to what's gone into it? (Think someone eating an expensive meal.) OR Did they contribute, build, work, think, feel, and navigate through something that was meaningful and impactful - intentionally. You're right that the second type of RPer is rarer, but I honestly believe - with some encouragement, the first type (the clueless consumer) can be provoked into becoming the second type. It usually involves them tasting what they like, but then being deprived of it, so they go searching.

Just be sure to read your friends well before trying this. Some people - such as those at my table - might have problems with direct questions like what are expressed here, so you may have to come at it in a different way. My personal recommendation: wait until after some large battle or other milestone is finished and everyone's resting, then start RPing a "bonding moment" to the characters. "Well...that was gruesome. It looks like we may be working together longer then we thought. I know we've given our names before and I was fine with that, but that was when we were going on just the ONE adventure together; since it looks like we'll be joined up for a while, how about we actually learn why we're all here?"
@Charmlethehedgehog

I quite agree! Reading your players as the GM (or other players) is always a great way to make sure what you say is impactful and pushes them into rp-ing more!

Watch Liam O'Brien's characters in Critical Role for a masterclass, especially the second season and his character Caleb. Hell the lot of them have become so good at it, in some situations it's the plot moments created by the gm/dm that shines light on the glimpse of a background that causes a player to take things into their own hands - again see Caleb and Beau's interactions with him

one reason why i like text-based roleplay over in-person or voice is that it creates natural spots for PCs to small talk or converse waiting for the GM to write up a big ol' text wall to describe a new area, or what happened after downtime, or in our case waiting for him to draw new areas of the map that he didn't expect us to go in
@GoodOldGamer
@GoodOldGamer 5 лет назад
A good way to encourage RPing is during combat. Shy or new RPers generally play for the heroic combat. So, if you get them to describe their epic moments (i.e. Critical Role's 'How do you wanna do this?')… they can form the character over time, through their actions. That can then expand to the rest of the game. Encourage them to retell and embellish their epic moments at the tavern or inn to wow the commoners. 👍

For me, the most important questions to ask myself about any character (PC or NPC) are, "What do they want?", "Why do they want it?" and, "How do they intend to get it?" Everything else flows out from there. How they interact with the world, events, NPCs, PCs. It all comes from those three central questions.

But I find them always addressing things from the D&D angle, restricting options to the 5E classes, etc. gets a bit old after a while. I joined my boyfriend's game that his group has been playing together for years. I had been hearing about his games every Saturday for a few months before I joined. He would always tell me how his group never role plays much and really only rps with him, the DM. So when I joined I started role playing my character over the top but not all the time. I knew when my character would talk and when they wouldn't. I would try to pull them to role play back at me and they all try and I can tell they were really into it and enjoyed it. I talked to them all out of game and asked if they wanted to be more immersive in the role playing and they all said yes. So I suggested we get together before the next sessions and talk about where our characters heads are at and what they feel about certain things happening and how they feel about each other and with the information everyone could maybe talk to other group members to see if they wanted to be on board with a role play moment with their characters. And some thought the idea was a good one and some others got really defensive and said I was trying to script the game and they like things to be 100 percent authentic and for some reason they don't want people to know how their character is going to behave because they want it to be a surprise like a reveal or something. My response was that clearly this group wants to role play but is having trouble doing it because of nerves or shyness or whatever it is so this authenticity isn't really working because the group doesn't know how to play their characters in terms of relating or rping with each other. And I wasn't suggesting things be scripted. Just...like a little plan ahead so people can have time to think about how their character will play out in a particular moment like in the video Guy suggests his player get an addiction and the dwarf helps him overcome it. No matter what I say these group members are not on board and only want the role play to be 100% improv with no suggestions out of game. Is this a common thing that players feel? That it is cheating to meet out of game and hang out and talk about cool things their characters can do together? My group discusses battle tactics out of game all of the time and they see no problem with it. So how is this any different?
@Rykiniafan1
@Rykiniafan1 5 лет назад
idk seems like insecurity to me. if u plan ahead and think about it honestly it could reflect ur feelings instead of having the excuse of "oh no i just thought of this in the moment and threw it out there cause i thought itb be fun. sounded better in my head hehe" at least that is what i see most of the time. as soon as conversations get real they slow down and get awkward. im just super direct and honest which helps. its less awkward if i said something super "embarrassing" already :P but it could also be the case that they really wanna improv. like maybe they watch a big dnd show with great players and the best jokes seem to be super random in the moment and others play off of those and make it a great session. a big thing is also trying to organically trying to grow the character through the game. so if u just say beforehand "my character will do this and this and fail here and realize the mistake this way" the story is just something to beat so u get ur character to where u want him to be at. which will prolly not make sense since ur just shoehorning it in. so maybe theyre trying to organically grow the chars but just arent really good at that yet? if u figured it out by now id love to know ^^

As someone who puts a lot of emphasis on the actual roleplay, and spends hours to build my characters personality and quirks, I'd never agree to your suggestion. Having the characters get to know each other organically, is a huge part of the fun in roleplaying.
@jennylobato2300
@jennylobato2300 4 года назад
@@vikingraven4758 I absolutely agree with you and I love role-playing that is on the spot improv. It was just this particular group didn't actually do any role playing especially with each other. The suggestions I had brought up were just ideas to do temporarily to get them all feeling less nervous/used to thinking on the spot as a different person. It wasn't meant to be a permanent thing but just like a training wheel or something to give them a little confidence to actually get them to do it. If I was with a group of people who role played in any way then I wouldn't have made the suggestions. I guess I was feeling frustrated because they all expressed that they wanted to be role play heavy but then didn't actually do any role playing and no one else offered any suggestions lol Eventually the game ended and afterward everyone agreed one a few things: 1) there were too many players (8 players) 2) some players kept changing characters too much 3) too many people playing on their phones 4) little in character communication (this was the one I was trying to help with) Hopefully once this covid situation is over we can get together and play again. We had a new game with 5 people and we were planning to play then quaruntine lol
@vikingraven4758
@vikingraven4758 4 года назад
@@jennylobato2300 Yea I see the issue then. 1) Personally I'd never hold a session with more than 4 players. 3 is the sweet spot for me, as I can still concentrate on giving them all an equal amount of attention, without there being too long of a wait for each player. 3 players also allows for a sufficient amount of random chaos to actually keep me intrigued. The more my plans as a DM are messed up the better. Keeps me on my toes so to say. 2) Did you roll dice for stats? I've seen this be a problem then, and thus always tell my players to use point buy or standard. 3) You may not like the idea of this, but give them 2 warnings. 1st time be nice about it, 2nd time be strict about it, and 3rd time kick them from the game. If they are not there to play with you, they may as well not be there at all. Sometimes people have to take an incoming phone-call, or quickly answer a message, but if that conversation lasts any longer than it have to I'd say the same rule applies. 4) If they are new players that's pretty normal in my experience, and it should be perfectly fine so long as they work on it. I have seen some players though that have played for years and years, and continue to make stat blocks with no observable personality or motivation. Who can spend half an hour describing their round in combat because of constant brakes, and the fact that they constantly insist on reading up the full stat block and flavor text of some random ability they have every time it comes into question or they intend on using it. If you have the patience for that I'll call you a saint, but for most players I think that would be a major turn of. So as harsh as it can be, you sometimes have to tell them to "fix it or leave". Some take the critique and become better for it, while others don't. And just because someone are good friends with you, that doesn't always make them fun to play TTRPGs with. Play with people you enjoy playing with.

Honestly it sounds like you were being pushy with a group you were new to. If none of them wanted to do it, you shouldn't feel the need to get on here and defend yourself. I think there are a million better ways to develop RP at a table that are better than planning it outside of the game, that sounds like the worst way to do it.

Guy, I just started watching and learning from your own experiences. As a GM myself I have a problem with one dimensional characters from time to time. My friend, for now let's call him Lance. Has great energy and zeal for his characters. But they're all mostly the same. The jerk that's out for himself, confrontational with the other characters at times, willing to in fight in the group because his character is just out to be an ass. Recently we decided to kind of turn it on his character and make the story about him. Our characters are going to help him find his elvish clan that he'd lost for two years. Kind of took the air out of his character being a jerk because it shocked him in game. So perhaps the shock factor can help sometimes with helping to branch a player out into playing a different kind of character. Already his character is more relaxed, less aggressive to the other players, and is opening up more to them on the journey. Thank you for making your videos. I'll be checking out more for certain.

I play in a group where RP and character growth is important, we are playing our characters from lvl 1 up, now on level 3 and already all of our characters have received some form of character growth. Mine had to experience her first "failure" and then had to report back to the family of the man she was sent to bring back and tell them he was dead and gone, it really shook her, she also is a Tiefling that absolutely loathes demons and therefore really dislikes herself and the other Tiefling character but she doesn't quite understand that her prejudices and hate are not really warranted nor does she fully understand that she hates herself, The other Tiefling learned the very hard way not to split the party, our Low int Goliath has been learning slowly how to properly care for herself and others and she even finally learned how to hunt, our fighter learned what fighting is really about in a cool zen spectral samurai fight which took him away from the sleeping party. Clara my Tiefling cleric woke up and freaked out, after losing someone she was charged with bringing home, after losing the other Tiefling and especially since she is sweet on the fighter, she panicked and it was a sight to behold, I never ever thought Clara when I made her would ever panic, or lose her cool in a tense situation but there she was, panicking, crying. from lvl 1 to lvl 3 she became a person and not just numbers, she is like a real person within the DMs fictional world. It also helps that our DM has worked so hard to make sure our characters get fleshed out and has facilitated so much RP, character growth and a rich, beautiful world in which we can do it. I know i'm probably lucky to be in a group where everyone wants the same thing out of the game but when a group fits well, this game is just magical

To quickly give my thoughts on the asking characters questions, to build them as "living being" rather than paper cutouts of concepts, I think it's more about the answer you give or get rather than what you asked. You say you need to ask questions that don't conjure fantastical or "imagenery" responses, but that's very subjective and depends on the person giving an answer. Certainly some questions are better to get non-fantastical answer, such as the "What do you want now/long term", but again i would argue that no question is "fool proof". I am going to use the "Where do you come from?" as an example. Like mentioned already in the video, bad answer is something along the lines of "I come from Mistvale. It's in Helmenskarl". Without map and/or previous knowledge of these places, this gives other players nothing they can relate to and/or put in any sort of context inside their head. How ever if someone would answer "I come from far south. From the small town of Mistvale, that lies within the great kingdom of Helmenskalr. Maybe you have heard of it?" gives the players alot of "imagenary" information, but it's complimented by information that gives context and character "hooks" they can relate to or use to build further rapport. By "grounding" the fantastical answer in to non-fantastical/"imagenary" concepts, can improve greatly how other players see your character. So to conclude my opinion, it's not the question that matters, as much as the answer given.

The bf was a bit of a murder hobo until I invited him to my gurps game. If you look at D&D/PF, over half the books are combat mechanics, which unintentionally encourages this. I would encourage you guys to suggest a one shot or short adventure in a system that encourages story telling. Easier/quicker systems like Heroquest 2 and FATE Core have elements that help develop multidimensional characters. That way when you go Back, people are thinking about this stuff. I really love GURPS for it's flaws, but it's a bit more involved

One way I have found to help with this is, use it against them, just a little bit. So no one has a defined past, OK fine, Player 1 you get a bill, it's for your fathers drinking debt, do you pay it? Player 2 your estranged daughter is getting married to someone you don't like but you have been told you are not welcome at the wedding. When they players says hey what do you mean my father's dept? You can point out that just because they didn't develop the character it doesn't mean you as the GM can't assign them some back story... and the easy way to avoid it, is to define stuff before you do. These also might lead to nice plot hooks as well.

I feel like this video should be called "How to make your GM's life that much easier (though all his great player videos could be called that, but this one in particular). As a gm, I spend a lot of time trying to make sure each player is getting what they want out of the game. If even one other player was doing that too, it would make it 1,000 times easier, and let me spend that other tine planning cooler stuff. Any advice on how to encourage players to this? Aside from directing them to this video, obviously. Thanks for the video. Keep up the great work!

I think this topic is worthy to make a "How to be a better GM" over, as I have seen many GMs who do not leave enough space for the characters to play out their interrelations. Sadly enough many GMs are so caught up in the world/story/setting/whatever they create, that there are not enough space for the characters to be in! Or: GMs who do have a railroading approach to GMing (The One Dimensional Game Master), coercing the characters into the roles the GM expect! One of the best GMs, I know of, is able to take a toilet break, in the mist of the action, without the players notice he was away! Which I think is a good self test, as GM: Can you get your characters so much into play that you can find a proper moment for to do a toilet break, without the players noticing?

For your "Any advice on how to encourage players to this?" question I will recommend playing out preludes. Prelude is (sadly enough) rarely used, and for those who do not know what it is: Prelude is played out between "Session Zero" and "Session One", where the GM take a full session with each of the players individually, it is a part of the character creation process, where a part of the back story is played out. (Yes, there are a lot work for the GM to do in a very short time... Tempting to skip doing preludes... But in the long run that extra work really make a difference!) This way you, as GM, do help the player through the character creation process while you get to know that character. The trick here is you play NPCs in their backstory, and during that you can simulate the PC to PC interaction you wish to get (more of) when the group is assembled. Use the prelude to get to know the player and the character, their motivations and expectations. Same way let the player know what your motivations and expectations are. Far easier to do when you have the players one at a time, and you can do it as a dialog! (Where when you try to do that for all the players, at the same time, it become a monolog...)

Just had to quit a game 'cause I had a railroader DM who cared so much about their story it felt like we couldn't have real choice. Sounded like our rolls didn't actually matter with how they encouraged us to play different classes in a game that didn't allow you to roll something if you didn't have the skill, which is a huge negative unless it's a freaking way out there kind of skill. Combined that where they literally changed some things around. Not events but INFO we had to ROLL for, because one class type wasn't there. It ended up the game being where each player could only really participate in certain scenarios, and in a game centered around mystery with info mostly gathered in the form of dialog it meant those of us not playing the face character had to wait for combat or when there was actually something to find. Npcs only existed to where they mattered for the plot, unless we did something to make them appear- and then we were shunted back onto the path. DM would not wait for us to have time to do anything unless it involved their plot. I would try to rp with other players and get ignored. There was even a point where I tried to ask for more info before an event would occur, we had time to set something up, and the DM just skipped to it while ignoring me.

Oh man, I wish I'd known this advice before starting the RP campaign I'm running! My players would have ADORED this opportunity. Next campaign I am definitely doing this! I've also found that allowing the players in-between sessions where they can RP to their hearts' content until I can sense things are wrapping up has been really helpful for building bonds between the party and giving them opportunities to develop their characters. No encounters, just letting the characters talk to each other, interact with favorite NPCs in the area, discuss their next steps or difficulties they encountered in the last session... I'm very lucky to have some exceptional RPing friends though, so I know this would not be easy with many groups! Needless to say, on the topic of the video itself, I am absolutely going to be more conscious about following Guy's advice here. I often essentially do #1 and #2, but I've never actually gone up to other players and asked them what they might want out of a D&D game. I'm really excited to see what kinds of stories we'll come up with in the future!
@larsdahl5528

+Emarella > Yes, I hope our channel host, Guy, will make videos about this. As it is often the GM who are in fault, when role play fails, as the GM do not give the PCs enough space to role play in! Four GM created "steam rollers" I have seen far too often, steam rollering the players: (1) The NPCs become the most important characters in the campaign, reducing the PCs to minor support roles. (2) The GM's world/history/setting/whatever become more important than the PCs. (3) The RPG game system rules hogs up the attention, reducing the PCs to victims. (4) The dice steal all the attention, taking over the control of the PCs. I sense you have found what I look for in GMs: The ability to give the PCs the space they need to play in! And I think it is more fun to be GM when you can lean back and observe what unfold when the PCs have the initiative! That is where I think the "GM, can you (in the middle of the game) take a toilet break, without the players noticing?" is a good test of GMing quality! Usually: If the GM can not show up for a session, then the session get cancelled. However: I have once had a GM so good, that we was able to play, even if he could not make it!

I let my character's familiar empathic link determine her tendencies. She still has her own personality, but her link guides her development. For example, her spider familiar influenced her taking up seamstress as a profession, as well as misgendering people based on their height. It's not a defining trait, but rather a temptation to resist.
@jaysw9585
@jaysw9585 5 лет назад
My issue is too multidimensional characters. The end result is characters that have extensive stories that really add nothing and are often so pigeon-holed in what they'd do or not do, or even can do, they become a liability to advancing the story. This almost always happens at the start of any adventure. Another issue is you end up with players that are overly protective and invested in there characters. These are the people that quickly rage quit when something they don't like happens. For instance, I had a player turned into an undead during an encounter, and while I had provided a way out, the player was so upset, they didn't want to play anymore. I have heard similar stories from other DMs that had players just stop attending when their character died. I have taken it upon myself to make sure players understand my expectations of them, in addition to their expectations of me. I find the best solution is to ask the players their character's motivations and have them define their alignment to me. After that, I provide the backstory that puts them in this adventure. While this may take some of the character creation away from the player, I often find the players quickly adopt my back story and I am able to use it to bring their participation into my adventure with out the hassle of trying to persuade them to participate.

All of this reminds me of one of my favorite and most successful characters, we'll call her Freya. In terms of gameplay, yeah, she did some great things, killed a lot of stuff, but her development as a character was what gave the game a unique, memorable twist that event shifted the main plot itself. Freya came from a country that was known for its cruelty, and in turn, she was a massive asshole at the start of the campaign. She had a child with the king of this country and, in turn, was one of his personal elite squad of powerful mages. The child ended up being the Big Bad for that campaign. Over the course of the story, she basically learned The Power of Friendship(tm) and fell in love with another one of the PCs. That other PC ended up sacrificing himself to redeem the Big Bad instead of just outright killing him so that Freya could have her child back and have a second chance at being a good mother to him. I know it's only semi related, but all of this made the game really memorable to most of us in the game (Except one guy who was a self centered tool, but we don't play with him anymore so we don't care) and we're excited to explore that setting again. The story proves the kind of stuff being said in the video, because once we started exploring the characters while we were exploring the physical world in the game, it became that much more interesting and engaging. We weren't the only people to have your characters do this, there were other interpersonal relationships that influenced the endgame, but that was one of the more major ones.

I really love level 1 and 2 but personally, when I play D&D I like to know as little as possible about the other players narratives and motives so that they can naturally unfold throughout the campaign. This may just be a personal preference though, as I normally just play with close friends and I already know if they have certain things going on with them, but I guess it really just depends on personal preference and the people who you are playing with. I do agree with asking about a player's goals in "session zero" during character creation though.

I don't know why I a random internet person feel like I had to share this but oh well, now i've typed it out might aswell share it. Reaching the age of twenty five last week I've known what I want for the past few years. After a near decade of thought, Life going from being born to dying at the speed of time, I want to enjoy my stay, I want to live with as few regrets as I can and I want a bit of piece and quiet, read stories people have imagined, watch mindnumbing things on tv as long as they are entertaining. So I stopped watching the news or popular series, only what I like. yet several years after this realisation I am not happy. I am still depressed I still have decades of life in front of me, I'll soon be living with a lovely girl that loves me more then I thought was possible and still the mountain of life seems more bothersome then it's worth. In character I can live as someone that has purpose or is strugeling with the meaningless of life or the loss of something important or seeking power for revenge. Now as a "boy" with not enough lifeexperience I've often told myself wait and see, it'll make sence, it'll get better, this will pass. DND for me is a game, a game that can very easily be turned into a mirror for the player if the player "synchronises" well with the character he or she is playing. It allowed me to see my own wishes and desires. life is a party I was told as long as I hang up my own party decoration.

What do I want out of life? I want to own a home. Nothing too fancy or esoteric but my own little castle where I know I can be who I am and do what I want. There, in the living room, will be a table surrounded by many chairs and those chairs will, at some point, be filled by friends new and old and it will be there we live lives more grandiose than our own. We will be mighty fighters, powerful mages and deft thieves; people whom many will never know nor understand if they are not privy to this table or home. What do I want from life? I want these experiences to last as long as possible and to share them with anyone willing to be a part of them. That is what I want.

I like the advice of player interaction and interest in each others stories. A fairly common issue is that some players take over and a large part of the session becomes them doing stuff and interact with NPCs. The opposite is that insecure or shy player who could use some help from the group and/or GM involuntary become that backseat player. There is also, do we want story progress, some feel that player interaction is "a waste of time", maybe because it's rarely rewarded.

This is exactly why I scheduled a non-game night (Gamer's BBQ); it's a people-game, and we can get to know the people who are talking at us, at the table - talk about the game and assess tastes, etc . . We will have completed a mini-campaign, and are fairly well along in the other campaign (the 'main' game is open-ended.) I recently had a player leave; one reason was that I was a jerk and criticized his play-style on-line, not aware that he was also a member of that group (I didn't name him, but used specific examples), and the other reason being that (in my view and in the view of others at the table), he wanted to game the same way that we had gamed twenty years ago. Also, we had clearly gone in two different directions in many other respects. Once, he actually said to me, "I come to the table (only) for the game." I saw another video (by Matt Colville) which raised the obvious point that such statements are a bad sign. Anyway, the Gamer's BBQ will help to put us all in the same space, allow us to get to know each other better, and thus hopefully improve the experience at the table. Or they will discover that I am just a big jerk and will continue to show up only to kill my pet orcs and demons!

John DeathShadow DnD is a social game and it's not just about your character playing the game. You're meant to be socializing and having fun. DnD isn't an RPG where it's only your character and the story to keep you entertained. If you don't wish to socialize with the people you play with outside of DnD then you're not playing with friends. DnD is meant to be played with friends and it's not nearly as much fun otherwise.

Are you really friends with your co-workers, I know with very few exceptions I'm not and only one of my co-workers that I'm friends with did I not know for when I was a teenager.

John DeathShadow If you want your DnD game to be a combat grindfest akin to Dark Souls then, by all means, go for it. Murderhobos gotta play too, after all. But that's not what real players want. As a side note, I'm friends with all of my co-workers because I'm a social person who cares about the people I'm going to be dealing with for the foreseeable future. It would be stupid to treat people as disposable when you see and interact with them every day.

Fin Well not a murder hobo but also not buddy buddy with everyone I like a tactical games were everyone has a role to play (wait Role to Play, Role Play Game, maybe that is where the name came from or maybe it has to do with being a tactical straight game from the roots seeing as how it was built off off war gaming like we see in movies where one tank is ten but it was from a medieval or Renaissance style.) You can play with your friends if that is what you want or you can make friends with everyone you play with if that's what floats your boat, but at the same time I can play with people and not care about the player just like I didn't care about the people I went to school with, with really one exception and she's my fiancee now and no I'm not a teenager I was born over 30 years ago. And as for being friends with your co-workers will it must be nice to trust them to show up and do thier jobs seeing as how in the three months I've been at this job only 6 of the 16 of us have been there the whole time and that includes me. So my co-workers are actually disposable to me and my shift when I started was 12 strong and so was night shift (24 total) now the total employees are 16 and 5 of that 6 was actually from my shift.

I'm learning a lot about how to be a better player from these videos. What I really want to know how to get rid off is players stereotyping one another's characters. I currently play 3 different characters in 3 different campaigns (each of the other guys is a DM of his own campaign and they take turns DMing each week, only myself and the one girl in the group don't DM). As players, they all expect certain things from my character, no matter which one of the three I am playing as. I don't do voices, or act well, but my characters actions and the words they choose to speak, the way they interact with others, all those things are radically different, but still the others at the table burden me with always having to do certain things, specially problem solving. But when I'm playing my Paladin, I don't have as much resources to solve problems as I do when playing my Wu-Jen, as well as moral limitations to how the problem can be solved. And because my Paladin is polite and and a good mediator, sometimes they expect my Warlock kid who's no more than a street urchin to do the same and come up with a sane, measured plan. I'm always split between acting like my character never would and help the group succeed or staying in character and watch the world burn.

Anyway we have a few new players who are unfamiliar with RP and had characters they weren’t expecting to get character development. For example, one guy played a vampire barbarian fighter bard mix who started out as a joke character similar to Alucard from the series Helsing Ultimate Abridged. However after a few sessions of RP between my character and my friends character he started considering his backstory and using that to expand his character. His backstory was that he was Alexander Von Roeyen (Zarovich), youngest brother of Strahd and Sergei Von Zarovich who’s traveling with the party. As of now my character (Zelda Alagondar) is very close with Alexander and is helping him realize that he’s not a monster like his brother. I’ve done similar things for other players but this story is the most prominent. It’s funny how the plot can take on a mind of it’s own if you play your character right. One aspect I was not expecting but find entertaining is the forbidden romance between Alexander and Zelda. Keep in mind that the last thing my character wanted was to be charmed by a Von Zarovich. Ironically, what started as playful banter and a great team turned into a wholesome yet dangerous romance.

I wish I had players as good as you are. I love the story, the great adventure, the good companions. But all I get are players playing evil characters badly and party miss trust.

In a week or two, I'm gonna be running a homebrew Campaign based on Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and in order to encourage the players to put thought into their Backstory (As well as add an interesting aspect to the roleplay and strategy in general) is to have the players starting level be based off of the quality of their backstory. I've made a checklist with 20 checks to make, and I'll divide each players number of checks by 4 then round down no matter what. This will be the level they start at. The checks I'm going with are as follows; 1. Has character beyond plot 2. Active in their own story 3. Motivation 4. Fears/Cautions 5. Conflict 6. Complexity 7. Strengths 8. Flaws 9. Tone (Example: Serious character doesn't have silly backstory) 10. Distinctive Look (I can envision them and distinguish them from background characters) 11. Emotion 12. Mystery/Secret (Something they want to know or don't want others to know.) 13. Potential for Growth 14. Consistency 15. History 16. Good Name (Looking at you Rub Rub) 17. Livable (Can be tolerated by the table at the very least) 18. Interesting 19. Class Choice Justified 20. Race taken into consideration This is still a work in progress list which I have not shown my players, but I think its a good start for an unbiased way to make this system work. It also doesn't force somebody to make a big backstory, but rewards those who take the time to do so.

Forgive me if i come across as a dick but i feel you should make that rule known and show the list to your players, can you imagine if there is that one gleaming example starting at level 5 and one other starts at 1? not only will that be a total ball ache to balance in terms of combat but holy shit will the 1st level player feel like total ass. Potentially punishing your players for not necessarily being the most creative isn't a good choice, the reward from having a fleshed out character like your checklist wants is just that, the player with all of that will have a more rewarding experience, they don't need an arbitrary level boost they are already having a better time.

This is likely due to the wording that you got this impression, but I do fully well intend to show the players the list. However, the way I've found with the player I've tested on is I will let them start blind, but then when I get their story I will show them the list and tell them how much they got, giving them the opportunity to improve if they so choose. And I have made the rule known to them, and actually made sure to ask their approval first. All were onboard, so that's why Im trying to make it work. Another thing of note is that they will not receive better starting gear, but simply have better stats. Also, the only way for a level 5 is for every single criteria to be fulfilled, which is unlikely to happen

Okay so I watched this scared I might be 1 dimensional. Now I'm thinking I'm over 3 dimensions. As my friends and I have started a new campaign and someone introduced himself and ignored half the party, claiming they're not "intelligent enough", while my bard was fuming at both his arrogance and assumptions, knowing he wasn't going to have a good time. They managed to come to a truce and can be acknowledge but when this guy's character falls asleep on his watch, my bard takes up issue with it the next morning and slaps him with his bed roll starting a fight

Need your advise Guy... Stuck on backstory for my bard... Got the cliche basics of noble birth and seventh son to be redundant brat of starched family to focus on exploring town, hanging out with servants, playing music to cheer up neglected mother... But what something to spice him up. He's a nice guy, doesn't believe in class or racial issues, lives hero stories and playing lute left behind by fugitive elf lady he seems his Muse (she died or left...?) He left the family keep to explore magic and music, to seek out his lost elf lady,, to boldly entertain where only his Muse could outshine... He loves idea of adventure with a group, not to be the hero but see heroes in action. His real noble name is Izak Uradel... But he calls himself Merrek Eironeia (strong Irony).... He just seems flat.

A lot of "rules" and ideas for actors also apply to roleplaying. What is your characters "scene objective", and what is their "super objective", the concept of "self isolation" insofar as merging enough with the character role that you overcome fear of performing in front of others/audience, etc...

GMs are instructed by game rules to incorporate fun into games, but players are never told this is possible to accommodate each other. The vital importance of Session Zero should bring any corebook instead of chucked as an afterthought in a supplement or even never at all.

I'm not sure I would have gone with "multi-dimensionality" as the topic for this video, but the content is no less good. It's nice to see something in the vein of "how players can add to the game," both in terms of the game itself, and making it better for other players. Too often, games can be "GM gives, players take." The notion of giving back is something that generally needs to be taught, it doesn't often come naturally, I find. Some of the more modern game systems have built-in help for creating inter-character bonds, which is useful. Some of them even give material reward for advancing those stories, so it encourages even the munchkins at the table to give it a whirl. Some of them even find they like it!

I DM and my friends dm and we all have different styles. Some DMs feel like I'm playing with them, other's I'm playing against (like chess match), some you have to fight rules wise (example: why can't I counter spell the fireball from the guy 15 ft away from me?), and this is just a few examples. I have enjoyed watching your videos and especially your videos about different types of DMs. I was wondering if we could see a question like video or questionnaire to help show what type of DM you are. Asking questions of the person to determine what type of DM you are (best example of what I mean is like the harry potter quiz which sorts you into different houses based on your answers).

Yeah, I made genealogy tree for my character, history with family dislikes, love for pretty things etc and GM didn't even look at this all :| Especially that half of players use mobile app as their character sheet [so they forced imperial units and english because "it's easier with app" :/].

What do you do (as a GM) when you ask players what they want out of the campaign, or what they want their character to achieve, etc, and get basically no feedback. For example, "I don't care," or "anything is fine by me." Responses like that frustrate me because I have nothing to go on, and those players tend to be dice rollers. They don't interact with the world around them or with NPCs. Is there something I could do to help them be more engaged?
