St. Mary's Church (Church of South India) (also known as the “Westminster Abbey of the East”) is the oldest British building in India located at Shankar Road and Rajaji Road, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was built between 1678 and 1680 on the orders of the Agent of Madras Streynsham Master and named after Saint Mary in October 1680. The tombstones in its graveyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. The first wedding recorded in the church was of Elihu Yale and Catherine Elford on 4 November 1680. The name of the city was changed from “Madras,” to “Chennai,” in 1996.
Incorporated in 1688, the Greater Chennai Corporation is the oldest municipal corporation of India and the second oldest in the world after London, England.
The region was once part of the Chola, Pandya, Pallava and Vijayanagara Kingdoms during previous eras. The coastal land which then contained the fishing village Madrasapattinam, was purchased by the British East India Company from the Nayak ruler Chennapa Nayaka in the 1600s. The British garrison established the Madras city and port, and built Fort St. George, the first British fortress in India. The city was made the winter capital of the Madras Presidency, a colonial province of the British Raj in the Indian subcontinent. After India gained its independence in 1947, Madras continued as the capital city of the Madras State and present-day Tamil Nadu.
Tamil is the major language spoken by the Chennai's population with English spoken largely by white-collar workers. Chennai's population is majority Hindu (80.73%) with 9.45% Muslim, 7.72% Christian, 1.27% others and 0.83% with no religion or not indicating any religious preference.
