This is the Main Theme from "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?", the school-based game show in which adults try to prove if they are better and more intelligent than 5th-Grade students in Elementary School.
This show ran from 2007 to 2009 on FOX, then ran in syndication from 2009 to 2011. Finally, the show returned to FOX for a 2015 revival. The game show was hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy.
In this game, contestants try to answer questions based on Elementary School subjects; questions are of increasing difficulty, and may range from true-or-false questions, dual- or multiple-choice questions, or other general-knowledge questions.
All grade levels had two questions, each with varying subjects ranging from math, science, etc.
A correct answer raises the contestant up the Money Ladder; the ladder on the FOX original series is as follows:
1. $1,000
2. $2,000
3. $5,000
4. $10,000
5. $25,000 (this level is a guarantee regardless of the outcome)
6. $50,000
7. $100,000
8. $175,000
9. $300,000
10. $500,000
11. $1,000,000 (Top Prize)
In Season 1 of the syndicated version, the payout structure was different; the structure was as follows:
1st Grade=$500
2nd Grade=$1,000
3rd Grade=$2,500
4th Grade=$3,500
5th Grade=$5,000
A change in Season 2 of the syndicated version is that the contestant can no longer choose what grade-level question they want; instead they are asked two questions each with random subjects, starting with 1st Grade, then 2nd Grade, and so forth until all questions have been answered prior to the Bonus Question.
Season 2's payout structure was:
1st Grade=$500
2nd Grade=$1,000
3rd Grade=$3,500
4th Grade=$7,500
The syndicated version's Bonus Question increases the cumulative winnings tenfold, as long as at least the Final Question beforehand is answered correctly.
Season 2's Bonus Question was the only 5th Grade Question, reducing the number of questions in Season 1 from 11 to 9; in all cases, the potential Top Prize that could be won on the syndicated version is $250,000.
A student could be selected for two questions each (FOX) or three questions each (Syndication).
There are three Cheats to help a contestant out; a Copy, a Peek and a Save. The cheats are described below:
1. Copy - The contestant can Copy the 5th Grade student's answer and it must be locked in; if the student was incorrect, the contestant would lose the game (if this cheat is used, the Save cheat will have no effect)
2. Peek - The contestant will be allowed to look/peek at the 5th Grade student's answer; however, the contestant MUST answer the question either by going with the student's answer or coming up with a different answer.
3. Save - If the contestant answers a question incorrectly, the student can Save them if they wrote down the correct answer; however, if the student also got it wrong, the contestant loses the game (this cheat was removed from Season 2 of the syndicated version)
The students are out of play for the remainder of the game if either (1) all Cheats have been used, and/or (2) the contestant reached the Bonus Question.
If at any point a contestant gives an incorrect answer, they would "Flunk Out"; however, if they decide to quit (except on the Bonus Question), they will "Drop Out" instead. In either case, a contestant has to look in front of a camera, state their name and declare that he or she is "NOT Smarter Than A 5th Grader".
In the FOX version, if a contestant answers the $25,000 Question correctly, they will leave the show with at least that much money, regardless of the outcome (including when he or she gives an incorrect answer starting from the $50,000 Question onwards).
In the syndicated version, the contestant also says that they are "NOT Smarter Than A 5th Grader" if they answer the Bonus Question correctly but fail to win the Top Prize after missing any earlier questions.
If the contestant answered all questions correctly (including the Bonus Question), he or she would win $1,000,000 (FOX) or $250,000 (Syndication) and will be able to declare that they "ARE Smarter Than A 5th Grader".
If the contestant failed to make a declaration, they would forfeit the game, and they would lose the money they won.
In the syndicated version, if the contestant gave an incorrect answer (and did not get Saved in Season 1), all cumulative winnings are taken away, reducing the score back down to $0; if this happens on the Final Question before attempting to go for the Bonus Question, the contestant loses the game.
Two people have won the Top Prize of $1,000,000 on FOX; they are Kathy Cox, superintendent of public schools in the US state of Georgia, and George Smoot, professor of the University of California in Berkeley AND 2006 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics.
Two people on the syndicated version won the Top Prize of $250,000; Elizabeth Miller and Geoff Wolinetz (the latter used no Cheats in his entire run).
