Genuine question, because that penalty was by the book, and even the questionable penalty against Netherlands was acceptable, it would've happened in a UEFA of any other tournament. Possession generally comes at the cost of defense as your entire teams moves a bit into opponents side. So if there are long breakthroughs from the opponent team, they can use it to their advantage. Kinda how Alvarez/Messi made their runs that game. Same with France strategy against Morocco or Morocco strategy against Portugal. All games had this common.

yea no offense but you know nothing mate lol. Croatia didn't play "terrible". They got this far because they have the best midfield in the whole tournament by a mile. Argentina had to play with 4 midfielders and still couldn't control possession. Also, I know many haven't watched Alvarez play, but he's scored many goals that way because he knows how to cause trouble for defenders and force them to make mistakes like today.
