In the manga series, Micky's F-14 is an Iranian bought plane that never made it to Iran. Micky had the cockpit modified so he could run most of the avionics package from the front seat.
Pretty much any "fly through the narrow place to hit an important thing that is hard to hit" is inspired by the Dambusters raid. And that raid was far more insane than flying through a canyon at night in 60s/70s era fighters. The Dambusters did the same thing in Lancaster bombers, also at night. They flew incredibly low, barely above treetop level (one plane flew THROUGH a firebreak). They flew so low their bombs were torn off by the sea crossing the Channel, or flew into electrical cables. Then, the aircraft flew through the valleys to approach their targets. They made multiple attack runs. One of the valleys was full of fog, so one of the bombers dropped incendiaries to light it up and clear the fog. Also, the bombers had to pull up once they dropped their bombs to avoid hitting the hills behind the dams. Star Wars just took the idea, added dogfights and put it into a sci-fi setting, and then the canyon run just became a trope. In the modern day, pilots do ground attack runs through valleys like Rainbow Canyon in the US. There are other places, like the Mach Loop (aka Star Wars Canyon) in the UK, which are also used for low-level training.
One of the things they ported from the original series to the new one.. tought in the original Shin flew a F-20 Tigershark , it was far more bloody and they had the Harrier fight thing in the end
Yeah, which is why I prefer the original OVAs. I'm hoping another, true remake of Area 88 is done in the future, where it combines more elements from the OVA and Manga together
@AstroChickenII Micky's F-14 is modified so it can fly with one pilot only.. it cant use the most advanced radar functions like Data Link or the Phoenix, but since there were not such things in that area ... also almost all F-4 Phantoms in A88 were similary moded to fly with one pilot only.. couple of them could be seen with 2 but mostly were 1 pilot only
Interesing how in the english dub they also change the music. They also don’t call out their guns or missiles or splashes or whenever they’re going clean.
did the creator , writers or producers chose early models of mig-21 bcos it's the back bone of China's AF ?- back in the 90's . They shouda used latter models w/c were more advanced and armed w/radar-guided AAM .
Because, this is a different character. Roundell didn't participate in the Ravine Raid in the OVAs, but he did in both the Manga and OVAs. Nguyen Van Chom, the pilot of the Thunderchief, was introduced much later in the Manga.
i personally think area 88 in japanese made ZERO sense i liked the english version better if u think about it theirs like 4 japanese names in the entire anime ever mentioned and the rest are named like mickey, greg etc lol but thats in my opinion
bad awfully directing anime,a tons of various aircrafts shot out others and explode.A few seconds a hundred of new aircraft appear and fire the missiles...
I love how all the Avenger Mk. II's get slaughtered. But I hate the unrealism of this anime. If you're going to make an anime about flying, make it real. None of those jets could fly through a canyon at night. The engine wash from being so close would also put them into a spiral and they'd crash.
