We all have our lazy moments, but this was some good stuff to think about. I'm a strong believer in "all hobby is good hobby", even if that's just staring at miniatures happily while thinking about colour schemes 🤣

I am a very slow painter.. I mean really. I got a little stressed at one point about how slow I was and how few minis I could paint within a year.. Until I realized that it was ok because I preferred the process of painting more than filling the cabinet of painted minis. I get a rush when I do. But I do love to sit at my painting desk and watch a youtube / twitch video at the same time. Sometime I stop painting to watch something interesting or do something else.. And it is ok to "be lazy" or I'd rather say "being less effective" than when I am at work.. coz this is not work it's a hobby.

Same here, in 2020 I painted maybe about 15 mini's even with a regular couple of hours of painting per week. I find enjoyment in painting as best as I can, even with just regular troops. In the last years all that work has added up and now I'm proud to have a really nice looking army!

@Uncle Atom For what it's worth, I have been following your YTChannel now for well over a year. During a real dark time in my life I discovered your channel and your no-nonsense approach to hobbying re-ignighted a spark in me for my love of wargaming, hobbying in general and has even (helped) in my being able to look at minis I paint and not completely hate them. So I went from being on the brink of suicide to the point of striving to be one of the better players and opponents in my local area, and trying to bring new players into the hobby and build an even stronger community than we have now in my local game store. A very close friend of mine even has mentioned several times that I should start a channel of my own in the vein of what you do. I'm looking into it. I appreciate you, your your tube, and your dedication to us, the players more than you can ever know. I even for the first time ever bought a t-shirt from any youtube person to show my support not with just words, but with doll-hairs too. I wanted it to be your merch. Keep up the good work you do for all us

My kind of "lazy" is to collapse on my couch after a day in the office, renovating my house and finally putting my three kids to bed. Maggotkin of Nurgle, you have to wait. Necromunda Dark Uprising, shhhhh, the time will come.

@@sarahhillary7698 Hi Sarah, it's one of these sets where you're just "wow". It's huge - because it's somewhat of a complete game. It's pricey, yes. But from my understanding it's so expensive because you're really getting a lot. It's not just a "prestige model". It's really a whole lot of things. Two complete gangs, a hell lot of terrain, dice, markers and a rule book. Yes, we always have to be aware that we need to paint these as well - so that's on top price wise. If you are getting into Necromunda, I think it's a good set. You get all you need to really getting started. It also will consume your time. Hope I could help. Have a good one

I think “burnout” is another substitute for “lazy,” and often times in my case is the more accurate term. When you work on an army for long enough and you’re making everything very uniform in color, it gets monotonous. If your passion for the lore and your enthusiasm for what you’re painting is fading, that’s burnout creeping on you.

Thank you for this perspective on laziness. I am constantly busy with either work, maintaining personal relationships, exercise and hobby time. Most of the self-imposed critique of being lazy comes from not spending time doing something that has a visible or tangible result, ie: painting or grass cutting, whereas a lot of other activities are immeasurable, ie: how much impact does spending a few hours a day with my spouse add to our relationship. Part of my problem, and maybe the same for others, is that we too easily get drawn into new exciting activities and commitments. This often means we have too little time to really get good at or see meaningful results in any one area or interest. In the same way your house can get cluttered with too much stuff, your life can get cluttered with too many commitments, relationships and hobbies. My goal is to try and reduce all these things to allow for more time to focus on those that remain.

I ain't lazy, I was just born tired! Seriously though, I tend to beat myself up " for being lazy" not getting " enough done" Then one of my buddies will drop by and see what I've been working on and they're always amazed how many projects I work on concurrently. I jump around between stuff for variety and to keep the motivation up. When I don't work on miniatures for gaming, I often work on other hobbies, historical models, music, drawing or painting. So, I guess in some people's eyes ,I'm lazy because I couldn't give a fig about the lawn, but I know they don't see hours and hours spent I spend at these hobbies, and the value I get out of it. Excellent topic for discussion, as always, thanks Atom!

Lazy for me is when you do stuff you really don't care about but do it anyways for the quick fix. Happens to me a lot, like RU-vid, reddit etc. It stops me from doing things that I know for sure makes me happier. But then again, sometimes you just want to have a lazy sunday and actually do nothing. But then the quick fixes shouldn't be the major part of it. It's way better to just chill in the sun and let your brain recover/relax. Great topic!

Thanks for the sound encouragement. As someone who is in the hobby for d&d purposes, I was crushed by the pandemic, and questioning my motivation for the hobby since I halted my projects. But that being said... I had to learn how to DM on Fantasy Grounds. Not only that, I had to learn how to do so with a non-Forgotten Realms world. I don't think I'll ever DM again without a laptop running Fantasy Grounds rather than rifling through papers, and I learned that online battlemaps, that you can find on Reddit and Pinterest and such, can be an inspiration for when we decide it's safe enough to play face to face again

I sometimes fall into the trap of looking at number-of-models painted/assembled as the main measure of progress and discount as laziness the work I do if my hobby time is spent with jobs that only make small (but important!) differences, like neatening things up or getting details right. It's only looking back after some time has passed that I really appreciate the outcome of the work that went into something.

I have a full time job that is very physical and often work OT. I also have been a gamer for most of my life and I'm huge into film (really obscure stuff) and I love music and unfortunately the only thing I can do while also painting minis is listening to music. So time division is a nightmare for me. I always feel like I'm not devoting enough time to my interests. Painting is relaxing but it's straight up work and often I don't have the energy after my actual work to paint.

This is why it's not a bad thing to have several hobbies-- ...so that when you get bored/burned out/tired of one, you can transition to another... Then, after a while (sometimes a *long* while), you're refreshed, re-energised, idea-inspired, *time enhanced* to come back to the first one... It's also not a bad thing to tell the neighbors to "screw off," every now and then (if they're like yours)-- I *use* to have some like that. Refreshes the soul. Btw, I actually pay my neighbors to mow my lawn-- so I can have more time for my hobbies... problem solved! 🖒😎

Absolutely! I rotate between painting minis, playing video games, playing Magic the Gathering, reading books, etc. I might go one or two months without painting a single mini, but when I do feel that urge coming, I might paint every day for several weeks. I'm very lucky that I have the funds and free time to support so many awesome hobbies and the variety keeps me from burning out on any given one. Oh, and I also pay someone to mow my lawn because it's one of the lowest things on my list of priorities. I consider myself lucky to be able to do that as well.

Most of the time I never complete a hobby, like paint a model or assemble is sometimes it would be a kitbash conversion where I'm building models for a certain army and I may not have the certain bits I need to finish it before I prime undercoat it. Same thing with painting, when I first started the hobby I didn't have the specific paint colour to paint certain parts of the model or I needed to come up with a colour scheme I want to use on the model. The other reasons are some of the things you've mentioned. Health is also another reason, I need to take time away from using the glues and spray paints because of the vapours from the spray. To me, it's not that lazy unless if you are not doing other important stuff to care for yourself and others around you.

It's taken me years to figure out what I actually enjoy, regardless of any hobby. That's time spent hanging out and talking with my hobby friends. Whether I actually play a game, craft or paint doesn't matter. I'm just as content talking and exchanging ideas with likeminded individuals. Once I figured this out, not only did my relationships change with all my wargaming friends (I've become very careful about what kind of campaigns I'll join) but my buying habits changed for the better as well. Now, if I don't get anything painted up, it doesn't really bother me much anymore. If I do paint something, it's because I'm highly motivated too. Either because of a game coming up or just in the mood due to the model. And now I finally enjoy putting the finishing touches on a model. Before I realized this, painting miniatures was cutting the grass. It was something that had to be done and I was too cheap to pay someone else to do it. While I don't get much done year to year, what I actually do get finished with I enjoy doing. And that's really the whole point about a hobby. If you're not enjoying the time spent doing it, you're better off getting another job.

I see myself as not lazy but very busy. My day only has 24h (if your day has more hours and you live on earth, please tell me how you achieved that) and i work full time 9-10h a day - even more if im in the office (and not in Home-Office) due to commuting. And i need to sleep as well. I dont have only wargaming as my hobby... it is A hobby - and thats important - its not my job so im not forced to do anything. Ramble: (Sorry, and thanks if you read trough it!) I get like 3-4h a day for hobby stuff, and if i decide to play videogames, i do that - if i decide to watch Netflix or whatever - i do that. Im also into photography and i see the same "issue" there. I take tonns of photos (compare to assembling models) but actually going trough them and edit the "good ones" (painting) is done sometimes months after (unless i do it for other people, like a party shoot op) i took them. Why? Because i only have 3-4h of free time and i like to spend my time with what i like to do in that specific moment. It doesnt help that my weekends are (exept covid lol) rather busy without much influence by myself, things need doing, friends visiting, Beers drunk etc. Does it make me feel old and slow eventho im just a mid 30's guy ? Yes! I just found games i bought on a sale in boxed copy in 2014! And yes i feel like the world is turning faster than i can expirience it but i dont think im lazy. And i sometimes get that critique by other people... yess mainly dating but also randomly.... because they dont see the whole picture, they just see what i do in my rare free time, not the ammount just what i do, and they dont understand the hobby. As for fellow hobbyists - someone that has hundreds of half started projects around i wouldnt call lazy, just unorganized. I have One game im currently playing, i have one box of Models im working at and i have one "Photo Shoot Event" im working trough in Lightroom. That way i actually get progress in my hobby if do things in that area. Yes i dont often dust off my apartment and such... but thats like the analogy that you have to your lawn mowings... its don on a need basis not on a regulatory basis

Just to add on to that last point, regarding the 24 hours; if youre comparing yourself to professional painters, or other people that seem to crank out model after model, remember that they may have the same 24 hours, bit its probably allocated differently! If you aren't working from home, how much time of your 24 hours is spent getting ready to leave the house, or spent on the commute? What if you take the bus or train? What if you have children that also need to get places or have extra curricular activities? No one's life is the same, and its much easier to accept how you spend your time when you recognize that most of your time spent is usually out of your control. I hope that makes sense to anyone reading this!

I've felt the sunk cost feelings with my models. I bought a start collecting box for 2 models because it was the same cost as buying them separately and I didn't have to order them. I felt like I "needed" to build and paint the rest of them because I had already started a "mini army" of the faction. But I'm not interested in the faction and the models I wanted were meant to be used in other games. I started working on the models I didn't want and half way through making them, I reminded myself that this isn't of any interest to me and I shouldn't feel the need to finish them as that wasn't my intention when I originally purchased them. It was good to have that clarity, but that instinct of trying to get the most value of sunk costs was strong. Always good to take a step back when things feel a little "off".

People will ALWAYS find time and motivation for things they are genuinely interested in, no matter how busy they tell you they are. But something I think a lot of people forget is that this motivation and interest isn't a flat constant. It can come and go, it can fluctuate. This applies to pretty much everything. Hobbies, people, etc. Since we're here, RU-vid is a great example of this. Sometimes I have zero desire to watch some of my favourite youtubers, and this can last months because at the time the content they do isn't interesting to me... But down the line I'll find I suddenly really want to go back and watch all the stuff I've missed from them.

Top tier video! I had always considered myself a slow and bad painter until this summer when I entered my local game store's painting competition in the amateur category. I sat down and finished a Plague Marine I had worked on for quite some time (loss of motivation etc.) and ended up getting 2nd place. Let's just say I was shocked. I felt proud at that moment, and felt that maybe I am just slow, and not necessarily bad. I also think a lot of people in the hobby overlook how many there are who spend their hobby time writing stories in-universe instead of "playing the game/painting" etc.

Another great video. Your tone is very...reasonable. I wish more people saw things from such a comforting inclusive perspective. Project size can make fun feel like work. The first few colors of a 10 model unit feels like work as there is so much work remaining. 5 model units are more fun. Single figures are a joy. If I painted all my figures as individuals I would never have a finished army. The progress of finishing 5 at a time helps with motivation. I have found a happy zone for my skills and interest (for now.) Regular self-evaluation to decide what works for oneself is healthy.

This is wisdom right here. We are in a hobby that we want to feel good about, so we shouldn't make ourselves feel bad about it and we must certainly should not let other people make us feel bad about it! Confession time: I'm 34 years old at the time of writing and I'm still extremely nervous when I go to a store to buy warhammer stuff and because if that nervousness I've never gotten to know anyone else who is into this hobby because I've always recieved bad words about it... And the word "Lazy" is something people have always called me so trust me, if it doesn't feel like a hurtful thing that will affect you right now it definitely will affect you over time.... So let's listen to the wise man and least stop doing it to each other.

It's interesting I've always been introverted, but the pandemic has taught me that doing things around other people makes a difference. I recently got diagnosed with adult ADHD. I've spent my whole life being told to 'try harder' and 'work harder' and 'not be lazy'. I realized I've had to work twice as hard as neuro-typical people just to get by with basic life. I never sit still, I always have a hundred projects going on, I CANNOT and never have been able to just sit and do nothing. It just takes me insane amounts of effort to pull a project over the finish line. That last 20% takes every bit of effort to get it over the finish line. With medication, I'm amazed at how effortless it is to get stuff done. I can stay on task, I can finish stuff and I can organize my thoughts enough to prioritize getting stuff done that matters first. The more I learn about the human mind the more I realize 'lazy' is an archaic term based on a very shallow, judgmental and patronizing understanding of the mind and other people.

I do agree that a lot of people who act "lazy" are just burned out of the hobby and in some cases it's even permanent and they don't realize it. I also agree that being lazy when it comes to a hobby is kind of a silly way of putting things, you paint when you feel like it and when you don't feel like, you just don't it, it's only a hobby. The most important aspect of the entire hobby should be: am I enjoying this. if you're not and it's just same and it doesn't change, you might have to consider quitting or going in another direction. I've been doing this for 23 years now, I still enjoy this so much, I find painting so relaxing and it's so much fun to do, when you're done it's awesome to see your fully painted minis. There's something about seeing masses of painted minis that just brings joy to my life.

I totally relate to the lawn mowing example. We have first time homeowners next door since April. I think he mows every 3 days. I haven't mowed in months. It's winter. We don't have snow here, but the grass isn't growing. It looks more or less the same now as it did last month. I don't get mowing every weekend and once mid-week too. And their grass is so short, I think it must not be healthy. I keep thinking that they'll "grow out of" the new homeowner diligence. Meanwhile, the neighbor across the street from them still has rotting pumpkins lining the driveway. I think I'm okay with not mowing in the past months.

I'm one of the "slow painters". The hardest thing is to paint all the main colours on my models. This often is very demotivating and exhausting because the models look awful in this phase and the progress is so slow. So I've got the feeling, that it will take forever to paint them and this is making me "lazy" and I'm easily distracted by other things . But when it comes to details and highlighting my models, the more motivated I become. And in the end I've spent most of the time with painting little, tiny spots or lines to make my models more detailed, without being exhausted or frustrated at any time. It's paradox, because painting the main colours doesn't take that long than doing all the details. The fact, that it actually takes so long is, that I'm often demotivated and therefore doing other stuff, e. g. watching videos on RU-vid about being lazy in your hobby.

I'm totally confused! How is not caring about mowing the grass viewed as being lazy?? Geez, isn't that what the lawn care service folks do? I've often sat at my painting station, happily painting away as they go past my window. i don't feel lazy in the least! Happy Hobbying to One and All!

As an odd perception that I have. Doing wargame stuff, building, painting, etc. I've noticed it's similar to writing music, as in multiple songs, in that it can be negatively repeatative. The songs (tasks) flow into one and lose the differences that make them special. It's really a benefit to go from a ballad to a free form melody. Kind of like building all of your intercessors then your chaplain, or time to build/paint that overhead walkway set.

I've been thinking about this concept more recently as I've added more years under my belt as a teacher. It is often easy to call students lazy but maybe they just don't care (definitely) or have other things that take up their time that they deem more important. Too bad the system isn't set up to support their different interests. Definitely think this would be an important video to show educators even if they may be VERY confused about painting little grey plastic figures.

The way I combat my schizophrenic nature, hopping around from project to project, is by having lots of projects going at once. They are varied, and I usually have something I am interested in doing. Granted, it takes a long time to get any single project done, but I am usually always interested in what I am painting. Thanks for the vid, Uncle Atom. Another reason not to use the word "lazy" is that lazy is the opposite side of the coin of "work" and I don't want to think of my hobby, even inverserly, as "work".

I am attempting to be a display painter. I paint religiously (absolute minimum two hours/day) I had to learn that not painting something I was in the middle of (so that I could get back to it when I was inspired and enthusiastic) was not laziness, and actually produces much better results. Side note - "Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow" is a much cooler phrase than the quick brown fox for using the entire alphabet.

I consider the default Necron paint scheme lazy, or at least unimaginative. However, it's been years since I painted mine because my paint scheme is too much hassle, so I try not to disparage anyone who goes with the default plain silver. The best plan is the one that you will actually do.

I think it's rude to call it lazy as people have different priorities but there is fair criticism for instance one of my friend doesn't call me lazy but he does say i do have a 'pile of shame'. I buy way more figures than i can paint and I'm a slow ass painter plus easily distracted. I love painting but hate wasting figures with quick or imperfect paint jobs, damn my ocd. So examples are my necromunda gang has one fantastically painted mini and I'm still painting my reaper bones 3 kickstarter minis but bones 5(which i spent way too much on) is showing up in April... so it's more the wasted potential lovely figures.

There's a saying project management: quick, good, cheap: pick two. You can't have all three. Cheap isn't just a monetary cost, there's a resource cost as well. What is your time worth? I'm using contrast paints for a base so I can quickly get minis on the table. I'll come back and add more quality as time allows afterwards.

It's definitely something other than laziness for me. I spend all day dreaming about painting while I'm working but by the time I can get around to it, I'm just too burnt to be able to paint. That and my best motivation to paint, what gets me to finish projects, is actually playing. If I have a game I want to bring x models to, I'm going to get it done. Too bad this covid thing has thrown all that out the window.

Thanks for the interesting videos. As a new Warhammer 40k and AOS Player I have really enjoyed these videos on various topics. I would love to see a video on how to organize and set up a Narrative set pf games for 40 or AOS. As a way to recruit new people in my local area I am wanting to establish a fun and interesting series of games set to a narrative that ties in the lore and character development. The one thing that has helped me get people interested so far is to have really cool and detailed terrain pieces on the battlefield, it seems to attract positive attention and interest. Im wanting to build on that initial interest by advertising a really cool narrative story and game for potential new players to want to play. I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject matter if you have not already done so. Thanks again and keep up the good work! Ben

I’m not lazy or even bored... I’m tired and have very little time. My job keeps me working very long days most of the time (10 hour days and at least one day on the weekends for most weeks). That leaves about one day a week to do everything I want to do, from chores to hobbies. And I have a lot of hobbies. So I’m trying to learn to be less of a perfectionist with mini painting. Not every mini needs to be a work of art. My goal for this year is to paint more, even if it’s just three colors and a wash for most minis.

I tend to refer to Engineering as "productive laziness," finding ways to get a specific result with the minimum energy expended. A specific X for the minimum Y. If the equation is solved to make Y the constant, it becomes getting the maximum X for a specific Y. The maximum result for a specific energy expenditure, in other words, Efficiency. Yes, I just equated Laziness with Efficiency. Drives supervisors nuts when I explain this to them, as they can't find a problem in the math, so they can't call me wrong. And since I'm not wrong, I've just 'proven' to them that Lazy = Efficient and they just lost the use of one of their favorite "motivating" terms. Boss: "Don't be so lazy." Me: "So you want me to be LESS efficient, boss?" Boss: "That's not what I meant." Me: "Then what DID you mean?" Boss: "I want to see more productivity." Me: "I'm meeting all the productivity milestones, and doing it with less effort than my peers. Were you looking for more 'activity'? I guess I could waste energy with useless additional motions, but that would actually REDUCE my efficiency. I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused, do you want me to 'work harder, not smarter'?" (at this point the boss will typically realize he's not going to make any headway unless he 'singles me out' with higher productivity milestones (and if he goes that route, I will question why I am required to do more than my peers for the same pay as them), and will walk away.

In my mind Lazy is a negative interpretation 'not doing what your supposed to'. So referring to yourself as lazy is 'I think I should have done a thing but I didn't'. Which can be a useful tool so long as you're making informed decisions and aren't suffering for not doing the thing. Calling soneone else lazy is 'I want you to do this thing and I'm shaming you for not doing It'. The parents call the teen lazy for not taking the trash out. Atoms neighbours think he's lazy because he doesn't mow much. Someone on the Internet thinks you're lazy because you didn't do enough to meet their standards.
