If you know my message at all, it’s that players need training with skill enhancement trainers AND they need training with game situational trainers.
-
So I’m not bashing any type of training.
-
With that said, I find it odd that there’s a selection of game situational trainers that carry the message that players need more of what they happen to offer, and less of what they call “drill” work.
-
Some will even say they don’t need skill training at all.
-
Besides the obvious agenda there, let’s just cut to the chase.
-
Many of these trainers don’t have a clue what a skill looks like. You know why they say things like bones over cones? Because they view skill as being good at drills.
-
Drills aren’t skill. Drills are a method by which skill can be tested, honed, and evaluated.
-
There are a lot of players who are good at drills, because they naturally have figured out fake skill shortcuts.
-
The trainer/coach sees that they are good at the drill, without noticing the game flaws of the skills being performed, and then assumes that they simply need more reads.
-
And it’s not that reads won’t help, but if the skill-side isn’t addressed, then the lack of real skills can still limit their game performance.
-
That’s why I call them “fake-a-coach skilled”. That’s not bashing coaches either, because I know how complex and detailed it is to truly know how to separate game skill from counterfeit skill.
-
I don’t expect all coaches to be able to do that at a high level; I just hope they can eventually understand that they don’t know that aspect of development at a high level, and either seek to learn it, or find those who do it well!
