People keep pointing to Newcastle but as Simon points out Newcastle are under FFP what they have spent so far is spending power stockpiled from the Mike Ashley era, the new owners are just lucky that Ashley ran the club on a shoe string budget because they wouldn’t be able to spend otherwise. Even their new sponsorship had to be agreed upon at fair market value and it’s less than Spurs’ deal despite Newcastle being in the Champions League. However let's make no mistake FFP is more or less to protect the status quo after the horse has already bolted, unfortunately for the previous top 6, they didn't really bank on clubs spending their money better and getting value for the fees they are spending

At last someone who understands our FFP situation, people keep saying we only have £75m to spend this window, I've said it's no more than £75m per player, we aren't in the £100m player leagues yet, but we aren't to far away thanks to the Ashley tight wallet years and the speed of our evolution....

@hartshaped
@hartshaped Год назад
@@Cristobal_2012 that's more or less what I'm saying, for Newcastle to have spent what they have spent now all it would have taken is Mike Ashley to have spent an extra £40m each season on a or 2 player over the space of 7 years (or even just 7 windows), which is more or less what the teams around them had been able to afford to do. Ashley was happy to coast by spending the minimum amount to treadwater above the relegation zone (twice that backfired). Take the spending of the new ownership away and Newcastle would be behind West Ham, Villa, Wolves, Forest, who I'd say Newcastle really should be competing with regardless

Man United were financially doped by Sky Sports and drove up inflation in purchase prices and wages since "football began in 1992". United were averaging crowds of just over 40k in the 80s. Yes, they brought through some youth, many of whom were tapped up from other clubs. However, the majority of their success was due to players brought in from elsewhere for inflated prices and wages. Sky and most MSM were and are providing marketing and PR to United (and 2 other cartel clubs) to grow their brand. United were heavily commercialised before other clubs were I.e. Sold out first. The main issue is that other clubs are now far better run than the cartel clubs. City's owners are bringing money into the game and supporting their local community, whilst United's owners are taking money out and do little for the local community. You do know United are on Wall St and the business is registered in The Caribbean and not Manchester? Cartel supporting fans are deluded and will make up any nonsense to try and maintain competitive advantage. The Saudis are expanding their new league. Good luck to them. It won't surpass the EPL any time soon.

Simon's constant reference to "governance" is a bit silly. Large amounts of money have a habit of finding their naughty way around most rules associated with governance in all industries. He should probably drop this argument since it really isn't valid these days. Meanwhile, the UK as a whole is paying heavily for its colonial history and I have the feeling that our football industry is now also about to start paying for having disrespected the sport by allowing our domestic game to be turned into a financial mess that is pretty much run and owned by foreign owners, foreign Managers and foreign players who are only involved in it (for now) because they have been able to make more here. Now that bigger returns can be made elsewhere, the entire circus will simply pack up its bags and move on to where the cheques are bigger...

Simon is delusional if he thinks the rules were ever about finances rather than naked protectionism. If the rules were about sound finances they would have banned leveraged buyouts, mandated repayment of debt, especially in cases where dividends were issued but debt left to fester, and a mechanism could have been set up to allow owners to invest without threat of pulling the plug through guaranteed bonds or the like with rules governing how they could be utilised. Instead, the Glazers, terrible owners, hated by the fans, met the rules. City's owners, outstanding and loved by the fans, were punished.
