TMH disciplines those whom He loves and chastises every son He receives (Hebrews 12:6) you are right it is not a punishment, but an act of love and guidance, just as we would our own children. He also requires a broken and a contrite heart (Psalms 51:17) which means that we have to be brought to a place of total surrender, because TMH deserves ALL of the glory and honour.
