Whats the best snowblower under 1000?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
That's not the right question to ask. I don't know what type surface you have on your driveway, how big is the area you want to clear, where you live, if you get drifts, heavy/wet snow, etc. Let me know more and I can help you find the best snowblower for you that fits your budget. By-The-Way, the prices of snowblowers have gone up in the last three years so the $1000 snowblower is now around $1300.

The turning capability of the Toro is far superior than that of the Ariens. you sound like you are trying to be politically correct but if you look at the spec's the Toro is a better machine.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
You are correct. I don't like to cut down one machine over the other because each machine is designed for a specific user. Certain buyers want the features of the Toro and others, the Ariens. My job is to help you find the best snowblower for you. That said, Specifically, if you spent an hour driving the Toro and an hour driving the Ariens you would quickly realize the Ariens is much easier to steer.

@@PaulSikkema The point that I wanted to make is you could explain the pro's and cons a little better, that would make your video's un judge mental, Still your perspective but with a pro's and cons approach and explain that certain buyers and certain environments are what you are basing your critique on. I like watching your video's keep it up!

Excellent review Mr Sikkema! Based on your previous review, last year I went to purchase the Ariens Pro Rapid Track 28 at my local dealer. Unfortunately, they were sold out and I purchased the wheel model Pro 28 hydro instead. No regrets at all, it’s a phenomenal machine and works perfectly for my needs. I grew up using a 1960’s Ariens 5 hp unit and inherited my Dad’s 1984 Ariens ST1032 that finally wore out which necessitated my purchase last year. I suspect that my new current Ariens will outlast me. Your reviews and demonstrations are second to none and show prospective buyers exactly what is relevant for making a sound purchase.

Not a deal breaker but the cable management under the dash of the Ariens look cleaner. I like the way Ariens thought out of the box with the RapidTrack system 👌.

I own an Ariens Deluxe with the larger engine and I love it. The dealer carries both Ariens and Honda. Comparing the two, feature for feature, the Honda was nearly $1,000 more. Honda does make a good product but you do pay for the name.
@billz410
@billz410 Месяц назад
I’ve ‘test-driven’ both of these machines. I think the Ariens is the easiest to turn. The trigger steering on the Toro incorporates two more cables prone to stretching, breaking, needing adjustment. But because I can get a ‘used-twice’ Toro that is as close to new as possible for $2,000.00, I’ll probably go with the Toro. I have spent 5 years with a little Toro 724 SnowMaster, and that thing performs WAY better than most people give it credit for as soon as they see it’s a single-stage design. It has really been an impressive unit. Thank you Paul for your amazing reviews over the years.

Paul, I enjoyed the video thoroughly. Thank you for taking the time to make the comparisons. I live in central NH. Snow conditions vary wildly. I own a Honda HS1132TAS that I purchased in roughly 2000, and often ask a great deal of it. It’s pro’s: Still fires off with a pull or two and runs like it did when new. The build is seemingly bombproof. It’s traction is extraordinary, and the auger rarely climbs.

I have to first say thanks to you for your great and very detailed and in depth videos. Living in Michigan, the weatherman can't predict the weather 12 hours out to save their life. 5 years ago we had snow waist deep to a tall Indian, this year we've had 2 snowfalls that require getting out the snowblower for a total of about 5". My driveway is 35' wide, 35' long then it has a 15' long taper that takes it down to 24' wide for the next 30' out to the road. I've been using a 22", 7.5hp single stage for the last 7 years. At least every year it goes thru a set of flights and a scraper bar. Those replacements just keep going up every year. Our last storm the snow about 4" and was a little damp and my single stage would barely throw it 10' to the side. That's when I had enough. I started my research and narrowed it down to a Honda, Ariens, or a Toro. I wanted a track model, hydrostatic drive and a 28". I liked the track drive system of the Toro, but REALLY liked the Ariens. I decided on the Ariens Pro 28 Rapid Track. Little too much sticker shock so I decided to downgrade my option to the Platinum 28 SHO. I scoured the internet and had almost no luck finding one. I had a complete bonehead moment and forgot I had an Ariens dealer 2 miles from my house. I gave them a call and the only tracked unit they had was a Pro 32 Rapid Track. This unit isn't a go big or go home, its go BIGGER or go home! The dealer gave me an OTD, delivered to my house price on it you'd be an idiot to turn down. It looks to be an extremely well built machine. Other reviewers have posted that it is built like a tank. That's an understatement. You could storm the beaches of Normandy with this thing! The chute controls move WAY easier than I thought. The Rapid Track conversion from track to wheel mode and/or back is really easy. Disengage the transmission is easy and even being brand new it is much easier to move around manually than I thought it would be. The engine starts very easy and the throttle controls, choke, fuel shutoff and even the key are easy to get to. Paul, everything you said about this Pro unit model is dead on. I watched so many videos and read so many reviews I cant remember if you said it or not, but it was said you buy one of these and itll be the last snowblower you'll ever buy. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I could believe it. It's a LOT of overkill for the amount of snow we get here for the last few years, but when that changes and we get the du.pings like we used to, I'll be ready and itll be worth every penny, as long as I dont have any issues. However, my local dealer reassured me if I do have any, I am not to hesitate to call them and they will come and pick it up and make it right. Another reason I like to give my business to my local business instead of the box stores. Again, a BIG THANKS to you for your great videos and helping me make my decision on an Ariens!!!
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
thank you for the detailed explanation! Yes, you now have the biggest, baddest track drive snowblower in Michigan! It's hard to explain how well-built the RapidTraks are: Yours is designed to clear 40-50 driveways everytime it snows and still last 20 years. On you driveway it will last long enough to give to your grandkids... You are 100% correct. Finding a good dealer in your area is the key. It makes owning a snowblower or lawn mower from them the best choice.

@Drewg351

I find instead of lifting up on the machine you can just barely touch the lower track bar and it'll lock it in the downward, "dig in" position. I find it engages fully better this way. I'm not talking about stepping hard with all your weight or anything like that. You obviously wouldn't want to do that, nor need too. It simply takes the lightest pressure and it locks in place. I absolutely ❤️ this machine. It's a beast.

My only experience with a track system is the Ariens you tested here. I had a Murry previously. I purchased it because it can be setup to "dig" into packed snow. Found out it also climbs curbs easily which is helpful for what I clear. It is nice that it operates like a wheeled snowblower when using you don't need the other features. I'm sure the Toro is a fine machine, but I am very happy with my Ariens.

Excellent comparison!! Unbelievably thorough. I have a commercial Toro Powershift 1031 I purchased back in 1993. Still running strong! Two things that I really like about that machine are the auger and drive. The auger is a steel drum with the solid blade wrapped around the drum. You can hit a brick, or a frozen newspaper hidden under the snow and you won't damage the auger at all. The second thing is the Powershift. When activate, it releases the rear axle, and allows it to pivot back an additional 6 inches or so. With the rear wheels in that Powershifted position it digs deep. I can do dips on the handlebars, at 260lbs, and the auger still rests solidly on the pavement without lifting. I'm curious if anyone nowadays makes an auger like my old Toro, and I'm also curious if these machines with tracks and their systems will dig as hard as the Powershift setup. I may be in the market for a second machine, and from your comparison, I'd lean towards the Ariens (I need that taller auger opening for the 2 to 3 got snowfalls)....but, I'd like a machine that's at least 31" wide or preferably wider.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
The Toro Powershift was the best snowblower back in the early 90's. (some will argue the BobCat sidewinder was better) No one uses the solid drum anymore. While it was tough, it really was horrible moving snow into the impeller. Todays open auger flight design puts a lot more snow through the machine and aerates the snow so it throws a lot better and farther. The Toro and Ariens tracked machines here will dig in like the Powershift. Both that a "dig-in" mode where all the weight is shifted to the front housing and the very rear of the track. It gives you the same type of traction as the Powershift but with just a small lever it releases so you can turn it easily. I show this feature in the video. Ariens makes a 32 inch version of the RapidTrak.

Thank you for this very comprehensive and informative video Paul, it seems Toro and Ariens have virtually perfected these machines. The hydro static drive is a big improvement over the disk and friction wheel system which inevitably gets wet due to not being sealed up well on top. Have to stop you at the gear boxes. I work part time at a Toro dealer/small engine repair shop in the rocky mtns of Idaho. We get all types of snow and lots of it. The Toro has a much better built gear box than the Ariens. Toro uses all steel gears of which we have NEVER had to service in the thousands of machines out there in our valley. We have however replaced gear boxes and gear sets in the ariens as they use a brass on steel gear set that will wear over time no matter how gentle you are with it. If i remember right its about a 400 dollar fix. Toro is the hands down better machine when it comes to the major conponent longevity. We rarely see the Toros for anything but regular maintenance.

They sell for about $1,500.00 Canadian in 2022. It has NEVER clogged. By far the Toro outperformed the Honda. You buy a snowblower for performance and reliability. The Honda was a big disappointment in performance. The best snowblower in memory was an Aries 8 hp two stage that my dad had in the late 60's. Nothing stopped it! I also own an Ariens 11-28 and it's been stellar. I also owned a 824 Ariens. I needed a larger machine to take care of my large driveway and elderly neighbors. Friends at work purchased the 9hp Craftsman for the price, with supposed identical specifications. The Craftsman weighed less than 200 pounds, the Ariens closer to 300 pounds. The first deep snowfall, three of the four Craftsman machines purchased required the discharge chutes to be replaced because the plastics didn't like cold weather. I would like to find a direct replacement Honda engine for the Tecumseh, as parts for Tecumseh dry up. The Snow King was a great engine, but the garbage gasoline reeks havoc on the fuel system. I resorted to using 100LL aviation fuel to get away from ethanol containing gasoline.

I live where you need a snowblower. I wish people would quit talking about snowblower speed. When you really need your snowblower……….speed doesn’t matter. What matteres is how much snow they move. People keep selling you on speed of machines………how much snow can they move? That’s what matters. I would give my top 3 forward gears for a faster reverse.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 2 года назад
Under the dash, there is a threaded rod attached to the speed selector. You can adjust that to give you more reverse speed. BUT it messed up the neutral position and the forward speed notches so be careful when you engage the transmission again. I don't recommend it to many people because it can be unsafe. This works for both friction disk and hydro trannys.

Excellent review on them. I have the ariens pro 420 efi wheeled version and the toro 1432. Both good machines. Wanted efi after froze my 1028 the previous season and more power. I use them on 30-40 plus houses with large driveways and lots of sidewalk each time it snowed last year. I alternated machines. The ariens was used for 2 snow events at the end of the previous year. Broke an auger bolt and then a month later the auger gear went on my 1028 the previous year. probably related to the stupid 2" shale rock that snapped the bolt initially but it got used hard for a few snow falls. Few things on each current ones which is the same for atleast the toro. The auger brake lever has been replaced a couple time on the ariens and the shoot as you mentioned doesnt go down enough. Doesnt seem like much but when doing close driveways and directing away from neighbors homes and gas meters....its necessary. Toro, broke the things i was told wouldnt break on the 1028. But the 1432 only broke the aluminum rod for the drive lever. The light position for the toro sucks when blowing to the right...snow coveres it and with both machines...engine heat causes buildup around the chutes and thus creates ice. Id buy either one. I prefer my toro disc drive for busting through the plowed driveway ends but the ariens hydro is faster when less load.

The are both the same height and most people say both of them are too high. Both have the controls up on top of the dash. The Toro TRX and Ariens rapidtrak are still the best. Toro has made no changes. Ariens has added a bunch of models and they are all basically the same as this one but with more accessories. Better lighting, electric thumb-controlled chute, bigger gas tanks etc. For example has additions you never thought you needed on a snowblower - but it allows you to clear snow anywhere, anytime and any amount.

Hello Paul, how would you compare the Cub Cadet Pro 3X with 420 cc with wheels with these two snowblowers? Is the Cub Cadet a worthy competitor? Or is the Ariens still the best? Is the three stages a better system?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
I don't know. I've been ignoring the Pro versions. Why? Because the 3X regular are not better than the Ariens and Toro 2-stage machines - they are just different. The regular 3X has a habit of breaking shear pins and throwing snow all over the place. I have the 2X 30 MAX heree and it's a good machine - similar to the Ariens Deluxe 30 and Toro 1030.

Hi Paul, what is the max speed forward? Are snowblowers on tracks slower that on wheels? I ask this because I have some properties and walk/transport the snowblowers there. I am looking to buy the Ariens 926078 Professional Rapidtrak (28") 420cc Snow Blower, one think I like about the tracks is that there are no flat tires.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
The Ariens RapidTrak is faster than most people can walk. The Toro TRX is faster than anything other than the RapidTrak.. Yes track drives are much slower than wheeled snowblowers BUT/Except the RapidTrak is just as fast as any wheeled unit. Lift the RapidTrak treads up into the wheel mode and it is easier to move to the next property than a wheeled unit. rewatch the video from 21:30 to 25:00 to see what I'm talking about. Yes, no flat tires and with the RapidTrak you have all the traction you need for tough spots and the flexibility of a wheeled unit when you don't need it.

I have a 16530EXLT HSQV - it’s been a tank but not their best design. I’m thinking of updating (may not ‘upgrade’ per say, I may buy a new one. Possibly smaller width, and not sure about wheels or tracks) We do get a lot of heavy snow in Atlantic Canada, and it’s get wet and heavy, then re-freezes, so I want a blower up to the task. @PaulSikkema 3 года назад
While Honda makes a quality machine and has a "rabid" bunch of brand loyalists the current machines are not in the sale league as the RapidTrak. The RapidTrak is a true commercial snowblower designed to clear snow faster and last longer than any other walk-behind currently on the market. In fact, commercial users like the Ski Resorts are dumping the Hondas as fast as they can and buying the RapidTrak. You have to move up to the HSS1332ATD to get the same performance as a 28 inch Ariens. The Ariens PROFESSIONAL 32 HYDRO RAPIDTRAK beats the Honda in every metric but still costs less. The 32 inch Ariens RapidTrak has quite a bit better performance than the HSS1332ATD Engines: Honda 389 cc , Ariens 420 cc, Throwing distance: Honda 56 feet, Ariens 60 feet Capacity (Published): Honda 82 tons per hour, Ariens 90 tons per hour Drive: Honda Hydro with slow speed, low clearance 2 point tracks. Ariens Hydro with high clearance, high speed RapidTrak. The RapidTrak with the commercial AutoTurn is so much easier to use and faster than the HSS1332ATD. Handles wet/heavy snow: Honda with chute modification kit, Ariens can handle any type of snow including slush. Where they are made: Honda, Ariens snowblowers are made in the U.S.A. Honda AX, Ariens AX engines are made overseas.

1. The Honda 28 and 32 inch throw snow very far - but the Toro in this video throws it just as far and has a lot more capacity. 2. The Ariens is all about capacity. It only throws snow 40-50 feet but it has over 20% more capacity than the Honda and costs less. 3. The Honda is very comparable to the Husqvarna st430t in size, capacity, and speed. @@PaulSikkema I would like to get done with snow blowing as soon as possible to get back to my coffee or hot chocolate here in Wisconsin lol. So I don't mind getting more machine then I really need. I think the Cub Cadet 3 stage looks good at first glance but online there are a lot of complaints about things breaking. It seems the reliability of the brand in general is not top tier. Now you confirm my suspicion that the 3 stage design isn't worth much. So I narrowed it down to Ariens, Toro and Honda. Honda gets a 5/5 for reliability by consumer reports and I think Toro does too. Ariens is 4/5. I assume all of them are reliable. The Auger and Impeller sizes on the comparable models are bigger and the same size on the Toro and Ariens compared to Honda which I think you have mentioned and implied that those brands move more snow then the Honda as a result. My wife plans to use the machine so maneuverability is a factor. I forgot to mention that our driveway has an inclined so I'm thinking a track model would be good insurance. Your explanation of the Rapidtrak system has swayed me toward Ariens over Toro. I also like having EFI on an Ariens, I don't think the Toro comparable models have it. You mentioned electric track actuator on the Kraken and Mountaineer models. That peaked my interest as well. Although it turns out the Kraken is the only one with the actuator and unfortunately it is very expensive at $4700. Still it is tempting but if you saw my driveway you would probably laugh at me considering a Kraken. I can't help but like cool and very capable machines. Anyway, with your help I think I have narrowed it down the Ariens, Alpine, Mountaineer or Kraken models. thanks again for some great information. Oh, one more thing. I own a DR Brush mower. I checked out their snow blowers online. They sell a 30" wheeled unit with a 420 cc engine for $1699. That does seem like a very good value. I guess I have another question though. I see Ariens says their 420cc engines have 21 pd/ft of torque and I saw a website saying Honda's has 9. Do you think the Honda engines have less torque than Ariens? Thanks again.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 2 дня назад
The Ariens RapidTrak is much easier to use than the Toro Power TRX. Why? The AutoTurn on the Ariens is easier to get used to over trigger steering. The Ariens is also balanced so you can easily push down on the handles and turn the unit. The Toro is front heavy and you wife may not be able to lift the front to turn it easily. The electric actuator is cool but it's not really needed - even on the Kraken. How easy is it to turn? Watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g9V9LG22Ejg.html DR snowblowers were made in China the last time I checked. @PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Год назад
If you get more than 12 inches at a time, the snow is always really wet and heavy or you get drifts where the snow is so hard you can walk over the drifts the RapidTrak is a good choice. It increases the traction 2-3 times a wheeled unit. I also like the balance of the RapidTrak. When you get ready to turn around, push down on the handles so the tracks lock into the "wheel" mode. At this point the snowblower is balanced so there is no weight on the handles. (anyone can turn the snowblower) Once you make your turn just pull the lever under the right handle and the tracks drop back down for the most traction.

@PaulSikkema Год назад
That's a great idea! In the meantime I suggest looking at a 2015 or newer Ariens or a Toro Power Max only. Ariens - I strongly suggest ONLY looking at one that has been stored inside. Snowblowers don't have sealed transmission cases and the internal components tend to rust if left outside. Also, older Ariens tend to have a brittle friction wheel and that's a $200 repair if you can't do it yourself. Always start them before you buy it. If it won't start that's usually a new carb ($250) Models older than 2015 don't have AutoTurn and can be hard to turn. Have the owner run the auger/impeller and look at the front end. The auger should run smoothly and the unit should not shake. (bent impeller or bad bearings.) The auger/impeller should also be quiet - no squeals or scraping sounds.

My go-to track drive is the Ariens RapiTrak. The Pro 28 is easier to use than every other snowblower on the market and it will handle snow as well or better than any other brand's "top-of-the-line" machine. The control cables don't freeze. The auger and drive cables are not sheathed and the chute cables are mounted so water can't get into them. They are all commercial grade, heavy-duty cables. How do the tracks compare to wheels with chains on a steep driveway? I have wheels with chains on my current blower, and sometimes it is a struggle to find traction when going up the hill. Do the tracks do better, or is it six of one, half a dozen of the other? I really enjoy your side by side comparisons. They are very helpful!
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 2 года назад
Chains work well for hard packed snow and ice. They dig into that stuff and give you more traction than the snow tires. On Blacktop and cement chains don't give you any advantage - in fact they give you less traction than the snow tires because the metal just slides on the hard surface. They do help on frozen gravel. Chains are a leftover idea from when we didn't have snow tires and snowblowers used smooth lawnmower style tires. (Look back to the 60's & 70's snowblowers to see the tires I mention) Tracks put more surface area on the ground than chains. The tracks and the extra weight of these snowblowers give you considerably more traction than tires with chains.

Toro DOES use shear pins. I've busted a couple on mine(when I had it). And if Toro doesn't officially want to call them shear pins, fine that's just semantics. But, they do shear! I know it first hand, and so does my Toro dealer who sold me(and many others) the shear pins, after we cursed our heads off in the middle of snow clearing thinking we didn't need shear pins on reserve. Toro owners: those bolts will shear at times. Do yourself a favour and keep some extras on hand.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
Not to argue with your dealer, but those are grade 5 bolts that hold the auger to the shaft!. Shear pins are much softer and designed to break so they are easy to remove. Shear pins actually have grooves cut in them so they break in a certain spot and "most of the time" eject from the hole in the auger shaft and auger. That said, I'm glad they broke for you without damaging the auger hole itself. It sure beats having the dealer replace the belts because you got something stuck in the machine.

I have a couple of suggestions. Each one is a little wider so it won't take you as long but they still have the throwing distance of your Deluxe 24 - or longer. All of these will be as easy to use as the Deluxe 24. 1. Deluxe 28 SHO. Bigger motor, wider front bucket so you can get done faster. Special SHO impeller so it will throw up to 55 feet. 2. Deluxe 30. 30 inches wide. larger motor. Throws up to 50 feet. 3. Platinum 30 SHO. 30 inches, huge motor. SHO impeller. This model will handle the 30 inches without a whimper and throw it 55 feet. One advantage it this one has levers for both the chute and deflector on the dash so you don't have to reach over the dash to turn the chute. It's balanced very well so it's no harder to use than the Deluxe 24. This model will cut down on your turns and get the job done 25-30% faster than the Deluxe 24.

Yes, that is a great idea! There are three versions of the RapidTrak. 1. Platinum 28 SHO RapidTrak. 2. Pro 28 RapidTrack. 3. Pro 32 RapidTrak. I recommend the Platinum 28 SHO - Why? 1. It's the lightest of the three versions. (and the least expensive) My guess is it's only about 30 lbs more than the Deluxe 24. 2. When the RapidTrak is in wheel mode it's almost perfectly balanced so it's very easy to turn. 3. This version also has an on-the-dash chute control. You don't have to reach over the dash like you do on the Deluxe 4. When you put the RapidTrak in the track position it goes straight. That means when you are doing your long driveway all you really have to do is hold the handles. It's also no ttoo much effort to make small course corrections by just moving the handles With a little practice I have a feeling you will like it just as well as the Deluxe 24.

The cons: the auger is worn and should likely be replaced. The lamp is anemic. It’s pretty strong-willed and requires the operator to hold on tight. You’ve got to remind it who the alpha is in the relationship. On dry surfaces, it’s difficult to move ford and backward and impossible to turn. And finally, it eats its proprietary sheer bolts like candy. The Ariens appears to be a machine I might consider replacing it with when necessary. But I have no idea what Honda’s current lineup looks like. Your thoughts?

The current Honda HSS1332AT / HSS1332ATD (D is for electric start) is about 6 years old. About 4 years ago they changed the chute so it wouldn't plug as often clearing heavy/wet snow. Ariens has two 32 inch models that compare. The Mountaineering and the Kraken. Both have about 30% more capacity than the Honda. They both have 420cc EFI engines that are outputting at least 15 HP (no one will list HP anymore) What this means is you can easily clear 12 inches plus as fast as you can walk and of course can handle deeper snow if needed. They both throw snow up to 60 feet and won't clog on heavy/wet snow. Both have 12 volt onboard electric start. They both use a commercial grade hydro that is a lot stronger than the other dual hydros on the market. The AutoTurn makes it very easy to turn - even with the engine turned off. There is a hydro release lever so you can roll it around with the engine off. (Though I still use a furniture mover if I have to move it more than a few feet) It has all the traction you'll need and just pulling a small lever you have the maneuverability of a wheeled unit. The handles are 1 1/4 inch square tube. The new Electric chute control is FAST and the thumb switch is right by the right hand. You don't have to take you hand off the handle to use it. The Mountaineering has great LED lighting but the Kraken has over-the-top 360 degree lighting - including a spotlight on the top of the chute deflector... The only time I've ever broken a shear bolt on an Ariens was when I stuck it in a chain link fence. With normal maintenance the Ariens RapidTrak will easily give you 20 years plus. Spend 30 minutes with an Ariens RapidTrak and 30 minutes with the new Honda HSS1332 - you pick the Ariens everytime. I've used an Ariens 10-28 for 30 years in Mount Shasta with approximately 80 inches of snow per year on a big sloped driveway. It won't break down, but I'm 70 now, so I want a machine that will be easier on me, and you've sold me on Rapidtrak. BUT I can't decide between the 24 and 28. Would a new Rapidtrak 24 carry the load of my 30 year old 10-28 wheeled? Thanks!
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Год назад
The Platinum 28 RapidTrak is the best match to your 10-28. 14 inch auger impeller, 369cc engine, 77 tons per hour capacity. Throws up to 55 feet. You will really enjoy how easy it is to use - especially in the wheel mode. The Ariens 24 Compact RapidTrak is a much smaller machine and I don't recommend it for 80 inches a year. 11 inch auger/impeller, 223cc engine, (about 7 HP) 59 tons per hour capacity. Throws up to 40 feet. Because of the smaller width, smaller impeller and smaller engine it will take you 30-40% longer to clear the same area.

@@PaulSikkema Went ahead and got the 24 before i read your reply! I'm still torn between which one would I'd be happiest with in the long run. You're correct about the twenty four taking longer. The advantage of the twenty four is i've got lots of tight spaces to deal with. Also, I can turn the twenty four 360 degrees in my tiny shed. Another factor is since I'm 70, I've got lots of time, and snowblowing with this rapidtrak is FUN.

Does the trigger pull have a pressure type of feel to it? Meaning, can I only squeeze one trigger a little bit to go around a curve per se? Thanks for the detailed video. Very helpful indeed.
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Год назад
No, trigger steering uses "dogs" to release the side you want to pivot on. It takes a little getting used to but to make a long shallow turn/curve you will have to pull the trigger quickly for a second every few feet of travel. The snowblower then pivots a little (or as long as you pull the trigger) In other words it's a digital (on/off) instead of analog (variable) system.

Are there any snow blowers out there that you can push Down on the handlebars And lift and lock the front so you can do gravel driveways without adjusting the skid shoes. And then drop it back down when you are on a blacktop surface because I have both
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
Some owners do it with their tracked snowblower but - although that sounds good in theory, it's not practical unless you have a perfectly smooth gravel driveway. No potholes, ridges or grooves where you normally drive. Most of wheeled snowblowers today are balanced so that you can easily lift up the front and turn - the tracked versions are the same. What that means is when the front of a tracked machine is raised up all the weight is balanced on the tracks. So when the track goes through a dip or over a bump the movement on the front end is multiplied. So, the auger housing will be constantly raising up or digging into the gravel. If you have both gravel and a hard surface you are better off adjusting the skid shoes with about 3/8 inch clearance. That will allow you to clean the gravel (once it's frozen) well and also clean the hard surface adequately. Another option is to get the RapidTrak and run it with in the wheeled mode on gravel. There is very little weight on the front in that mode and I find that it won't dig into gravel or turf. Because of it's design even with little weight up front it still won't ride up in deep snow.

What are your thoughts on snowblower attachments to tractors? My driveway is about 10 feet wide by 135 long, with a small slope. I am really inclined toward the Ariens RapidTrack.... but some of the tractors’ snowblowers are pretty nice as well...
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 года назад
Lawn tractor snowblowers are awkward to use and don't have near the capacity of the Ariens RapidTrak. If you had 250 feet of driveway and didn't get more than 10 inches or so of snow then it's worth having this discussion but otherwise unless you are a "gearhead" who likes to tinker I don't recommend them. A few things to know: 1. You need a lawn or garden tractor with a cast iron front axle. A regular, cheap lawn tractor won't hold up. 2. You need rear weights and tire chains. Adding the rear weight can overload many yard tractor transmissions. 3. Don't even try to match up a used snowblower to your tractor. There are still a lot of snowblowers laying around from the 90's and early 2000's but they WILL not fit on anything newer than a 2005 lawn tractor. 4. Don't try to cross-brand. No one makes adapter to fit one brand of snowblower to a different brand tractor. As an example, John Deere makes a snowblower for their tractors. It will not fit on a Craftsman, Husqvarna or MTD. 5. In other words you really have to buy new, the same brand as your tractor and your tractor has to be fairly new.

It's the same machine as the DR Power snowblowers. They are ALL made in China! Generac owns DR Power so it makes sense they would buy the same snowblower and put their name on it. You may want to ask your local DR Power dealer if they will service it before you buy that snowblower.

@PaulSikkema

The Honda HSS928ATD. is the comparable model to these. Engines: Honda 270 cc , Ariens 420 cc, Toro 420 cc Throwing distance: Honda 52 feet, Ariens/Toro 60 feet Capacity (Published): Honda 57 tons per hour, Ariens 79 tons per hour, Toro not listed but close to Ariens Drive: Honda Hydro with slow speed, low clearance 2 point tracks. Ariens Hydro with high clearance, high speed RapidTrak, Toro hydro with high clearance, 3-point, high speed tracks. Handles wet/heavy snow: Honda with chute modification kit, Ariens /Toro can handle any type of snow including slush. Where they are made: Honda, Ariens, Toro snowblowers are made in the U.S.A. Honda AX, Ariens, Toro engines are made overseas. Reputation: Honda: The older Honda HS series snowblower and AX engines gave Honda a stellar reputation. The new HSS series we are talking about here - not so much. Honda has had a few "glitches" with the hydro transmissions and clogging on heavy/wet snow. The electric chute control is slow. We'll see if the electric chute control and hydraulic strut for the height adjustment gives it problems later on. Ariens: Ariens had a "glitch" with the first residential AutoTurn but the snowblower in this test has not had any issues and I don't expect it to have any. It's much faster and easier to use than the Honda. Toro: This Toro is brand new and the only thing that gives me ANY concern is the hydro. (This is the first time this hydro has been used on a 3-point track drive) You have to move up to the HSS1332ATD to get the same performance as this Ariens or Toro. But it costs $300-$500 more and it's still slower.
