In my Contrasts In Composition lesson, I discuss how you use different sorts of contrast to direct the eye around an image. One of those types of Contrast is "Contrast Of Detail". That tutorial is an overview of all the different types of contrast, but each type really deserves a deep dive, so this lesson will be a deeper look into "Contrast Of Detail", or another name for the same thing, "Areas Of Visual Detail and Areas Of Visual Rest".

Ah and I am also thinking of getting me the District 9 art book now ! :) Love the art of the movie, never thought of researching the material before.

@@harrysanders818 It's a good book, as well as tons of concept art, it has a whole section on the original alien exosuit that ended up getting replaced with the mech design that ended up in the final film. I always find it fascinating to see the paths that got abandoned.

Thank you for making this video. You have captured a sentiment here that I’ve been trying to lay my finger on for about 2 years now, and it will be very helpful going forward. I work with design of 3d objects digitally and physically, and you’ve helped me realize why often times “simpler” designs tend to look better than hyper-detailed ones

This is incredible. But what workflow to use for image at 0:57? 3dsmax , Zbrush, Houdini? No idea how to make something like this.

Glad you found the tutorial interesting. That image is actually painted in photoshop. Hi, Neil! Thanks for another cool art theory tutorial. That sci-fi battery still bringing memories of your fantastic procedural shading tutorials... :) I'd like to ask what you think of Mudbox nowadays, does it have any place in your workflow? Or Zbrush and Substance completely eliminated it? Btw, recently found a bug in SoulBurn scripts: pivotplacer is no longer working in selection mode (not aligning pivot to selected edge, face) in 3ds max 2020 and 2021.

Thanks Nick, glad you enjoyed it! So I actually haven't had much need for an organic sculpting tool these past few years, I've been focusing more on hard surface and photobashing. But when I do need to do some sculpting again, I'd more likely use oculus medium (I guess its owned by adobe now). Being able to sculpt in VR is a HUGE advantage over mudbox, zbrush or anything else, actually being in the space with your model so brings me back to my old days of traditional media. So that may be worth looking into if you're doing a bunch of sculpting. As for the script bug, I tried the script in max 2022 and it seemed to work fine. If its still failing for you, visit my website, go to the contact page, and send me an email with a file that breaks and a step by step instruction list and I'll see if I can figure out what's going on. Thanks!

So basically areas of visual rest are there so your eyes can take a breath.

Yup. Too much stimulus can deaden the ability for the eye to make sense of what its seeing. So just like music, you need quiet parts and loud parts
