It's called a phrased whistle. You're just singing words in the whistle register. Mariah Carey actually has done that before in her music. Listen to Bliss and the end of Fly Like a Bird. Even in the remix of her song Santa, she and Ariana sing the word "Santa", in the whistle register. It's very hard to do, and a lot harder than just whistling. You have to use a lot of air to do it right. Ariana's whistles are airier, in general, compared to Mariah's. But they still sound amazing. To anyone who can't do it, including me, it really sounds like it hurts, even though it's very impressive. But she knows what she's doing. She has full control of it.

The amount of breath control you need to even run in whistle, and she's phrasing a whole chorus in it. I also like that dark/raspy she has now , like Mariah did in 1997. Ariana is probably entering her "adult prime")

Whistling isnt healthy btw. It is impressive but it isn’t healthy so the air flowing like that its what’s unhealthy about whistling acting. Hes not wrong but it sounds good.

usually when people sing in whistle register it's just one note and that's extremely impressive in itself but the reason it sounds a little more airy here is because she actually saying the words and you have to let a lot of air through when in the pitch to get words to come out.

mariah is the og of doing phrased whistles and she has mastered it. ariana is new to phrased whistles so thats why hers are kinda breathy

My hair is my favorite song on her album. It is just lovely, and this live performance was pure perfection. She is using a raspy tone on purpose, you can tell because the album version is much clearer sounding.

fact: The whistle reg.. really can only be used by women who's normal talking voices are kinda deep.. (Mariah, Normani, Jennifer hudson, Minnie R, Ariana G, Kelly Clarkson etc... )

When she did the whistle part originally she said it just naturally came out the day she recorded it, but it might be harder to do it as perfectly live than in studio and edited!

Correction in the video with mariah carey and jennifer hudson, ari & mariah only did ‘the wistle tones’ NOT ‘phrased whistles’ there is a difference. Another fact mariah only does wistled tones or one word whistles or one phrase whistles in a song, NOT a whole chorus or verse. JUST ARI! 🌹

I think she chose to do it like that so she could get the words out with it. The studio version has less air in it. It’s incredibly difficult to get words out when singing anything in whistle notes. I’ve heard some say it sounded like she was in a falsetto or both falsetto and whistle but either way it’s impressive

That’s how a whistle note sounds. You’re using your breath. Whereas in a studio, they tune it to make it more clean. Mariah , Ariana and Minnie Riperton all are capable of enunciating while singing in these whistle registers. It’s a phrased whistle. Plus not to mention she’s sitting so this is very impressive.

You might like the sound of the phrased whistle tone better in the recorded version of the song. It’s less breathy and raspy and I don’t think she did it differently cuz she doesn’t know how to do it. Ari doesn’t do that. She just likes to switch it up with her vocals whenever she goes live and since she performs the songs more than once , she has live versions that sound like the actual song and live versions that don’t. This one was really impressive because I think it sounded even higher than the recorded and it’s really hard to add raspiness and breath to a whistle tone like a whistle tone alone is already really difficult. Although Mariah has done phrased whistle tones before I don’t think she ever sang a whole chorus in whistle tone and she never did it the same way ari did in this performance so I think this was just ari showing that the things she could do differently from others.
