In the construction industry, stress is often an unavoidable part of the job. But what happens when it becomes too much to handle? In this video, I open up about my personal journey through the highs and lows of working in the building industry. I'll share the challenges I've faced, the pressure to 'toughen up,' and how it all started to take a toll on my mental health. More importantly, I’ll discuss the steps I took to regain control, including seeking therapy and adopting strategies to manage stress. Join me as I break down the stigma around mental health in our trade and offer insights that could help you or someone you know.

Mate, I'm with you 100%. I've been through a lifetime of anxiety issues, a couple of divorces, suicidal thoughts and advanced metastatic prostate cancer. I was blown away by how just slowly opening up about my inner stuff to my psychologist has given me so many tools to regulate myself and see things in a way that gives me the control over myself. Thanks for putting this up, even if it only saves one person it's well worth it.

Wow. More of this is needed. Thanks for being open, vulnerable, and willing to share your story in a raw and honest way. Very well articulated. Great service to partner with.

Thank you for being honest and speaking about this. As someone who works in the trades I've seen it first hand where people are struggling but they don't know who to ask for help or who to talk to about it. Again thank you for talking about this. That first conversation is often the hardest one

I don't show my toughness by not wearing masks when I need to. I show my toughness by wearing masks and not giving a damn about what others think. Very helpful, Josh. I work in the construction industry and love your content.

One job I was on, early 2000s,I was carrying a large sheet of Gib I think it was. Boss sees me and comes over to help and says, "Two man job, we don't do that macho BS round here". But other jobs in the past, literally didn't think like that.

Takes real strength to speak up about this, especially in an industry such as construction Good on you for being so open and straight up. More blokes such as yourself will lead the way to creating a working environment that is both more healthy and productive. Kia Kaha

Thankyou for making this. I'm sure it will help many people, but at the same time, personally, watching and learning from your videos has been so helpful in my own mental health, as I suffer from PTSD from having been in a war zone. Can't wait to see what the future holds for you and your channel. All the best.

This video is more pertinent than ever. Here in the US we are currently dealing with a drastic increase in suicides of construction workers. Great video and an excellent way to get the word out

This is very cool. I like your channel. I started watching it because I was looking at building….on a doable budget……and I liked how real you are. This confirms that you are one of the decent blokes! Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront. I hope you are doing well and I look forward to seeing more of your great content 😊

Great video. Do you think that we are dealing with some unnecessary pressures through beauracracy and unnecessary workable councils. Trying to keep guys working on site but getting inspection blocks for trivial things. Add to the fact that they are weeks behind in booking inspections. It feels like it is sometimes unworkable.

good on you bro. its easy to be a dooche and bottle it up, thinking thats the mans position. i learned that its about unloading to the right people. some people arent there for you to unload and they shouldnt have to be . sometimes its our kids or a soft touch that brings us back to human reality. people struggle with difficult massive problems but sometimes its because they are focused on the big issues rather than completing the things they are good at. doing the small things and making progress is good for morale and its the feel good endorphins we need right? keep up the good work mate. :)

Josh, Thank you for sharing. Number one is knowing that you take reward is what you do. Sometimes we miss the mark and learning from our miss’s is the key. Sharing with others is a strength. The tool I learnt about was simply finding something you enjoy and do it for 20 min each day, don’t care what it is, just find that joy moment. Thanks Josh.

Kia ora Josh- fabulous podcast on such an important subject. Thank you for sharing your experience. However observing the construction industry through my son- I wonder with the pressure of long hours starting at 7.30 am often being on the road at 6am to travel to work depending on where the site is and finishing at 5pm or often later, 2 x 30 minute breaks, where is the time to take for your health? There isn't even time to get on the phone to make an appointment (often one has to wait ages for a call to be answered there goes your break) let alone actually attend a doctors or therapist session? Therapy is often required over a period of time and on a weekly basis. How can this be managed on these very busy, time driven work places? Can this be dealt with in the contract under the health and safety clause? The most important part in all this is that the boss or site manager be empathetic and committed to his workers wellbeing. Can you tell us how to manage this please?

im sorry...I rarely comment but have to now step in.. My Dad was laughed at for not wearing dust mask and passed away from lung cancer. Bullying is bigger than it appears, I hate that culture. Thank you for speaking up, Josh.

Therapists and mentors are fine but knowing who God is and having faith in God has been the best thing for me. "Man enough to talk about your stuff". Talking to therapists who could have some political agenda can make you worse if you're unlucky. The real search is knowing who God is for yourself, in my opinion.
