While I wasn't the biggest fan of "The Prom" and being unaware of her Broadway background, when seeing Ariana in the film, I had a feeling she would make a wonderful Anita and an incredible cinematic successor to Rita Moreno. Seeing her speak both about the project and working with Moreno and the clip of "America" easily confirms it.

The big difference that most people don't think about is this: Rita's Anita danced on a stage set that was dressed to look like a building's roof. The floor would have been wood. Ariana's Anita danced in the street which is a lot different than wood. Anyway, both ladies are fantastic.

The 1961 had great wide shots and being shot on 70mm it must have been magical in the theater. What I love about Spielberg is his camera movement and flow which adds dynamics to a musical. No one moves the camera like Spielberg, absolutely NO ONE! And the 1961 unfortunately lacks that since most of the shots were stills.

@@gpapa31 A lot of it is thanks to his long time dp, Janusz Kamiński
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 2 года назад
@@joewhitehead3 I agree. Kaminski is a large element to the final cinematic experience you get from Spielberg movies but Spielberg has always been a master in camera placement and movement. He may not be the intellectual director of the likes of Kubrick, Fellini, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Bergman, Coppola etc but absolutely no living soul can place and choreograph camera movement throughout an entire scene the way Spielberg does, no one! WSS is a perfect example of that. He did some of, what I believe is, his best work. I would sit back and be in awe with every single scene catching myself getting goosebumps on where the camera would start where it would follow and how it would end a scene. It’s like the camera was another character in the film. That’s why I feel he deserves the Best Director Oscar this year. Unfortunately he won’t get it, it will go to Campion, which she did a remarkable job for The Power Of The Dog I may say, but it’s not to Spielberg’s caliber IMHO.
@joewhitehead3
@joewhitehead3 2 года назад
@@gpapa31 You’re definitely onto something here about Spielberg’s technics in camera placement movement. I’ve seen b-roll footage of him working on his other films where he’d cuff his hands together to look like a camera while giving direction. & it’s all good if he doesn’t win. He’s won before

Ariana Debose it's a great dancer, excellent lines almost professional., just mentioned so professional dancers don't feel underestimated.. Excellent role, Ariana D. is fortunate to have the guideness of an amazing director as Steve Spielberg and Rita Moreno., we all have the tendency to promise things we can't keep mainly due to the lack of skill to reach for oportunities. Knowing who you are and your own limitations is important.. Excellent and honest interview! #GoodMorningAmerica #ArianaDebose #RitaMoreno #WestsideStory #2021 #2024USA❤🧡💛💚💙💜

1. Good idea to have Rita Marino inserted into the Steven Spielberg script of *West Side Story* 2. Best Actress role for Oscar nomination for Spielberg's version will be Maria (Rachel Zegler) and then Anita (Ariana DeBose) for supporting Oscar nomination. I think Rachel Zegler's acting for Maria, was better than Natalie Wood in Robert's Wise production. 3. Second choice for best supporting actress: Rita Marino. (yes again) 4. I did not like any of the character actors choice for either the Jets or Sharks in this Spielberg version. 5. I did not like the first act of the Spielberg version as much as the Robert Wise version, but the second act of Spielberg's version made up for the 1st act's shortcomings. Spielberg's first act of his movie was too, too, dark. 6. My choice for which movie was better would be the flawless *1st* West Side Story. Robert Wise was the better Director in this for the 1st Movie version of the play. However the second act of Spielberg's version made tears come from my eyes, but don't tell anybody as I don't want my manhood questioned. 7. In the first movie the Jet gang gave respect for the little girl playing on the ground and walked around her play area. In the Spielberg version the Jets ripped up the little girls artwork on the ground. I could not get behind the Jets after that. 8. The dance scenes in both versions were equally good. 9. Spielberg claimed he did not want to copy the first, Robert Wise version, however he did in the opening. In the first, Wise version, we have an aerial shot flying over Manhattan, in Spielberg's version we have an aerial shot flying over the demolished section of the gang area with same intro music. 10. Spielberg's version of West Side Story, should be nominated for *Best Picture* Oscar this year, however from the *WOKE* Hollywood, they might choose another low budget foreign movie made with no whites in it, that nobody will see, for diversity's sake. Then that will remind me of Marxist Korean movie (looked like a college student made film) winning Best Picture over "1917" a real professional movie. And like Spielberg's movie, "Saving Private Ryan" that didn't win Best Picture, which it should have, over that terrible love movie, again, that nobody saw.

Mike Fist was excellent as Riff and Bernardo character was awesome. The other supporting cast I thought all had the chops and the look. Like it was right out of 1938 NYC. To me I thought the second act was darker than the first. But its all good. Just my opinion

Using my mom's and my stolen identity. Most of the people here. She's using my stolen identity! Even Michael is. Robin is harassing my grandmother and George is using prince William's child's identity. She's been acting like a guy, dating me to steal my life. Constantly logs into my bank account at certain times. Like 7:40am this morning, when she wasn't in the apartment. I didn't login. Only last night. Constant harassment and aggression.

I haven't seen the whole "America" sequence, but from what I can tell, the original dance from the 1961 version was much much better. Sorry. Can't compete with Jerome Robbin's original choreography.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 2 года назад
I am sorry I have to respectfully disagree. The new choreography is way way better than the 1961 version. Justin Peck, who choreographed this one is one of the top choreographers currently in the business. The singing and dancing in this adaptation is far more dynamic and on point as all cast members are Broadway staged trained actors and not Hollywood actors who had to learn how to sing and dance a few months before the shooting. Spielberg’s camera flow and movement also helps a lot compared to the static shots of Robert Wise in the 1961 version.
@LuvTadnDixie
@LuvTadnDixie 2 года назад
@@gpapa31 Didn't see the whole sequence as I said, but the little clip I saw just now, I was disappointed. Jerome Robbins was a genius and there's no question about that. And the camera work during the dance sequences was phenomenal in the 1961 version as well. There are many parts I'm sure are better in this movie, but the Rita Moreno and George Chakiris dancing on the roof top in the 1961 was flawless. Every single moment of that small clip they just showed, although fine, is not as good as the original.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 2 года назад
@@LuvTadnDixie I was lucky to have seen the movie and Spielberg’s choice to film America on the streets instead of the rooftop proved to be a far more interesting and glorious set. Personally I loved Ariana’s dancing more than Moreno’s. Even Rita herself admitted that Ariana is a far way better dancer than she ever was. Btw I am a huge fan of the 1961 version, it was an integral part of my childhood but this new adaptation is just on another level. Especially the singing. Natalie Woods and Beymer’s vocals in the 1961 version were good at best. Ansel and Rachel absolutely kill it in this one. My only criticism is Ansel’s acting, I found it quite flat sometimes and not dynamic. Beymer was better I think, which doesn’t say much as he wasn’t really that good to begin with.

@@gpapa31 I saw a leaked clip of the Maria sequence, and it looked better than the original. Like I said, I'm sure there will be some things in this movie that are better. But I know "America" very well in the original. I don't really like all the busy-ness of the crowded street for "America" too much going on at once . . . I like the intimate roof top, it less distracting. And I guess what I didn't like in this very very small clip of America was that they didn't do the "Ha Ha Ha" when they hit the beat. Do you remember that? Rita Moreno and the girls picked up their skirts and went "Ha Ha Ha", LOL! Something like that. I miss that. So it's bugging the hell out of me. But I have to see the whole thing.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 2 года назад
@@LuvTadnDixie yes of course I remember. 😆 wait till you see it, I don’t want to spoil the surprises. This is just a small clip and it’s only part of the set America takes place on: The whole number moves around in the neighbourhoods, it’s so cool and refreshing and feels huge in the cinema. The colors of the dresses with the buildings in the background are so vivid and rich. But it is busy that’s for sure and loads of things happening so if you’re not into that vibe maybe won’t be to your liking. Steven’s and Kaminski’s cinematography is so dynamic and so fitting for a musical . As much as I liked Wise’s version and low level shooting I found that being static stole some of the dynamism that could have been there. Having said that the 1961 was filmed in 70mm and that makes for a much larger and impressive frame and aspect ratio. But I wouldn’t know since I saw it on TV as a kid back in the 80s. Still love it and it’s still my favourite musical of all time.
