We were the adolescents of the 1990’s. We came of age when the internet was a baby. It was the “grunge” era, so we went to school every day wearing flannel shirts and jeans. We remember the OJ Simpson trial and President Clinton’s impeachment trial.

I don't like the 77-83 span, it's too early. Are they really saying someone born in January 1984 doesn't have any Gen X characteristics? Then again I'm from September '83 and I'm pissed off and bitter that people four fucking months younger than me are the cool hip generation and I'm not.

JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern “Generations” are very subjective and there are really no clear-cut boundries. (2 years ago, I has no idea that they even existed...except for the Boomers...which is based on concrete data such as birth rates). If you’re at the “cusp”, choose whoever you identify with.

No we are not. We grew up woth techno music, we were the first obes to use internet in school, had the computer in the home 8-15 years old, we playes video games but also outside. We had great cartoons, we read goosebump books came out in 1992, i was 12-13. 1978-1986 are the techno kids some us went to raves, listened to music called jungle, house music, dance, euro. Nothing loke the gen x from the 60s that are 5 years younger than my parents. I was born in 1979 but was also a baby in the 80s and a child of the 80s and 90s...late mid 90s a teen had all the top electronics and one of the first to have a cell in high school. Im basically a millennial!!! I became of ful age 2000 i was 20-21

I was born in 1982. I agree with this title as well. I definitely remember the times before cellphones and digital tech. I remember playing an Atari as a kid. My first console game was the regular Nintendo. We would always be outside making "forts" in the woods. We would go out and have rock and stick fights. I remember playing Oregon Trail on those old Apple computers with the black and green screens. You know the computers I'm talking about... The ones where the floppy disks actually really did flop when you shook them. I remember looking forward every Christmas to the Sears, Penny's, and Hills department store catalogs for toys. There were no cellphones, tablets, and iPods. I had a Walkman and remember having to always fix my cassette tapes because they would get chewed up. I remember staying at my grandmother's house and watching her black and white TV even. We had a color TV however it was a console. You remember those big old TVs that were encased in a wood enclosure. Whenever you wanted to change the channel you had to get up and go turn the knob. I remember having to use a typewriter to do book reports. Going to the library to get information for assignments. Having to use the card catalog system to find a book. I remember when everyone had a "just say no" and or "Book it" buttons. Reading those books so you could get your free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut for the "Book It" program. I remember every Christmas in grade school the Santa workshop would come and you would go and buy little ornaments or other things for your family. I had knee high socks with different colored stripes on them. I had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle lunch box and thermos. I also had several trapper keepers. It definitely was a very defined generation and time period. Just a couple of years older and you would have missed all of that. I would not change my childhood and early teen years for anything. Definitely a proud Xennial here.

Born at the very end of GenX and in the middle of the Xennial generation (1980). My first tv was black and white and without remote control. My first music was played from vinyl records and cassette tapes (CD's didn't exist). My first movies were from VHS tapes and we actually recorded things from TV that would otherwise be missed (same goes for radio btw)! Cellphones weren't even a thing, nor was texting and I knew about 30 phone numbers by heart! When we called a friend, we called their home and had to ask their parents to hand them the phone. I grew up watching cartoons like He-Man, Scooby-Doo, G.I. Joe, Transformers, ThunderCats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Pee-wee Herman Show and faithfully watched Star Trek the Next Generation every week with my father. But I was to old for things like Power Rangers and Pokemon! We were born into an entertainment golden age with great movies like Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, RoboCop, Terminator 2 and many many more amazing flicks! The Titanic was huge and as a young male I hated it, along with Backstreet Boys and the Hansons (but you went anyways, because the girls loved it). When it comes to music we heard all the great stuff from the 60s and 70s, because our parents listened to it all the time. While also getting all the great music from the 80s and 90s from MTV, when they actually played music! My generation witnessed the rebirth of the game industry, with the Nintendo Entertainment System, but was to young to comprehend it's fall (at the time at least), thanks Atari! We played in arcades and took part in the console wars between Sega and Nintendo, because Sega does what Ninten don't. We witnessed the birth of the internet and before that, some of us would take part in Lan-parties! Online reviews didn't exist yet, so we actually read books and magazines for information, or just to know what's on TV. Growing up, we actually used physical dictionaries and went to the library! We would rent movies and video games, or borrow them from friends and when someone didn't return what you borrowed them, you would immediately know they weren't to be trusted. Just like the generations before us, when we played outside as young children, it was true freedom! Because we were completely cut off from our parents, with no means of direct contact (unless we were playing at a friend's house). When we first started driving, GPS wasn't wide spread, nor did everyone have a cellphone yet. Life was an adventure and we actually learned how to use a map! During our first years of clubbing or bar hopping, smartphones didn't exist. You didn't have to be afraid of being recorded and social media wasn't really a thing until the mid 2000s. We witnessed major events like 9/11, both wars in Irak, the Challenger disaster, the Chernobyl disaster, the fall of the USSR and Berlin wall, the rise of China and if you lived in Europe, the implementation of the Euro as a new currency. In fact your first job would likely have been payed out in the 'old' currency! The Y2K bug was a laugh and along with both the millennials and the generations before us, we lived in times of optimism (when you thought the future would be better) and fealt the change creep in during the mid 2000s. Sufficely to say, things evolved very quickly during the 80s, 90s and 2000s, which is why it's been awesome to be part of the Xennial generation!

I'm 100% XENNIAL and very proud of that. I consider that we're blessed because we got the BEST of both worlds! We're still too young to be a X Generation but we're also too old to be a Millennial. We were born between 1976-1985 approximately and today we're around 34-42. We are the LAST GENERATION to be EDUCATED and RAISED with Old School traditional and strong VALUES. Maybe we're a very small generation but we're the most capable nowadays! We had a very innocent and funny childhood. We grew up in a world without Internet, playing on the street, with game boards, and enjoying the remains of the Old World form our parents. But we were also the FIRST GENERATION to welcome the new digital world, the cellphones, computers, video games, globalization...but we have ANALOGICAL roots. Some of us were "forced" to accept the new technologies and with the time we learn how to use them but some of us prefer some traditional habits and behaviors....we are more Conservatives than the Millennials. We RESPECT the authorities and our elders, we really know how to WORK and we know the importance of EDUCATION to succeed in life combined with values such as Tolerance, Compassion, Honesty and Perseverance. We like Technology but we DO NOT DEPEND ON IT....we watch the Internet only as a very useful TOOL but we like to do the things in the "Old Fashion Style"...at least I do! Some people of our Generation became "tech-addicts" but most if us prefer to practice sports, spend time with family, talk with our friends in person, go to the shopping malls...just simple things in life. We went to Libraries to do our homeworks, we were witnesses of important events like the 9/11/2001, the Millennium New Year 2000, the suicide of Kurt Cobain, the Globalization, the Bill Clinton sex scandal, the famous OJ Simpson car chase, 2PAC murder in 96...etc. We grew up surrounded by Excellent MUSIC and MOVIES thanks to our parents. We understand and value the EFFORT and how difficult this world is. Here in Mexico City where I am from....my childhood and adolescence was awesome, there were very good times. Globalization arrived to Mexico, the computers, the MTV, McDonalds in 1985, the Nokia and Motorola "brick" cellphones....and more! We know how to use the old TurnTables with vinyl records, Walkman, Discman, MP3 until Spotify. We are also a very, very nostalgic Generation....no matter the new movies and TV shows, Netflix series.....we always prefer the classics form the past. Friends, Beverly Hills 90210, Seinfield, The Simpsons, Knight Rider, McGywer, The A team, Miami Vice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina, The Fresh Prince, the Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Transformers, Home Improvement, Baywatch....and more great POP culture TV shows. We are very lucky to be the Generational Bridge between the X's and the Millennials. I liked your video and even we grew up in different countries...I think we agreed about this. Definitely we are XENNIALS. Greetings from Mexico City.

I remember learning how to use a typewriter and an analogue phone (the one where you spin to dial a phone number). I was in the 2nd grade when computers were introduced in school. First computer game I remember playing was like a mouse hunt game where you guided a mouse through a maze. There was also Where in the US is Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, and other games that were for educational purposes. Yet back then we still had like hour long recesses. I was a freshman in HS when the WWW was introduced to me when my HS got it. Those computers were in our library and I got my first email account through school instruction, and I still use that email to this day.

Falling right in the middle of that range, that is being born around half 1980, I definitely feel to be Xennial. I always hated to have to choose between one group ranging from the early 1960s and the other going all the way up to 2000s. That's a span of 40 years and you can imagine how much people and the world changed during that time. It's nice to have our tiny spot finally, I feel comfy there. What I find the most significant is our teenage transition from the purely analog world to the digital one. We got on that train just in time not to lag almost at all while we still have the memory of being able to function perfectly normally without the Internet or mobile phones. We may even have been the last generation to have a "normal" childhood. Anyone much younger didn't really get that purely analog world experience and vice versa the older ones seem to have a handicap in the digital department. I always felt that Xennials are a somewhat lost, or confused generation. So much, or rather too much was happening when we were growing up. And the fact that the fall of communism also happened in our formative years only added to the mess. I had even the bonus of being in one of those former communist countries, so add the cultural and economic shock to the mix.

Awesome perspective, I was born in 81 and I think being the generation that transitioned from analog to digital worlds is an overlooked reality. In a way, I feel like this makes us able to still exist somewhere in the middle of those two frames of reality. It is almost like some form of a superpower. I honestly wouldn’t exchange the time we grew up in for anything.

@@merkaba1 I say hi to a fellow Xennial. In a matter of approx. 10 years, I transitioned from having no home phone line at all, when you had to go to the post office phone booth to make a phone call, to a rotary dial, later push-button, then an analogue mobile phone with no texting, and finally I got a digital GSM one. All in my most formative years. Likewise, I started with no internet experience at all, then local LAN, BBS, dial-up connection and finally cable. All in a matter of approx five years. Everything changed so rapidly in the 90s in the former commie bloc. Take music, for instance, I started with vinyl records, then I got all sorts of tapes, then CDs, and before you knew it I was sharing music through Napster using a college optical line. Again, all in a matter of approx. ten years. Hard to say it's a superpower. Rather a unique experience to have been exposed to so many different concepts while growing up in such a short time. I just feel like I can relate to both worlds. I dare say I'm almost both a digital and analogue native.

@dcarriere1890 6 лет назад
They really didn't though. If you're an 85er, as an example, you'd have been 5 years old during the first Iraq war. How much of that do you really remember? Were you able to comprehend why it was so different from any other conflict beforehand? (Hint, it has to do with the birth of 24 hour news) The early 90s, the bright colors, tie dyed shirt (not hippy style, 90s), the Fresh Prince rapping (before the millennium).. and more. You'd have been 5, too young to see it, or understand it. A 7 year old is vastly more aware of the world at that point, and so is better equipped to understand it all. Of course, not all 5 year olds, or 7 year olds are built equally... so it's entirely possible to have a mature 5 year old and an immature 7 year old... but overall, the dates do make sense. Here, maybe this is helpful? In what method are you most comfortable reaching out to communicate with a friend?

Had internet in school and it was a big deal. Being born in 1980 I always felt I was in between two generations. My older brother was born in 1978 and we both identify ourselves more so as genXers. On the other hand my baby brother was born in 1984 and he sort of reminds me of an older millennial maybe because he's more tech savvy than I. It makes more sense to me being identified as a Xennial because I could identify with both sides. Tech for me started out with atari, nintendo, Oregon trail and ended with ps2. Music went from my cd walkman to cd discman, then to apple ipod and now all music is on my new Galaxy S9+. So I guess I've been through all the tech stages. However, this idea of having cellphones classrooms still seems crazy to me.

I think the 6 year period between 1984-1989 should also be included for the Xennials. Since the age range of people born in those years are 35-30 which can also identify with being the generation to still use analog technology in the 90s until the rise of the internet, cell phones, Myspace and Facebook. I remember playing games like Oregon Trail, and Number Mucncher. Also we grew up watching first run episodes of shows like Full House, Married with Children, Boy Meets World, Super Mario Super Show/Bros 3 and World, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Friends, Martin, Step by Step. We still had Saturday morning cartoons on network tv and the craze of the original Power Rangers, TMNT, Pokemon. We also can remember significant events in our youth such as Kurt Cobain's suicide, Princess Diana's fatal car accident where her funeral was aired on damn near every TV channel which overtook Saturday morning cartoons that weekend, the murders or 2Pac and Biggie in the midst of the east vs West coast rap war, and 9/11 which not only ended America's innocence but our youth since I was a freshman in high school when it happened. Then digital technology was in full swing shortly after that. I didn't get high speed broadband internet till around 2004-05 (I know a bit late by that point) and I didn't get a brick gameboy green screen Nokia phone cellphone till I was a jr in hs.I know I'm just rambling about my childhood/teen years but my point is that us mid-late 80s babies can also identify with the older Xennials of 1977-1983.

Ya all gotta wrong that’s Gen X generation (1965-1986) Millennials are in between 1987-2003, there’s are 3 different type of kind of Millennials if you are born between 1987-1993 you are a Xennials as the older/elder Millennials and if you born between 1994-1998 your the middle age Millennials and if you born in between 1999-2003 you are a Zennials it’s mean your the mixture of Millennials & Gen Z in you but you are more Millennial than Gen Z but still Gen Y. That’s the right correct years of those generations. Some people get confused of they generations where they belong, it’s the same with astrology who you compatible with and what’s your personality like based on your zodiac sign.

Anyone born in the 70's would have had mixed tapes, known New Kids on the Block, and recognize America OnLine (especially with all those free discs in the mail). However, until 1978, those born in the 70's would all have reached their 20's, graduated college (unless held back for whatever reason), and entered the workforce by 1999, pre-Y2K, you know this "millennial" thing. Someone born in 1977 who graduates in 1999, and is at work hearing about 9/11 from coworkers is suddenly in the same demographic as those college kids who cut class to watch it on television? Or, how about the fact that those born in 1977 were also old enough to vote for Clinton in 1996, their first Presidential election, which is the same as those born in 1974 (who missed being old enough to vote in 1992)? So, according to these, someone born in 1974 would also be a Xennial. They fit the same thing those born in 1977 do. I guess Xennials should really be 1974 to 1983?
@Mr.JoeBangles

I agree whole heatedly with the article. I'm a true GenX and I've noticed that friends born after 1976 seem to have different ideals and ethics. I can renovate a house, while they can only change a toilet or faucet. I get mad because someone didn't do their job and they only get frustrated. I can rebuild and engine, they can struggle through changing their oil or changing an air filter. They have more drive than millennials, but not as much as the hard core Xer's. Have a friend born in 1981 and for years, I've been telling him he is a millennial, not GenX, no matter what year he was born in. This new term fits him to a "T". He's somewhat capable and spends too much of his time texting and accomplishing nothing he'll knuckle down and get work done if forced, but sometimes loses focus and ends up doing something else. If I yell, he reacts by getting back to work, not coming up with reasons, why it isn't his fault that the work isn't done. BTW, if he worked for me, I'd still fire him. Nothing makes me happier than a business of all Xer's. We use all the technology available AND have focus and no excuses. I belong to such a group and what pleasure it is. We break up a task and assign the parts to the most efficient candidates for each part. We return to a meeting with all of the parts complete and then reassemble the completed task. If need be, you can contact the group to make sure your work will integrate well, but by no means will I spend the entire time asking for guidance. At least know I can stop calling people millennials who aren't really.

Xennials/MTV Generation/Nintendo Generation/Cuspers has been a concept since about 1990. Basically, anyone who grew up on Super Mario Bros and Music TV hitting adolescence around the Shoegaze/grunge/R&B era. We were on the verge of our teenage years between around the times of the NWA breakup and feud, Kurt Cobain's death, and the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. When the Internet became a major thing in the mid to late 90s, we probably made up about 85% of the population. IRC and ICQ (or AOL for Americans) were our preferred choice of communication - just missing out on that generation (X) that spent 18 hours a day on the phone.

umm what about 1984? I grew up without the internet for the most part, no cellphones. In high school people had pagers and that was considered a fancy technology. We made mix tapes, I remember playing them in my first car. I remember new kids on the the block and Oregon Trail and the introduction of the internet. We remember answering phones and not knowing who was on the other line first. We remember playing outside all day with our friends and no social media. Why I keep getting lumped into the same catagory as millenials I will never know. They are clearly from a different world than we are. I almost think anyone born in the 80's is a gen x and xennial combination.
