iTunes bio: What do you do when things fall apart? If you’re Ariana Grande, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and head for the studio. Her hopeful fourth album, Sweetener-written after the deadly attack at her concert in Manchester-encouraged fans to stay strong and open to love (at the time, the singer was newly engaged to Pete Davidson). Shortly after the album’s release in August 2018, things fell apart again: Grande’s ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, died from an overdose in September and her relationship with Davidson ended a few weeks later.
Again, Grande took solace from the intense, and intensely public, heartache in songwriting, but this time things were different. thank u, next, mostly recorded over those tumultuous months, sees her turning inward in an effort to cope, grieve, heal and let go.

I personally thought that this record far exceeded Sweetener. I felt that that album was a culmination of far too many production styles, offsetting instrumentals that didn't match her voice, and just bad ideas overall. This was way more appealing and consistent. Although, I would maybe argue that Sweetener's highs outweigh a lot of these songs, but Sweetener didn't have many highs to begin with.

If it's getting critical acclaim, it's because it legitimately deserves it. Musical critics are tough. They don't just hand out good scores. She earned it. You just rush the kind of production that went into this album, or the lyrical content. Just because it came out not long after Sweetener doesn't make it rush, because it doesn't sound so. I respect everyone's right to an opinion, but at least have some logic behind it.

Vocally it's nice, she shines as she usually does in this area, but sometimes it is a little cringe when she tries too hard. Production is pretty good in my opinion for the most part, nothing that interesting, but not really problematic. Lyrically it is so weak. I'm surprised Ghostin' isn't on your best list since it's the only one that made me feel something, although lyrically it is kinda boringly put together as well. As someone who generally likes and respects Ariana Grande as an artist, it hurts to admit this. Ariana is getting increasingly lost in a feedback loop between her most loyal supporters who will validate nearly every last one of her artistic choices without engaging their critical faculties. Her "liking" stan tweets defending her work from valid criticism is a worrisome gesture, especially since celebrities should be above petty online shouting matches regarding the merits of their art. Considering that and how rushed her most recent album is (less than 7 months after 'Sweetener' and only two or so months of recording), there's a very real risk that Ariana will traverse a similar disappointing career trajectory as her most notable spiritual predecessor, Mariah Carey. Both of them having a promising start, but sliding towards mediocrity as they lacked competition to keep them on their toes, reached their commercial peaks, and creatively stagnated through their attempts at chasing modern trends to diminishing returns. Mariah underwent her slip in quality during the 2000s, while Ariana has been showing concerning signs of stumbling as of late 2018 starting with her 'Thank u, Next' era. The only real difference was that Ariana never had albums as great or consistently strong as 'Music Box', 'Daydream', and especially 'Butterfly'. If there is any consolation I can get out of this, at least Mariah Carey had a pretty solid return to form late last year with her 'Caution' album. With her level of talent, chances are that Ariana won't be stuck on this path forever, so there's still hope for a course correction.

I think the whole “separate the art from the artist” thing occurs when the music isn’t much about what the controversy is. No one separated that wack Kanye song with TI last year from his recent antics because that’s what the song was about. Thank u, next is the same way. It literally loses any meaning if you aren’t aware of who Ariana Grande is and what she’s been through.
@mariokarter13
@mariokarter13 5 лет назад
Separating the art from the artist is only possible when the artist isn't making themselves the art. When the lyrics are loaded with references to your personal life and the actual source of the controversy it's a constant reminder. Music is a lot like acting, you can see and enjoy the character and willingly suspend your disbelief, but some things will test and eventually break the illusion beyond repair. For example, if the actor in the suit of Barney the Dinosaur was convicted of tax evasion that would have less of an effect on your suspension of disbelief than if he was on the sex offender registry.
@MrOobling
@MrOobling 5 лет назад
The idea of separating the art from the artist is and always has been completely ridiculous. Whether or not the album makes a direct reference to the artists life, it should be a reflection of the artist's beliefs, ambitions and experiences. If the art is not this, it is crap art. Musicians or not like actors at all in this respect. @@mariokarter13

Me personally, I love how sonically cohesive the album feels (especially compared to the all-over-the-place Sweetener). And this cohesive sound that Ariana is working with - it's pretty special on the pop landscape right now; not many others are working with this. It's a cool sound that catches my ear, more than Sweetener (which, as you said, has already been done since the early 2000s). Also, each song is quite catchy and melodic. If this album is getting critical acclaim, it's not for nothing. Music critics are usually quite tough on artists peaking at their career all the way from Drake to Cardi B and more. I think this album is really cool because its more than just an album, its a personal diary for Ariana and she's really growing into her voice. Addressing the death of a loved one, parting ways with another, emotional ups and downs, and life in the spotlight and the mental effect that has had on her isn't deep. The kind of things she addresses on the album are very personal and relatable. That's nothing short of deep. Say what you want to the songs, themselves, but saying it's not deep is just nonsense; borderline ignorant even.
@kayfimt7769
@kayfimt7769 5 лет назад
Bex G totally disagree. Simply approaching or attempting a weighty/deep topic does not make something deep. In fact this is the definition of bathos, when media attempts to be serious or profound but fails and comes off as lightweight. The fact that Grande references serious content does not by itself make the work serious or deep.

Fun fact: 'Thank U, Next' was initially supposed to be the last track on the album and another song 'Remember' at track #11, however Ariana decided to remove it at the last minute due to it being "too personal" according to her - 'Break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored' was then added in its place. Which is a shame, would've like to hear "Remember" - that and Break up with your girlfriend just isn't a very good song IMO.

Personally, my favorite album of hers still is (and probably will always be) "Yours Truly". There's something in this project that shines among other pop productions even today. Babyface's approach and the inspiration in the 90's vibe just matched perfectly with Ariana's voice. I'm really surprised that some fans consider it one of her weakest albums (like WHAT??). Meanwhile, there's no album of hers that I dislike. Even "My Everything", such a messy album with great songs, is average in relation to other productions. I also enjoyed "Sweetener" and felt that it was an improvement in her career (although I am aware of the ups and downs in Pharell's production - "The light is coming", for instance, is an absolute nightmare). Finally, "Thank u, next" is not a bad album. I agree with you, maybe it's her weakest to date, but it's highlights are kinda whorty. I mean, the production and the trap influence are pure lazyness. It feels like her team is trying to grasp and surf on the trending waves of nowadays hip-hop music without any selfconsciousness. However, Ariana's vocals, the use of instrumental arrangment (the violins, for instance) and the lyrical content are aspects that outshine the flaws of this album, or maybe most of them. Moreover, it's pretty good to see Ariana breaking the usual lack of personality in pop music. Her art is becomming even more authentic and personal, which is great. Of course the lyrics are not perfect (can someone take "7 rings" and "buwygib" seriously?), but they can be really promising (like in "ghostin", "fake smile", "needy" etc.). Now, it's time to wait until her next project, hoping for the better, because Ariana Grande has the potential to be not only good, but one of the greatest in her generation.

It's entirely possible to separate the art from the artist because the art is a performance. It's not dissimilar from acting, how the actor and the character are separate. The only exception is when the art and the artist clash in a way that's irreconcilable. The tough hardcore gangsta rapper is a cowardly snitch. The sensual R&B singer has a rape dungeon. The voice of a generation is lipsynching an anonymous session musician. It depends on the artist, what they've done, and how close it is to their art.

I enjoyed the production, vocals, and time length of the album. The rest was your regular mainstream pop album that I forget. Half was pretty good and the other half was typical mainstream stuff. My expectations were pretty low so I was kinda impressed. I don’t listen to her music religiously.

I’d say it’s her second best work with Dangerous Woman coming in first. Sweeteners production is ultimately what ruined it for most people besides maybe a couple songs. But i will argue that those couple songs on Sweetener did surpass every song on Thank You, Next such as No Tears Left To Cry and God Is A Woman. But overall i believe that Thank You, Next is the better album. It felt more cohesive and to the point. I guess you could say Sweetener was technically cohesive but all the songs produced by pharrell felt like it was from a totally different album than the others. Overall i would give Thank You, Next a solid 8/10.

In truth this album looking at it since its only aged some days I can see people's points. Considering the fact Sweetener pissed so many fans due to an unexpected use of experimentation they "didn't want" and the counter point album is damage control from that still lingering from 2018's album. However, one thing I feel he may have over exaggerated on was the "undercooking". It's true she has found in the past 6 years it being Hell to find complimenting sounds to her voice, tone, and emoting. But the album's best moments still stand tall even when you can hear the rushed sound in areas vibe to it. It goes without saying she's carrying this album by far and taking it far even if it seems performative. And lyrically she's done far better then most of her prior work.

Tbh Sweetener was a great album it was fun and the different sound for Ari work IMO. TUN is pretty good tbh it is simple and short. Not trying to hard but at the same time talking about her life right now. Also 7 rings doesn't fit the album at all should have never been a single or on the album

Let's face it Max Martin is now washed up, this is probably his only attempt at trying to get another number 1 to the plethora of cheap hit singles he's gotten in the last decade, mostly done with Dr. Luke. Hell he's trying his hand on Broadway with his new musical "And Juliet". Every time he's on it just brings a whole album to a grind to listen to, probably why I enjoy Pharrell collabs on sweetener more. He's been in the game as long as Martin but still brings a sense of groove and fun to any track he's on no matter how cringey. Final note, Max might be one of the best producers in pop, but is beaten by light years by Paul McCartney. if Ariana made this entire album with just Tommy Brown it would probably be one of my top picks of the year.
@ohnothimagen224
@ohnothimagen224 5 лет назад
@Lunar Orbit Paul McCartney can make entire albums all by himself doing all the instruments (real ones), all the vocals and even the artwork for it. Paul McCartney has been doing this for over 60 years and counting, and and yes Paul McCartney wasn't much of the producer type in his later years he usually had help from George Martin (no relation) and most recently Greg Krustin but compare that to Max, who in the early nineties was in a failing hair metal band who then turn to pop to have the success that he should of had if he got popular with his band. It's all about who has more character and charisma and none other than McCartney has it more.

I said most of this in my review (on my channel), but i think this is great album. Every track except "7 Rings" was great. NASA was my favorite, but gostin & bloodline are fun too. I was really critical of the singles, but again, taking exception to 7 Rings", the singles grew on me over time. Sweetner wasnt experimental, and if you think it was, I'm sorry for you, but while ALL her albums are standard, they make up for it with being fun, and this album is the epidemy of this. The production was great. The flow was seamless. And everything was damn catchy. But, looking back on lyrics, the personality we see in the lyrics makes me realize why she is single.

I've listened to this album like 30 times, and while it has grown on me, I still think I would rate it like a 3.5/10 for the overall track, and in an album full of bangers, this track stands out a particulary bad.

Mind you, I don’t think the album should be attacked for how quickly it was made. Spontaneous, unfiltered writing and recording has its place, and I wouldn’t want to argue against it. That it didn’t work here doesn’t meant it doesn’t work ever.

Mark (or Voltorb idk who's in charge of the white text!) I'm not sure about that annotation that says "Separate the art from the artist is something ppl only do when the artist is controversial". I think that isn't true at all and it only seems true because it only sparks outrage when done with people like Kodak Black or 6ix9ine, and because the defenders of said artists feel the need to be a lot more vocal because they come under the most fire (deservedly). I think that most people might have a few faves (for me that's Taylor Swift) whose artistic progression they're invested in and beyond that they just appreciate good art from whoever. Like I enjoy a great deal of Halsey songs (I get the feeling she'd hate being the example for this xD) and I really couldn't care less about her pretensions to being alternative or her grandiose visions or whatever, I just know Colors good, Eastside good, Bad At Love good, Strangers good, Without Me is bad don't worry I'm with you there, Alone very good, Closer good, etc. and can enjoy those songs as standalone pieces.

Music should live with context. This is why I don't agree with "separating the art from the artist" (aside from it being a very, very weak excuse for music lovers and critics to defend otherwise terribe artist). A good artist can't be separated from their music, because their music is clearly a big part of their life. This is why I think thank u, next works. It's that week and a half of Ariana's life that was messy, depressing, and confusing, and that's exactly what the album transmits: a young, rich superstar going through a trash time with absolutely no idea what's coming next. While some songs don't work (Break Up & 7 Rings), most songs feel so sincere and known, that it is hard to argue against them. At the very least, Ariana found her lane making whatever she wants, with a group of friends, and definitely stopped caring about whatever people say. I can assure you this will be her most remember album. Not because it's her biggest, but because it's her roughest. Sweetener was Ariana putting on a smile. Thank U, Next was her ditching it.

This is way better than sweetener. My Everything will always be her best album to me, but I feel like this album matches her voice and style way more. Sweetener wasn’t bad but I just wasn’t into it. The production was was excellent I will say but It just didn’t click for me. Even though this album was “rushed”, she just seemed for into it. I think her focusing on her self really proved to help because this album is the first one I can listen to on repeat since My Everything. And break up with your girlfriend is a banger idc what anybody says. Although she does say “yuh” to much and it gets distracting.

I found this album to be even more personal than Sweetener, which felt deliberately artificial in an attempt to bring herself out of certain depression. Lyrically it's also her best with clear and concise lines and apt metaphors describing her feelings towards Pete and Miller. I think it deserves the acclaim though I do agree it could have stayed in the oven a little longer.
