A massive radio telescope made famous as the backdrop for a pivotal scene in the James Bond film "GoldenEye" and other Hollywood hits was found suddenly out of commission after cables mysteriously snapped and smashed into the facility's main dish. Jeff Glor hears from the Arecibo Observatory's director about what scientists are doing to get the telescope operational.

@Robbie AR Do you have a link to the source that claims that they will build an ever bigger dish? I'm really interested in this but have not found anything about plans to rebuild it. I know they were planning to do a controlled demolition on Arecibo anyway because it was impossible to fix the cables but I still think it's sad to see it go down like that. The only thing I found on plans for a replacement was the idea of an array of smaller dishes instead of one large dish like Arecibo. They also plan to add radar capabilities to the primary dish in West Virginia's Green Bank Observatory but that was already planned before the loss of Arecibo.

Without actually being there I'm at a disadvantage in the following statement. First, cable breaking is definitely the result of insufficient "working length, flexibility, heating, and clamping that will provide the necessary structure to protect the cable. Aircraft are faced with this problem every time the plane's engines are operating, both on the ground and in the air. The wings on a plane have a natural flex during flight. It seems obvious that the cable must be allowed to flex accordingly. The major difference here is the immensity of the dish, the length of the cable, and possibly the inability to

No mystery in this destruction. Lack of maintenance, threads corroded and snapped, one of the cables became too thin to stay held in place and slipped out, loading on the other cables became too great so they too "snapped", bringing the concrete towers down. All caught on camera by a survey drone. No mystery, other than the lack of journalism.

I don't think so that they can have faked it too hot to get replaced at one time with her down replace the cable super-sized structure that well will be the same for a little bit different because it is him to be like who is the charging rate that to fix it or not face it because time is always moving and the clock is always moving as well

China's radio telescope is not similar. It does not have any transmitting capability, only listening capability. Aerobico were in fact our worlds biggest radar station. Please learn more details here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dt1ygf5AAuM.html

No. It did not “serve its purpose,” if you are suggesting it had become obsolete and was no longer needed. It was still relevant and important to protecting Earth from incoming asteroids. news.yahoo.com/china-now-holds-worlds-last-023148667.html

@@kanadum Some other realities you might want to consider are, 'if it was still relevant the people who pay the money to maintain and use it would have spent the money to repair it if THEY thought it was still relevant, and they didn't.. That's a fact. Something else to consider is that it was built in 63' and many radio telescopes have been built around the earth since then and most of them are easier to point in a wider range of directions than that one. Again it has a very limited range in it's field of view. It's no relevant anymore because the people who run it say so. And yet another point to consider is that it was built by the military and they stopped using it a long time ago. Which also talks to it's relevancy.

@@gagarinone yes, I know this already and mentioned it.. but as it turns out, the reality is that this doesn't matter. the military that built it stopped using it, and there's nothing that requires us to need an instrument that does what this does or more of them would have been built over the last 57 years. There are however other transmitters that can and do send signals into outer space not that we have any indication that anyone is listening. Funding has been dropping that supported this device to the point where no money was reinvested for maintenance. The facts speak for themselves.. follow the money. It was costing money, not making money, and at the end of the day, no matter how unique it might have been, was no longer useful.

Couldn’t the just try and repair it? I know that billions and billions of dollars are needed but if you look at the satalite dish.....it’s only half of it is damaged (maybe less). So really couldn’t they just convince their government to help fund the repairs cause that thing actually looks COMPLETELY salvageable.

2020 claims another victim... but it's no mystery... Over the years they've added equipment to the suspended platform, increasing the weight and therefor stress on the suspension cables. Those were installed in the 60s or 70s... it was only a matter of time before the added weight and the extended stresses on those cables caused a failure. Early in November one of the cables had already snapped, ADDING to the stresses already on the cables. Like I said, it was only a matter of time...
@MarcABrown-tt1fp
@MarcABrown-tt1fp 3 года назад
With all cables connected they were at least at 72% weight capacity. the cables were definitely damaged by the numerous earthquakes, and loosing one of the primaries along with the Aux on a single tower sealed its fate. Even more depressing is the fact that they did have replacement cables ordered.
