My Mom and I did the same. PBS, I think it was on Saturday evening? We couldn't wait to watch every episode!!!! That, and Absolutely Fabulous!! I miss her so, coming up on 3 yrs since she pasted from dementia. Watching these shows makes me a bit warm and fuzzy.😞
My father would watch on PBS on most evenings. I would eventually learn to enjoy them with him. Although it would air on PBS (WLIW/21) here on Long Island, each episode would end with the tag “Lionheart Television - The BBC in America.” He enjoyed this series; and also ‘Allo! Allo!’ I couldn’t watch that with him; the opening and closing music always made me cry…
My dear late parents loved this show...I can still hear them laughing whenever I watch these hilarious shows! My Mom really loved this toy department episode🥰❤
“Well done Mr Grainger And if you work really hard for 20-30 years, you’ll earn what you did 5 minutes ago”. First time I heard that I collapsed with laughter. It’s still funny
"TODDLER'S WEAR" was classic. And Mr. Grainger and Young Mr. Grace playing with the trains is further proof men don't grow up, we just get more expensive toys.
My husband was stationed in England (two tours) and we would watch this and a few other shows. We were glad seeing them on PBS for a long time. So sad that they have decided to take all the great classics off.
One of my favorite episodes if only because of the ending, the sweetness of mutual understanding between Mr Grace and Mr Grainger, and the seemingly authentic smile of Miss Bakewell
Annette Evans I read an article about how for the early seasons she actually dyed her real hair those different colours for each episode. They had to bleach it out and re-dye it before filming the next episode. Eventually they switched her to wigs, but I can't believe she originally went to all that work!
Good old fashioned humor that makes you smile and catches you totally off guard.... I wish there were shows on like this now.... As a humanity We have become to serious, to absorbed in the complexities of life.... When I watch this it's like taking 30 years off my life.... I'm young again....
They wore a lot of wigs back then, and people actually mixed the styles and colors up a lot. Now the trend is back. There is nothing new under the sun.
@Carl Ward Mr Humphries was gay in real life. A wonderful man and actor. He left all his money to his husband. Look it up on Google. Definitely true. I’m more concerned why he didn’t take care of his teeth. Is that a British custom to have horrible teeth?🌈🌈🌈🌈
@@marilyncfriedman2356 There’s nothing wrong with his teeth. He has a gap in between the front teeth that is not uncommon and is genetic. They aren’t bleached blinding white like modern Americans tend to do.
13:41 - Mrs. Slocombe: "But they're all dogs. Isn't there a demand for mechanical pussies?" Captain Peacock: "I've been told that people prefer the real thing."
As a kid I used to watxh this show on PBS with my dadin the 90s. Other than This Old House this was our thing. He's gone now but watching this still brings back memories
Mr. Grainger reminds me of my grandfather. Even in his 70s he was a kid at heart and even loved electric trains. He had a huge train layout in his basement. He passed away at 86 years old. I still miss him a lot even though he passed in 1996.
@doctorwho0077 That is called humour . But since you asked, I'm actually a former MD . I studied at the university of medicine of Copenhagen and then Oxford . Former , because after 5 years working for the UN i went back to med school and became a vet and ethologist . Still working for the UN , but for the WAP this time (That's world animal protection) on animalitarian missions , while running a clinic with my partner and a few animal shelters . I am however still registered as a licensed MD and veterinarian at the GMC , just not a practicing MD anymore, although nothing forbids me to or prevents me from starting a new practice if I do wish to.
It's been 8 months since I needed an 'Are You Being Served' fix, just needed one again! Great show. See you all next Christmas season. *MERRY CHRISTMAS!*
Indeed, my aunt on my mother's side of the family introduced me to Are you Being Served via reruns on PBS in the 1990's. It is such a joy to see this show again, especially since a lot of the jokes went right over my head since I was only a boy when I first watched them.
Whomever wrote and or directed this episode deserves the equivalent of an Emmy Award. One of the best written, acting and directed episodes of the entire run of this series..
It's "whoever". If you want to avoid sounding silly with the wrong usage of "whom" or "whomever", you'd be better off using "who" and "whoever" all the time regardless of their placement in the sentence.
@@deanronson6331 Who the 'F' cares? But obviously you cared enough to respond to someone you think is illiterate (twice), doesn't say much about you? Too much time on your hands... Get a life or go get laid.
@@deanronson6331 your being mean. Even if the wrong grammar is used, so what??? You going to do the same to me because of my intentional misuse of the word your/you're???? No one likes a grammar cop. We understand the person's context and don't need you to criticise. This is a great show and warm memories attached, don't ruin it for anyone!
I love when Mr. Humphries demonstrated the weebles. It was so cute! I would have loved to work in a real store with them. In the US they were advertised as Weebles, they wobble but they don't fall down. Lol
The last was Nicholas Smith, ole jug ears, died in his 90s 2015. Before him was Frank Thornton, also in his 90s. In 2009, I think Wendy Richard was the fourth to pass away. Arthur Brough was the first in 1978, then Harold Bennett in 1982, then Arthur English in 1995. After that the rest one by one. Molly Sugden, John Inman, then Trevor Bannister.
This show is like a hug from jesus,,was here sep 2019 at lowest of my life now march 17th 2020 and world in carnage of covid 19,,,,hope ye all well people,
Here again in 2024 and found that all that was the flu and lies from the pit of hades. While people who took the v are dying suddenly. May God have mercy on us all. Don't get mad, learn from the past.
"Young" Mr. Grace would be 123 years old, were he alive today. He was 79 when he made this episode (1978). He was born when Queen Victoria was still alive. All of the actors are now playing to a higher, more ethereal audience.
About 20 years ago I got the 8 VHS box set and the version of this episode on VHS was edited to remove the “Annie the Air Hostess” segment entirely. I watched those tapes until I memorized practically every episode. So interesting to see this RU-vid version with the extra material.
I have the dvd boxed set including the specials, and the movie as well. But the movie isn't as funny as the series. Basically the same jokes in another context but missing the original flare.
I still binge watch this along with The Vicar of Dibley and Let Them Eat Cake every night 😂 (sleep disorder with my cancer - I have it, it doesn’t have me!) British comedy is the best!
I had to watch “German Week” a couple of years ago while I was touring Germany. I think it was the first episode I saw of this show. They all did very well! :)
I never tire of Mollie Sugden. Still watch "That's My Boy!" on VHS. I also enjoy seeing Paul Inman in "Take a letter, Mr. Jones," also on VHS. It is interesting to study how the actor you love from one character shows up as someone else. Their personal little quirks and mannerisms make regular appearances and you'd know them anywhere!!
I just love Mr. Humphries!!! He’s hilarious 🤣 and so endearing!!! This episode is so funny 😂 especially the dog 🐶 sniffing the other’s bum!!! Lmao 🤣🤣 I had a Daisy the Dachshund when I was little!!!
No mention is made of Captain Peacock having worked in the Toy Department before. In Dear Sexy Knickers, Mr. Rumbold threatened to send him back to "Toys and Games with all those children."
My Mum still accuses me of 'creating' even now. It's wonderful how much they say without actually saying it. Like the spending a penny joke, wonderful. Them was the days.
KRIS, thank you so much for posting all these Are You Being Served videos...it is Jan.2020 and quite a depressing period in American history. This series has brought alot of laughter back into my life and I'm sure many others. Much appreciated.
Me too! Exact same. And I remember Sindy. (Barbie knock off) You don't see her but her packaging is seen in the background. Pink, yellow stripe and black heart. I didn't have one because I thought she was ugly, but I remember seeing her in toy stores.
