At the Australian Bat Clinic they are often busy rehabilitating flying foxes, but recently they had a rare bat species come into care, Patrick the ghost bat (Macroderma gigas).
Patrick sustained some friction burns in the wild, which led to his temporary incapacitation.
Ghost bats are Australia's only carnivorous species, so Patrick recovered on a diet of mealworms, crickets, moths and frozen mice warmed up to body temperature.
Ghost bats are a vulnerable species, native to Australia that are often found inhabiting old mine tunnels, caves and rock crevices. A highly intelligent species, Patrick was a very alert bat while in care and was always observing or listening to activity nearby. He would often call out to his primary carer, Trish when he was seeking attention.
When it was time for Patrick to be released, Trish made the journey to his roost in a north Queensland cave, where Patrick happily rejoined his small family group.

I hate how bats get the bad rap. You guys are doing a wonderful job to dispel the horrible myths. The carnivorous ones are so important in the wild to keep the bug population down and even actual vampire bats are not horrible creatures. I watched a documentary about them and they're not vicious or anything. Whenever I see a bat in the wild I just think of them as the birds of the night (even though I'm well aware they're mammals :D). Seeing them together at night around lamp posts is the most majestic thing to witness.

V.E. Gray Yeah, I was just watching an old Super Friends cartoon, and there was this terribly written episode about Dracula taking over entire communities in Transylvania, and sure enough, they showed these exaggeratedly scary images of bats. I remember watching those shows as a kid, as well as many other shows and movies that present bats as scary, possibly evil, and highly dangerous 'creatures'. Maybe they should balance that stuff out by producing shows that present bats as they really are.

Leopard boy But zoologists don't study bats, they study zoos. When I grow up, I want to become a meteorologist, so I can study meteors. But I really like weather forecasting, so I think I'll become a weatherologist instead! Lol

Flying fox bats seem to get the most videos, I think because people find them cuter (they look like cats or dogs with wings). But I love to see other bats, patrick is so cute!

I have not found a bat yet that I did not want to cuddle lol, these are such amazing and beautiful little creatures. I am so happy that I was able to adopt/sponcer an adorable little guy named Lil Drac a short tailed fruit bat at a sanctuary in texas. This is an awesome video I am glad to see people out there standing up for these little angels

Ghost bats are definitely my favourite subspecies of bat. I love their pallid pelts, their eyes, their ears...everything about them, really.

+Wendy Goutierez They're super rare to get into care so I was really excited to see him as well. They're called Ghost Bats because when the light is behind them, they can appear semi transparent. Cool huh?

I love all bats! They're incredibly intelligent, and it seems like the carnivorous ones are more social. Vampire bats actually share their meals with perchmates that couldn't find a meal.

I've always had an interest and love for bats. In all honesty, Patrick looks like a long-nosed bunny with wings! Think about it; the long-nosed bats of Sagaro Desert, mixed with a long-eared bunny with wings = Adorable! ^^

I am currently studying at Macquarie University and find nature even more fascinating. However, bats are just something I cannot tolerate. I know they are not out to get me I just am scared of them like I am spiders and most insects. Sir David is terrified of rats. Everyone is different. I do agree that tv and movies don't help though.

You should visit a bat rescue centre and meet a few face to face. After you spend some time with them and the people that work with them, it really helps you appreciate them. They're super smart and quite charming when you get to know the little guys :)

I love how they get scarier looking the smaller they get. The bats we have here look very satanic up close but they're tiny and harmless to everything except small bugs.

Aww, Patrick is adorable! No way would I be afraid. I've encountered a few brown bats at Fort Delaware (Delaware City, DE). When I entered one of the rooms, they came off of the wall, flew around the room a bunch of times and we nt back on the wall. I just laughed the entire time.

I love bats of all shapes and sizes. There are only three species of blood-sucking bats as far as I know and they don't have a taste for any human blood and only need about a teaspoon of blood for the day. Yeah, _real_ scary.

He's sooooo cute !!! Nope not afraid of bats, never have been, even though one flew over right on top of my head and snagged some of my hair lol It was a dark early morning in Germany and they'd live in ppl's barns, so it most likely was flying low to get to the barn before it became light outside and messed up my nicely brushed hair a bit lol 😆 Other kids were screaming, but I thought it was funny 😄 We lived in a small farmers village in Germany and our farmers appreciated the bats and therefore gave them a nice dark roof home in their barns. Granny used to always tell us not to play in the barn, cause she wanted the bats to sleep peacefully through the day. But I didn't know that fruit bats exist and since I always thought of bats as cute, there was nothing but straight love when I saw their cute faces 😍 BATS ARE AWESOME 👌

A lot of people think that bats are type of flying rodent, but they're not. The are in the order Chiroptera, which are close related to lemurs, who also have common ancestors with humans. So in that respect, bats are closer to humans than rodents. They are quite intelligent and have very complex brains I think bats are fascinating - not scary.

Patrick: MEAL WORMS! OMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM!!! Bats are one of my very favourite animals. I first became intrigued by them one night while I was in the rose garden where I was living. I saw what looked like a dark bird against the twilight backdrop and then it swooped over to me, flew around my head a couple of times, then flew away. Since then I've always loved bats.

i have helped rescue a baby bat before, was careful not to touch him. his mother had died but the baby was still doing well. since then, I have a real respect for them

Im not afraid any animal, and I dont even care if I get hurt or sick if I need to help them, I just approach with caution and use good judgement. I will help any animal in need. I once rescued a mouse out of my pool and got bit for the thank you, lol.

Bats are awesome. All kinds - vampire bats (feed off of CATTLE, not people!), fruit bats - all of the different species are so cool! I wish people weren't so afraid of them.

If it were possible, I would get a giant fruit bat for a pet, hands down. I wouldn't mind this kind either, I like his gigantic ears. He'd be a little harder to feed, because I'd have to go to a pet shop for food, rather than just buy extra fruit while I buy my own food.

Fun fact! Ancient Greeks associated bats with the goddess of the Underworld, Persephone. They also associated deer with her. Compared to the other goddesses, she was very sweet. She was a goddess of spring, of life, reincarnation, and the wife of Hades.

I used to be afraid of bats. Of course, I used to be afraid of a lot of things that I don't fear now. Part of my fear came from my mom, who was superstitious & worried about everything. As time goes on, I fear less & less. Ignorance also causes fear. I had no idea there were so many different species of bat, that they are not rodents, that they are the only mammals that fly, that they eat all kinds of different foods (insects, nectar, fruit, etc.), and that they are so important for pest control, pollination, & seed dispersal. I also have grown more compassionate as I've gotten older, esp. for creatures that are misunderstood or have gotten a bad reputation b/c of works of fiction ("Jaws"), prejudice, folklore, and sweeping generalizations (bats, sharks, bears, spiders). Ironically, some of the animals we fear the most are the most beneficial to humans! So now I love bats!! I love them b/c I didn't just continue in my ignorance. I took a little time to learn about them and discover what amazing animals they are!!

I desperately want to see bats in person now. After reading Kenneth Oppel's Silverwing, Sunwing and Firewing series, I fell in love with bats. I began to research False Vampire bats and found Flying Fox bats and fell in love. I would love to one day meet a bat in person.
