Thank you for not using the provocative, click-baity, "You _are_ using the block plane wrong". Turns out I'm using it "right". _I.e.,_ wherever it works best. Thanks for the content!

My Dad also used a block plane on the end grain of boards. I, and especially my Dad, learned carpentry before power tools were a thing. I was never as patient with sharpening as my Dad so I only used my block plane for chamfering.

My first hand tool more complex than a chisel was a Lee Valley low angle block plane. When I first used it on a hunk of poplar, I was amazed on how thin and smooth I could shave the wood. It sits quietly in my shop apron, ready to be used for chamfering, smoothing end grain and the occasional edge of a board when I refuse to walk 15ft to get my bench plane.

I have a low angle block plane from Veritas, fitted with a high angle plane iron and a full-size tote and knob, which makes a weird but actually comfortable #1 smoother. It is dumb and I love it. PS : doing so, I finally have an excuse to ALSO buy a DX60, hehehe. In the meantime, my normal block plane use is done by my rabetting block plane from Dictum, a very good value.

Nice! i got the tail knob set for my 3 dot low angle and very happy with it. also just got the chamfer guide that works exactly as advertised.

I just got one, and I find I like it for similar purposes as my ryoba: Good for working where I don't have normal workholding available. I'm working on a big chair right now (lambing chair, look it up, I bet you'd like building one) and it's already set up, but it needs some more work. The block plane and ryoba are handy for working in awkward positions.

These days, my block plane has become my favorite shooting plane. Far more comfortable to hold sideways than a 4 or 5, and the low angle helps cut the end grain.

I'm most certainly a power tool woodworker... But I use my bench plane on probably 50% of projects. Hand planes are just so handy.... Maybe I need to consider a block plane too?

Yep. It's a tool; use it. Check it when you buy it; re-zero it, test it, fiddle with it until familiar. But use it as it works best For You. Anything that isn't outright damaging, and if necessary, even that. It's a Tool. Use it.

I like to use my Wood River low angle block plane. I just don't go over board. I would not want to be known as a block head.😂

Random question, at what point would u say a mechanical planer is worse than a hand plane? I have a few bench planes, but they can't even out wood the best since so far my glue ups warp and i have to spend a few months sandind/planing them.(i dont do woodworking that often) I'm guessing a no4 or no5 is best for smoothing a face, rather than fixing a warp, right?

Electric planer is good for taking off a lot of material but it is very poor taking off a small amount of material. Usually somewhere around a 16th of an inch I wouldn't want to use an electric.
@KBorham
@KBorham 7 месяцев назад
You will want to step up your sharpening game. Mechanical planers are worse with figured and wild grain, and end grain like a cutting board.

Different strokes for different folks?.. That's what SHE said!!! 😂😂😂 Hey but seriously, other than it being one handed and maybe some people are to lazy to use both, wouldn't a spokeshave be better for chamfering?

Today I learned I've been using the block plain wrongly. Then again, I'm too cheap to get a decent hand plane.

Keep your eye out for used bench planes. You can get a really nice antique plane that doesn’t need much work for under $20

Decent smoothers and jacks can be found at decent prices. I have a several jack planes that I’d let go for $25 apiece.

I find them to be just about useless. Bench planes are just easier for me.
@jimdavis8391
@jimdavis8391 7 месяцев назад
It has nothing to do with the size, shape or weight of a block plane. They simply were not designed for planing along grain, they are primarily an end grain tool. Bench planes have double irons with a chip breaker (cap iron), that's the main reason they are more effective for long grain planing operations.
