I think it was Pauline Kael who said the movie becomes unbelievable when they leave Aretha Franklin in the diner after that number and still take the guy instead.
John Landis was amazed that in the late 70s , though r-e-s-p-e-c-t ed , R&B stars like Aretha weren,t getting much of a look in & were only too happy to get a gig in a movie that became a classic.
The plot twist might be that she probably isn't screaming at the top or her lungs and she has more to give. Singers like her rarely ever scream to the top of their lungs and keep some too!
@@johnhabib289 The 'Fry cook'? That is 'Blue' Lou Marini, man! One of the hottest alto saxes to EVER set fire to New York, Louis Marini is highly regarded as one of the hottest and most sought-after jazz and blues musicians in America. As good as he is with the sax, if you want so much cool that you freeze solid listening, listen to him play jazz flute! (Damn - been looking for the link; it's an old one. Can't find it now.) But MAN - Blue Lou SCREAMED his sax in this film and in New York for decades - he is the EPITOME of cool!
So...according to the Blues Brothers movie there is a place where I can go to church to see James Brown, buy a piano from Ray Charles, get served food by Aretha Franklin, and walk out on the street and see John Lee Hooker perform? I need to go to that place as soon as I possibly can.
I love how even though she's against their goals, the Blues Brothers join in anyway because she's spitting fire and they're musicians first and foremost.
She was a good actress but had a difficult time with the lip synching. They made the right choice by just going with it. If you watch her sing she doesn't match up real well but it adds to the looseness of the scene and fits perfectly into the movie.
By chance, rewatched Blues Brothers a few days before she died. Even my boyfriend, who is not into music at all, said, "wow, this lady can sing". Aretha crossed all borders. Let's never forget her voice.
Holy shit, guys. This escalated so fucking quickly. @The Generic Guy I think you're right. There is indeed a whiff of 4chan but let's not feed the troll any more.
Wait a minute ... you have a // Boyfriend // sticking his willy in you ? ... and you think you are qualified to make a comment on this " MISSION FROM GOD " movie ?
@Manufactured Reality Spoken like someone who doesn't know a thing about music. Aretha recorded several different genres throughout her career. If you think Aretha was average in anything, I'd hate to hear what you think qualifies as amazing.
The guy who plays her husband there (Matt "Guitar" Murphy) died suddenly just two months ago. Before Franklin's terminal illness was publicy announced, he was one of the few people that knew she was dying and what what she was dying of.
Is a shame that many people knows Matt only for the movie when he was an outstanding musician with almost imposible clean licks that he made them look easy to play. Take a look at any video of him playing with Memphis Slim in the 60's to see what I am talking about. Ed: I just corrected a grammar mistake.
This scene was filmed in Nate's Deli in Chicago. After this film, it was packed with customers until it was bought out by the Univ of Chicago for an expansion project in 1995. Today the address doesn't even exist. It's now part of Marie Robinson Hall "Marie Robinson Hall (MRH) is an apartment style residence hall with all students living in individual bedrooms. All apartments are equipped with full kitchens, private bedrooms, and shared bathrooms. While most residents occupy 4-person apartments, there are also a number of 1- and 2-person apartments." A piece of history lost to a dorm. They could have at least built around it and kept the deli intact for the students and the locals. Hell, it was still making money and was a piece of history. Should not have been destroyed.
Ya nothing like Chicago so much history my dad's mom was born and Peoria the love she had for us grandkids and how she raised us so much soul. Chicago is fun
EVERY version of Aretha singing this song is a pure delight and a masterclass in soulful vocals ...but this is my favorite. What a treasure she was and what a treasure these videos and recordings are!!
I'm ashamed to say that I did not appreciate this scene when it first came out. The scales have been lifted from my eyes. Aretha is at her peak and she is unstoppable. There is not a woman on planet Earth that can match her. Even John and Dan realize it. So they join the dance.
I remember this when this movie came out and never forgot. It was the best song of the movie by far. I was in the movie theater and was blown away. Even my father who was not into soul music was alive when this movie made its way to TV was impressed. I don't know a lot in this life but I knew even then that this was a knockout performance the moment I saw it. I bought one of her greatest hits albums 17 years ago. When I heard the news today I grabbed it and it will be playing in my car for a long time.
Just had to see this right NOW. Who else could bring down the house in pink slippers and a grease stained apron. God, please, deliver your daughter to lead the Heavenly Choir. We'll turn up the volume in our hearts.
+90geekgirl06 They probaaly would've stayed out A LOT of trouble. I can just imagine her performing a reprise of this song whenever Jake and Elwood are about to do something stupid.
I learned from Japan. I knew their song today and loved it very much. It's a very good singer! The virus is hard, but let's do our best for each other.
We’ll miss you Aretha. We’ll always THINK about you. “Including now that you’re up there with Cab Calloway, Carrie Fisher, John Belushi, John Candy, and some of the others who were involved in this legendary film.” Your contributions to music and entertainment will live on.
I have a dead pancreas and this woman is heading towards the LORD and I will never forget this performance!! this goes out to the QUEEN OF SOUL Aretha Franklin!
I remember asking my parents to let me watch this movie with 2 guys in black suits, hats and sunglasses on the cover. I'm glad they let me! pretty much shaped me entire youth.
