Thank You for all your help. This was a great tip. I stopped working out at the gym because my planner fasciitis got really bad. The treadmill was the only thing I used for cardio. I started using the rowing machine and love it! Well, not at first. Hahaha! The machine looked scary and hard. Now, I work out to your videos at the gym.Thanks for all you do. God Bless You!

Hi Shane, noticed that different shoes can also attribute to this. If i use my Sketchers, then my heels come loose just a bit. But if I use my running shoes (les flex) then no problems to keep heels on the feet-rest. Thanks for all the amazing videos, it keeps me rowing, lost 10kg in the last 3 months. eat less, move more

Great tip - the band. I'm just coming back to rowing after being away from regular exercise and stretching for just over a year. I find lack of ankle mobility is also a factor in how tight you can set up the catch - with heels down.

I've started rowing and taken the advice to keep heals down a first. Partily because I heard this advice and also because of a toe injury. It's been helpful for me to break down the stroke into individual parts like shane does in many of his beginner videos. Heals down is one more way to focus on other mechanics prior to pulling the full stroke. I do believe it will give me a stronger stroke later on. I love the videos, thanks for putting the content out there.

When I first started rowing at the gym, after a few times on the machine I noticed my shins were hurting a lot. I asked one of the 'trainers' to watch me row and see if I was doing anything wrong. He spotted the heel lift and a couple of other things. I re-trained myself not to lift the heels and I've been fine ever since. Fortunately that was very very early in beginning to spend time on the erg, so that was curbed very easily and quickly.

Catching it early is so important otherwise it can be really hard to untrain. Nice work Gaelyne!

Great information, I’m fairly sure I’ve been overreaching and stressing my back too much. The band “relearning” method should help reset and build back up.

Great video. I just got my concept2 and I realised my force curve was a mess. I noticed several reason, one of them being going too fat on the catch because of lifting my heels. Good reminder not to collapse at the catch, it is only counter productive.

YES! Great point Jay and exactly right. Not collapsing can have a big impact on overall positioning and performance.

just yesterday I was wondering if there was a bumper I could put on my rower so I don't do all the things that make my body hurt when rowing by going too far forward. Then youtube recommended this! yay!

Shane, I have the upmost respect for you and what you do for the indoor rowing community. And, one of the things that I have learned in my decades of coaching is, if you ask 10 crew coaches a question, you’ll get 11 answers. My training methodology is to train body/hip/shin position at the catch with heels-up then work Achilles’ tendon flexibility (very specific training) to achieve heels down. I’d love to discus more.
@DarkHorseRowing
@DarkHorseRowing 4 года назад
Charlie, you know I always love and respect your insight! I like that approach too considering you take a specific approach to the improvement of the Achilles. What kind of program do you use for the lengthening/retraining process there? Is it a specific protocol or do you individually prescribe to each athlete?

Thanks so much Shane. I'm approaching 60 and started rowing in March after several years of not working out. Love your idea of creating a stop! I have been trying so hard to master not bringing up my heels! thank you so much for all the videos you do, you are really making a difference in a lot of people's lives! God bless you!

I must try this, I find that I probably over reach and lift the heels, but I have limited flexibility in my heels so it'll be interesting to see how I get on. Thanks for all the great videos

This will be a good exercise for me. While I'm able to maintain a neutral posture throughout the stroke and at the catch, I have a feeling that my reach is too far, bringing my shins out of vertical. I'm going to give this a try today. As always Shane, helpful tips and guidance. Thanks!

Your extraordinary depth of knowledge is unquestionable. I do find myself thinking of "paralysis by analysis " considering your thousands of do's, don't's, rights and wrongs. I have always rowed intuitively, with reasonable success. The more coaching points I take on board, the less fluid I am and I find myself getting overwhelmed by the minutae of the stroke. I wonder if there is an approach whereby a coach presents key fundamentals, and allows the rower to work out putting those together. As a coach of various sports I am trying the different approaches. Interested in your thoughts. "Different strokes for different folks"?? As an aside, why the emphasis on calories? It comes up a lot: calorie burn sessions, improve technique to burn more calories. Ps; running can be highly technical; as with many sports, the technicality depends entirely on the participants motivation, personality type and desire to achieve and or improve.

Hey, I'm quite overweight and I'm working on it; I lost 44Lbs already; But I'm looking for a new exercise method; So I bought a rowing machine (Tunturi R60 Water); Yet, I seem to struggle to find a good posture; mainly my upper body; when u go to the 'preparation' position my belly gets in the way to simulate your movements; It feels like my upper part of the body is moving quite a bit; yet my core barely moves; Any tips for postures for heavier people to keep rowing! Love the beginner rowing videos!

Keep up the good work. For the catch try not too go too far so that your position doesn’t suffer (knees going outward,) Go as far as belly allow to star with. Shane made a good video about that few years ago, worth looking for it.

@@jays5111 cheers, I indeed tried it once where my knees went outwards, as this movement is recognized from lifting, after 15 minutes it felt terrible and I tried to follow postures as excecuted as in the vids, ill try to trace this video of you recommended.

Thanks for this video. Does same principle work if you’re rowing with just one leg? which I am, because I’m an above knee amputee and prefer to row without wearing my prosthesis.

I started on the C2 after using the water rower at the gym, managed to train myself to stop the heel lift. I started going back to the gym and the rower recently. The foot plates on the water rower are closer together which makes it difficult for me not to lift my heels. Still like the C2 better. :)

I get frustrated with trying to keep my heels down but I can't get in the correct catch position at 1100 unless I lift my heels to get my knees closer to my chest. I wrote that before the instruction part started. So I don't need to come up as deep as I think I need to which is why I am lifting my heels.

I'm quite inflexible so to get the seat moving more than 6inches I have to lift. I just try keep my back straight in the catch.

Hello. I've just started rowing and have new hot tightness behind my knees is this related to trying to keep my feet flat and reaching too deeply? Keen to learn and not be put off thanks DH

With short legs and a big belly, and limited flexibility I find it very hard to get much of a catch if I don’t heel lift. I can’t even slide the seat very far. But point taken will try more and see if I notice any improvement.

Thank you for making this video. I’ve been wanting to purchase a rowing machine for years now. I use to use the rowing machine to stay fit and build strength. I’ve tried and purchased other exercise equipment that was too low or hurted getting on and off. Now I’m older and at 6’ 250+ lbs with bone and joint issues I am more convinced and ready to purchase. But will it accommodate my weight?

Is it okay to pivot the foot pedal 1-1/2" to keep the foot flat? I feel I am keeping good straight back posture but due to the extra padding in my middle I'm not quite able to maintain that deep an arch with my ankle and shins.
