I had no idea Aretha had covered this. I have loved this song since I was young....In the movie Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil, KD Lange sang it in the beginning of the movie and has been my favorite version. A more soft and sultry version. Aretha was a force of nature........amazing.

@@HarriBestReactions Did you see the name on the album cover in the video: "Queen in Waiting." That's what Aretha was at 21 years old when she recorded that song.

Perhaps that person never heard Aretha at her peak. Later in her career she made questionable song choices. This song has such beautiful lyrics and Aretha was 21 years old at the time. I think her best music was made when she was with Atlantic Records. Many times great singers have these hidden gems, like Skylark, that never got enough exposure. I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Harri!

@324cmac, Yes Skylark is truly a hidden gem frorn Aretha`s time on the Columbia record label that should have gotten so much more exposure . It`s simply beautiful .... Some other gems from Aretha on Columbia are Take a Look , Only the Lonely, Until You Were Gone , Why was I Born , One Step , as well as her remarkable live performance of No No No I`m Losing You .

How have I not heard this before? I love it. For a more haunting version check out K.D. Lang's version.

Love the Queen of Soul. I love her performances where she is on piano as she is also an accomplished musician. If you get the chance you should look for the YT video of Aretha playing and singing Jumping Jack Flash. Many said it was better than the Stones version. Ironically Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards accompany her on her version. It’s a gas. Thanks for all the great reactions Harri. 👏👏🥰🇨🇦

Great song to react to Harri...what a voice. This track is from her early years at Columbia Records which often gets overlooked in favor of her later more soulful recordings she is known for. There are many gems tucked away on her early Columbia recordings which were mostly produced by Clyde Otis. These early records are more jazz and rhythm & blues and one I would recommend from this era is 'Muddy Water' and also 'Bring It On Home To Me' which was from her later Atlantic recordings but has that jazz feel to it.

@@HarriBestReactions Harri, I know how much you love those "Diamonds in Your Ears ". The song is Cristo Redentor by Donald Byrd from his album A New Perspective released in 64. It really is a beautiful track with Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar and Herbie Hancock on piano. I truly believe you'll love it! Thanks for your heartfelt reactions my friend!❤

This is the best album Arthea ever recorded in my estimation. Her pronunciation of words is clear she is not screaming. This was when she was on her first recording contracts. They kept saying they didn't know what to do with her voice. But to me they did. Another song on this album that I love is MR. ULGY.

Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of this song is transcendent. Especially with that gorgeous Nelson Riddle arrangement. It’s utterly gorgeous. k.d. lang’s version is a close second. For me, this is a weak third.

Well, Etta James and Sarah Vaughn seemed to think it was pretty darn good. From Aretha's biography, Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin: 'Etta James explains that Aretha’s recording of “Skylark” took it “to a whole ‘nother place. When she goes back and sings the chorus the second time and jumps an octave.” James just scratches her head. Sarah Vaughan heard the recording and pays Aretha the highest tribute: “I’m never singing that song again.”'
