Arid bilge/Dry bilge alternative

This is a mock up and trial version of a Arid bilge/Dry bilge alternative. I got the idea from an article on a Catalina forum. I really like the Arid bilge system with its 8 different channels of suction. The price is just prohibitive for me and my scale of operation. The Dry Bilge System appears to be a great alternative since it is about 1/3 of the cost of the Arid Bilge. It is still a considerable expense for a relatively simple product. The real concern for me is the repair and replacement costs of costly products. With simple and inexpensive home built solutions the repair and replacement costs are easier to account for.

The commercial versions of this have something like a brake bleeder bottle in between the pickup and the pump, so any back-flow is caught for the next pump cycle. Also, not tightening the wall plate screws so tight would not deform the sponge as much and give you a better seal on the bottom of the bilge. I think I would swap out the plastic switch plate for a stainless steel one, so the weight would help hold it flat to the bilge floor.

Or create a small slit in sponge material to let the washer sit against the scrubby material, so sponge is not deformed but it is securely held in place.

I wish you’d discussed the assembly to the switch plate.

the switch plate is actually a wall plate blank. i drilled a hole just big enough to start the pipe threads and then screwed it in. i cut a dish sponge to size and held it tight to the open end of the plastic fitting with screws and washers. www.lowes.com/pd/SharkBite-1-4-in-Push-to-Connect-x-1-4-in-Mip-dia-90-Degree-Male-Elbow-Push-Fitting/1000192667

Really nice. Did you install this in Sea Hawk? Also, how is the discharge overboard hooked up? Does it tee into the existing bilge hose somehow? I checked out the Catalina link and they do not say. Thanks for passing on your knowledge Josh

The Catalina page suggests teeing in to the emergency bilge pump discharge hose. No I have not installed it.... Yet.

I love it... Nice video... I wish however you had put a link to the push connect (shark bite) fittings you used... I cant find anything!

Do you have the link to the article? I don’t see it here anywhere. This is exactly what I’m looking for in my Catalina 30. Thank you for a great video!

About the dry bilge? Or in general? Sorry, guess I've just been busy or maybe I didn't think anybody was that interested. I have lots of different interests spread all over. My latest is open source software defined network routers. pfSense to be exact. I'll be putting together a batch of mead shortly. Per your request I'll upload a video of my means of harvesting honey. How's that?

did you cut a cavity in the sponge for the threaded end of the fitting? What did you use to plug the bottom of the fitting (a cap, a cork?) and did you drill out little holes on the sides or is the entire fitting sucking into the sponge.. ? Did you cut off the threaded portion so it wouldn't go all of the way through the sponge? I built one of these but it isn't sucking anything out of the sponge (not enough to self prime) so I am figuring it's the pump and have ordered the pump you showed to see if it works better

I kept it very simple and just drilled a hole big enough for the fitting to thread. I didn't even cut threads! I just force threaded the fitting. It didn't protrude too much on the back side and the sponge is just pressed tight against the open end of the fitting. If I recall the hose is 3/8ths OD and 1/4 ID so there really isn't much flow. The pump is a positive displacement diaphragm pump and is advertised to have 10 feet of lift. This means it does not need primed and can be mounted up to 10 feet above the water it is pumping. It can also run dry indefinitely without damaging the pump. If you tried to use a typical bilge pump they are centrifugal pumps and require the suction of the pump to be submerged before they pump. Other pumps like the whale gusher have a much capacity and larger suction. I think they might have a more difficult time self-priming since the larger diameter hose may allow air to slip past the water... 🤷‍♂️.

@@muckleyj I used a small diaphragm pump with 3/8" hose to barbs but it wouldn't suck enough to get water and start actually pulling. I think the pump just didn't have much lift. Now I'm going to switch to the pump shown and see if it makes a difference. I suspect it will.

Would be cool if it ran for 2-3 min automatically AFTER the bilge pump stops.

With the timer it just runs for a predetermined amount of time each hour. Technically it DOES run after the bilge pump!

The fitting you used on the plate, sharkbite type fitting, where do I get those? Have you got a link to see them online?

I got it at Ace Hardware. It conveniently had threads and with an appropriately sized hole it threaded in.

Does this system self prime? Do you have an update on how well it worked?

Yes it self primes. No I haven't installed yet....in progress.
