Are You A Real Motorcyclist?
rvz.la/2nBC4ZC
What makes a real motorcyclist? Well, that depends who you ask. Lemmy, Spurgeon, and Joe are back on the couch for another season of Highside / Lowside! This time, they’re opening the season with an in-depth discussion of what makes a true motorcyclist, and what that means for the motorcycling world at large.
HS / LS is available as a podcast. Listen to the full, uncut discussion on these services.

Hi guys I really enjoyed your talk with Ryan F9 and hoping to see it on here on this RU-vid series. Please please consider a discussion with Fast Eddie at Motojitsu. Greg Widmar is really passionate about getting riders to look at improving themselves which will make their riding so much safer. Its so important that this message is spread, too many riders die because they themselves have done something stupid or could of avoided the accident by having some skills. Thanks for the highside/lowside podcasts they have been great.

for me, you just have to love motorcycles to consider yourself a motorcyclist: i used to have a neighbor (he died last year) who was paralized since 8 yo, and every sunday that i took my motorcycle out, he asked his dad to take him out only to see it and to listen to the engine, we had tons of afternoons reading and watching videos about motorcycles... he never had the chance to rode one, but his passion worth (for me) the badge of being a motorcyclist

JustThaor "Some ride all day every day because it's cheap. India and other developing countries. Are all those people not motorcyclists? they ride and fix their rides way more than most "real riders"" --- Just to start off, I don't mean this in a degrading way and hope it doesn't come off that way.... I think it depends on what you consider a motorcyclist then. If it's broad enough to cover anyone riding a motorcycle for any reason, then the term is really meaningless. You might as well consider those people who ride a bus every day a busser, or a someone who rides the subway every day to be a subwayer. They don't do it because they are enthusiasts and they wouldn't consider themselves as such (most at least) but they do it because it's the best way for them to get around. Someone who rides a motorcycle simply because it's the best way to get around but is completely indifferent to that mode of transportation otherwise, in my opinion and others I think, not an enthusiast and not what we would consider a true motorcyclist. As I stated in another post here, it is the same with bicycles and people who just ride them to get around are not cyclists simply because a cyclist is an enthusiast. People who walk around their house or neighborhood, simply because they have to get from one place to another, aren't considered walkers, if they are, the term is meaningless because most humans on earth walk somewhere everyday.

@@fredman1085 Yes, and then there is the thing about after riding a motorcycle how can anyone NOT be enthused about it? The freedom, the open view, the sound of the engine, the very fast stopping and quick take off ability, the fact that we can go where 4 wheels cannot; like avoiding an accident with those fantastic brakes, and being able to slip between vehicles or around the sides? Long ago riding with 2 other bikes, we were cruising down a road into a huge valley. We could see this long long empty road going for miles with no traffic. You with me? and then the leader decided to see how fast we could go. We were on ancient bikes, Indians and Harleys. so we opened them up and got all the way to 115mph, and at that point we came to a long dip in the road which we could NOT see further back. Guess what? Both lanes were blocked by Semi's, 18 wheelers one facing us, the other away from us. Hmmm. also on the right shoulder there was a government car, blocking that way. we had 2 seconds to stop, impossible at even legal speed. The leader had better brakes than me, so I had braked for less than a second and had to swerve to the right, he shot between the 18 wheelers, I went, with some difficulty through the narrow place between the car and the truck, and saw 2 guys LEAP head first out of the way. We were still traveling nearly at our peak speed. Amazing that no one got hurt. This would have been about the same if we had been traveling at the legal limit. It all happened in 2 or 3 seconds. I was 17 years old. Always expect the unexpected.

I would love to see a discussion about motorcycle safety equipment vs looks and where the line is drawn (i.e. frame sliders, engine guards, tail tidy, smaller turn signals, etc). A discussion about how to start out dirt/dual sport riding would be awesome as well. It's super intimidating to me as there's no beginner "dirt school" near me and the bikes seem to typically by super tall (I'm a nice short 5'5)

One other point about wrenching on your own bike: some of us dont have the space to do so. I live in a condo, no garage. I cannot just go outside and do repairs on my bike. Besides, I can easily afford someone to do that stuff for me. I do do some basic stuff-adding parts on, and, if I get access to a garage, I will change my oil. But, I like to keep the service records clean, and bring mine to a dealer for its scheduled maintenance. But, thats me. I once had a guy tell me I wasnt a real biker. I asked him how many miles he did in a season. Me, in New England, I average about 2k miles a month. From April until October, I largely ride. Every day. He didnt come CLOSE to my mileage. Doesnt make him any less a biker than I am. Or more than one. Ride your own ride. Who cares what others think and do.

i've just recently started doing my own chain and tire changes. and i really do feel like more of a "real" motorcyclist. i think there are levels. if your ride has front forks, your a motorcyclist, and if you exist in the same world as i do, then you're also real. but if you change your own oil / chain / tires / brake fluid / et cetera, then you're just on another level than the guy that doesn't have time / inclination. he's still a motorcyclist, but he's an executive motorcyclist. a white collar motorcyclist. but we're still all bikers... i wave at the guy riding a scooter in full traffic on I-35W the same way i wave at the guy on a Z650 who never leaves the access road (i really do see those guys on my daily commute), the same way i wave at the harley rider. talking about working on your own bike... i just saw an article today from cycleworld.com that said modern motorcycle engines should last pretty much forever. makes me feel better about my sv650 with over 36k miles after less than a year and a half.

It's always a treat to listen to you guys. I've been riding on and off, mostly on, since I was a kid. Dirt bikes first then street bikes when I could get the license. I'm almost 40 now and got out of bikes for a number of years when my now wife and first got engaged and were focused more on our house and other financial obligations. She was also not a rider so it was more of a solo activity for me at that point. A couple of years ago I decided I missed it too much and wanted to get back into it. She also wanted to try, but was a little apprehensive/afraid. After looking at many kinds/sizes/styles of bikes we ended up buying a maxi scooter, Suzuki Burgman 400. It's refreshing to hear you guys say that's still a motorcyclist, but I have to tell you I certainly didn't feel like a motorcyclist anymore when we had it. But, it did get her into riding as a passenger so it served a purpose. Fast forward a couple of years to now and we recently parted ways with a Triumph Tiger 800 for a Bonneville T120. But she's still my passenger and I am a motorcyclist. To your other part of the discussion, regarding people who don't ride being actual motorcyclists, I would disagree. I consider them motorcycle enthusiasts. I shoot archery and know people who don't, but are interested...they aren't archers. If you like hunting shows or magazines but don't go in the woods looking for game you're not a hunter, you're an enthusiast. Just my opinion but I think you actually have to do the activity to be considered whatever the term is...motorcyclist, archer, hunter, etc. That's a defining part of it for me...being in the woods before dawn and waiting possibly all day for a deer to walk by and then the adrenaline you get when it finally does...not getting that from a magazine.

Pete sanrafs So someone can’t be a motorcyclist unless they have passion for it? Makes no sense. If someone drives 100 miles a day commuting on a motorcycle, but doesn’t necessarily love it, he’s still a motorcyclist. The term “Real” biker is a gatekeeping attempt by people who never achieved anything more in their lives than logging hours on their bike.

Their eyes always brighten like a kid at Christmas! Conversely, I bought that first bike from an 82 yr old man who had traded up. He started riding at 60 and went all over US and Canada on that 82 Magna. I still own that bike and a ‘13 Triumph Explorer. I’ve ridden both year’round. If you asked my distant relatives or any acquaintance of mine to tell you one thing about me they would say "He rides a motorcycle everywhere". I am a father, a stepfather, a husband, loyal friend, a son......a truck driver, but they would probably tell you that I ride a motorcycle. Anyone can own a bike, it's what you do with that bike that makes you a motorcyclist. There is no definition, no hard lines, you either are or you arent. In the biker world there are many unspoken rules, protocals and definitions for many things, which is what makes motorcycling and its mysic so attractive to much the general public.

I think there are 2 key attributes of a true motorcyclist. One is that they can appreciate other riders, no matter what they ride, where they ride, who they ride with etc. Sport bike, sport touring, off road, mx, cruiser, full dressed touring, adv etc etc etc. Anything with two wheels. In my experience, "Bikers" do not usually have this attribute, so most "bikers", are not real motorcyclists IMO...Second key attribute is that they would always PREFER to be on a motorcycle, even when they can't be.

Motorcyclists are those who have a bike and love to ride, but it isn't their life. I listened to this via the podcast (Google Play) but popped back here so I could leave a comment. Really excited about the new ideas/format. Normally I don't care about interviews with notable folks, but I think it's a really neat addition to something like this because there are such different aspects and perspective in motorcycling. And who can complain about more Ryan Fortnine? My only feedback would be to try and talk over each other less. It's easy to do in such a freeform format (and that format is part of what gives it such a genuine feel) but the overlap can be hard to decipher in an audio only format. On topic, though: I would define a motorcycle as engine/motor without pedals, handlebars, less than 4 wheels, and seat straddling the frame. Slingshot = nope, because seat. Nikon = Yes, because less than 4. Moped= Depends on seat, but more are not. Electric bicycle= nope, because pedals. Livewire=yes, because straddling frame and no pedals. I think those 4 requirements define pretty clearly. Did I miss anything or outliers?

I have been a motorcyclist for half a century now. I have owned and ridden everything from a Panhead Harley to an old 2 cylinder Honda 125. I didn't like the Harley, it was too big and heavy, and didn't handle well. These days my everyday transportation is a Yamaha XV-250. I live in the mountains of northeast Tennessee. The roads twist and wind through switchbacks here. The Yamaha handles them beautifully, and has enough power for when I want to go somewhere on a highway. It will haul me at 60 MPH all day. Unlike a LOT of riders, I use my motorcycle as my main transportation. As long as there is not ice or snow on the road, or it is raining, I use the bike instead of my truck. I have leather saddlebags and a carrying rack behind the seat, which are enough for most of my shopping trips. I only use my pickup if I have to haul something more than the bike can carry, or carry a passenger. I also do ALL my own mechanics, and have since I started riding. I am an old time biker. People who don't use their bike as a main part of their transportation, who don't do their own repairs, are what we used to call "weekend warriors" or "drugstore cowboys." They may be a "motorcyclist," which covers a lot of territory, but they will never be a BIKER. OH ! And as for that snide term, "aged out," a real biker NEVER "ages out." I'm in my late 60s now, and will keep riding the rest of my life. If I ever get to the point I can't ride, I'll put an end to it.

Born in the fifties, my first two wheels had a third one. I graduated to a "police pedal motorbike" (vintage these days) on my 5th birthday. I was was still a bicyclist, of sorts, smitten with the idea that a motor was pretty cool, even though I had to supply the soundtrack while pedalling the thing. My first "real" moto was a Sears mini-bike in the sixties. I never gave up the Stingray that replaced the Typhoon, but I rode the mini on the street (when mom wasn't looking), in the dirt (when dad would take me to the hills), and on my backyard motocross track. I got a driver's license and a girlfriend and upgraded my bicycle to a Schwinn SuperSport abandoning the mini. I flirted with a moto in college in the seventies. I gave up KZ400 (does regretting letting a bike go qualify one to be a motorcyclist?) to ride a bicycle more and more. I've owned dozens of bicycles both road and mtn. and over the years I've managed to snag a ride or two on friends' motos. For years I lusted for a moto. My wife permitted a Honda S-2000 for a decade, but it just wasn't the same, even with the top down. I still ride my bicycle having toured across all of the western states and a couple times a week for a few hours each. Three years ago I retired, got my wife to accept that I may be worth more dead than alive (that's my standard joke) and bought a Kawasaki Versys. I now tour with and without a motor. I guess that makes me a bimotorcyclist! Wait, that sounds a bit too inclusive...

when i got my first bike, i had no idea the chain needed lube. i was hearing clunking noises for a long time before i finally realized what it was and had the chain switched out, and learned it needs lube every few hundred miles. but i didn't have a car at the time, so it was relatively quick for me to learn that lesson since i put he miles on so quickly. there are people out there who may only ride three or four hundred miles over an entire year. if it's their first bike, it can take an extremely long time to learn that lesson the hard way. and since they rarely ride, the slow degeneration of the chain may not be as noticeable. so it will probably have to get seriously bad before they realize there's even a problem, much less what the problem is. so don't look down your nose at someone who doesn't do perfect maintenance... they may just be inexperienced. if you can, let them know.

In my opinion, A motorcyclists or cyclists is an enthusiast. A motorcyclists is someone who chooses to ride (or loves) motorcycles because they are motorcycles. It is not someone who just uses it as a mode of transportation and no more. To me, it is the same as a cyclist. A true cyclists rides his bike because he loves to ride bicycles, it is not that guy who rides a bicycle because he can't afford a motorized vehicle or perhaps is too young to drive legally. You wouldn't consider anyone and everyone driving a car to be an auto enthusiast.

A real motorcyclist is someone who has a passion for anything 2 wheels and an engine. It doesn’t matter if you ride once a year or every single day. Being a motorcyclist is something within you. Not what you ride, look like or dress like. As far as mopeds go, I know some moped riders that ride 10000 times more often than a lot of motorcycle riders that I know. On that fact alone, I say moped riders are motorcyclists.

I think this one is easy- define how you feel when riding on a motorcycle. Though we may not be able to put it into words the joy it brings , that In itself makes one a motorcyclist. 35 year gap between riding but every time I get on my bike it feels as exciting as day one.

It's situational. If you're on a bike, on the road, a motorcyclist is someone who you can recognize as a fellow motorcyclist, as in, they're riding a two wheeler, or a trike with one wheel in the front. If you're off the bike, it's anyone who you can have a conversation with on motorcycles, who can share their experience. It doesn't really matter what they ride, or how much they ride, or if they still ride or have ever ridden themselves.

Watching & enjoying a 37min meaningless motorcycle conversation till the end...that makes you a motorcyclist. More than any two wheeled day trip, I always enjoyed more the discussions during our coffee breaks. I guess its all about the spirit.

A real motorcyclist doesn't make fun or ridiculizes someone else's ride, a real motorcyclist is whoever had their life changed (in a good way) by motorcycles, by riding them, designing them, riding as a pillion of a loved one, that's it, this kind of people would encourage those who want to become motorcyclists. I have a FXDXI and I don't care riding with friends who ride a 250

Love this episode as always. I think this question like so much else in life is relative. As an Expat Englishman in Indonesia local people, all of whom ride mopeds, scooters and bikes as a matter of course, are amazed that I as a white european do the same. I my past life I was a selective waver. Never scooters, and then degrees of nod or wave depending on my perception of the "seriousness" of the other person. Now in Indonesia waving is impossible as every vehicle here is a bike of some sort. Perhaps there are degrees of motorcyclistness?

I might not ride in the rain, but I'm one of the few bikers out when it's over 95 degrees out I do all my own maintenance & parts. Bought my bike flat, from a guy with no pump/compressor/gauge or tools- dealer warranty maintenance only. He put 3k miles on it & said "I realized Im just not about that life". He's not a motorcyclist

Depending on which state the Slingshot is registered in, it will either be registered as a motorcycle, or as an autocycle. It's classified as an Autocycle in 44 states.[5] Three-point seat belts are fitted; however, it has no airbags or crumple zone, and in certain jurisdictions the driver and passenger must wear motorcycle helmets.[6]

Here's an idea for a topic if you guys ever come back to the wave thing: what non-motorcycles are eligble for waves? Here are some of mine -Anyone who pulls over to let me pass gets a full-arm open-hand wave if it is safe to do so -Ambulances and Fire Trucks I will go out of my way to wave to unless they're in a hurry (lights and siren) -Trailered bikes, sport quads, and snowmobiles get waves if I see them in time. If they're trailering their bike, they're probably bringing it somewhere _to ride it_ or are on the way home from a ride -Kids on bicycles are _mandatory_ wave. Will generally not return wheelies, but that's as much an ability thing for me as a safety thing xD -Will return waves to Slingshots. Morgans get waves -Classic sports cars and supercars get waves -Supercars, muscle cars, hot rods, etc might get waves depending on mood (usually wave variants like horns or hang loose) -AC/Shelby Cobras and Replicas get waves if they are wearing a Bonanza or Custom 500 with a sun peak and goggles. Has only happened to me once and it made my day :D -Will return waves to bicycles, though this is uncommon. Definitely wave to bicycles if it's pissing rain -Anyone trailering a race car (drag, rally, lemons, hillclimb, whatever) gets an atuomatic, three-finger rocker horn, arm fully up in the air wave

On the topic of things that make people around you uncomfortable: my local area has groups of people riding around on unplated dirt bikes, especially in spring. I mostly don't care, but having bikes without lights out at night getting up to hooligan stuff in traffic always feels pretty sketchy. 😅. Maybe get a set of bicycle lights or something before busting a wheely while running a red light at 10:00 at night on a Friday.

Just my opinion on what a Real Motorcyclist is. There are levels, label them what you want to from novice to avid/pro or whatever. But there are a few requirements and indeed exceptions to those requirements. These are my requirements: 1. Own and ride a motorcycle (even just seasonally), or did own one for a good while but still maintain an enthusiasm. 2. Be able to operate/drive a motorcycle (if physically able). This is basically for those who own a motorcycle with their partner and is usually a passenger. I won't call you a motorcyclist even if you spend all day on one, if you don't know how to drive one. But if you know how to but choose to be a passenger and ride across the country I will concede that you are more of a motorcyclist than I am, even if I'm a more skilled rider. 3. If you are legally required and able to have a license, you need to have or had one. If you fit the requirements above but don't bother to get a license, to me, demonstrates a lack of dedication to motorcycling and you don't deserve to be called a "Real Motorcyclist." That's all I can think of, and like I said there are exceptions.

I think anyone who has motorcycles as a part of their life is a motorcyclist, even the people many would call 'posers'. You have a full spectrum of motorcycle enthusiasts. Some may be collectors and not even ride, but I would still say they're motorcyclists. I own 2 bikes and put between 10-15k miles on my bikes per year, but I don't think I, nor anyone else, has a place to declare themselves as truer motorcyclists than others. It's just about having a passion for the two wheeled machines we all love, whatever form that takes.
@airtylerb

First and fore most if you love bikes then your a motorcyclist. As far as equipment goes, so long as you have to operate the machine in a horse riding position with a throttle, you are a motorcyclist riding a motorcycle. This includes those on can ams, traditional trikes, even the kids strapping lawn mower engines to their bikes. (been there and loved it)

It does get into you, and stay there. I grew up riding and racing motocross from when I was on a little 50cc. When I turned 16 and got a car I willingly gave it up, but I was always still into bikes and stuff. I didn't have another motorcycle until I was 40 years old. I inherited a Heritage Classic from my father in law. I was always a Harley hater. Dirt bike guy, sport bike fan, shred, go fast. But I didn't have to think for a second. F yeah I'll take your bike Glenn. And F yeah I enjoy riding it. It's not exactly to my taste, I'm not a chrome and studded leather dude, but shit, its a bike and I'm riding it. It's fantastic.

As far as prior motorcyclists goes I think it depends on the mindset. If you suffer an injury/age and are still interested in motorcycles then you are still a motorcyclist. I know a guy who bought a new Sportster back in '94, put 1200 miles on it and parked it in his garage. He has no interest it bikes and no interest in ever taking it up again. He wont sell the bike for some reason, but I would not consider him a motorcyclist at all. My Dad had a bike when he was 18/19. He rode for 3 months and sold it, and never had any interest in riding again. He is not a motorcyclist.

The problem is that you are trying to identify what a motorcyclist is without defining the machine. There are 3 basic machines that have come up Moped: 2 wheels, engine, pedals, straddled. Scooter: 2 wheels, engine, no pedals, 'perched' seating. Motorcycle: 2 wheels, engine, no pedals, straddled.Once the machine is defined you can then define the rider. If done this way the passenger on a scooter is not a motorcyclist because they straddle. The pillion on a motorcycle could then be considered a motorcyclist because of the riding style. As for a trike, the control position is a straddled position so it is a motorcycle. The same process can be used where 4 wheels are involved but the closest you find as a cross-over would be a mobility scooter: 4 wheels, engine, no pedals, 'perched' seating.Sorry, but I've seen this conversation many times so have had a long time to think about it. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents for the 'heal' of it.

Old podcast but I’d say motorcycling is a bug. You either get bit or you don’t. Perfect example is that I kinda talked a buddy of mine into getting a grom. He bought it, and rides it occasionally, but he more or less looks at it the same way he does his electric bicycle. It’s fun for him to bop around the neighborhood, but he has zero desire to get his MSF or travel on roads, zero desire to get a dirt bike or a full size bike, and dropping it/having an accident is enough to keep him off of it for 3-6 months. I would say he’s not a motorcyclist, he’s just a dude who owns a mini-moto. Motorcycling is a passion. The first time I ever got on one within 10 minutes I wrecked it and tore up my clothes/got road rash. I picked the bike and immediately thought to myself “I gotta get one of these”. THATS the bug. Unless I’ve been seriously injured, accidents don’t deter me, I just assess what I did wrong and keep going. I’m always thinking about when I’ll get to ride next.

I think first up you have to identify where motorised pushbikes end and motorcycles begin. In New Zealand we don't have number plates on ebikes mobility scooters or electric scooters not intended for use on the public road. Motor-scooters with a 50cc or less motor have to have plates and be registered to be used on the road, even though they can be ridden on a car licence, and don't need to go through the road worthiness inspections, (both of which is crazy). Anything bigger than 50cc requires a motorcycle licence. You can argue for of against inclusion of the less than 50cc machines, but I give them all the courtesy of a wave when it is safe to do so, they are two wheel bros. Interestingly some Can-Am are registered as bikes other as cars.

I own a Vespa 300, a SYM Fiddle III 200i, a Suzuki SV650, a Kawasaki Vulcan, and a Nissan Xterra. All my two wheel vehicles are freeway legal and require a motorcycle license and registration in my state. But the Vespa and SYM are scooters (which I love), the SV650 and Vulcan are motorcycles, and the Xterra is an automobile. I love all of them, each for a different reason. The need to impose labels has less to do with the type of vehicle than the pigeon holes in the heads in the describer.

It's an automatic motorcycle. Mopeds did not need any paperwork in the 80's. In the 70's we had Taco, Arctic Cat, Rupp etc. And that is when we started riding. If you are twisting a throttle it's a motorcycle. If they learn on a slingshot it's only a matter of time till they are called to two wheels.
