Looks like you still have an awesome garden in the winter time thank you for this great December garden tour I really enjoyed to see what you’ve collected it always looks like there’s always something at your place to eat never going hungry that is my goal to start putting in more gardens and growing more things around I live in Southern California so I could grow something all the time like you even in the winter are winners are not that cold they’re pretty mild most of the time most the time our temperature here is between 50 and 60° sometimes it gets up to 70 or 80° also we do not have coal better winners we never have snow Looks like we have a few leads to clean up in the garden I know but you’ll have this garden looking beautiful and no time hugs and kisses from grandma Sandy thank you for another awesome

Good ideas and reminders for a semi-novice Far NorCali (9a) gardener. I too have many citrus, both established and new they are most reliable producers. Dozen plus young avos and starting mangos (marginal in my climate at best) plus a litany of stone fruits.

Hi Angela! Thanks so much for this channel, and your site! I've used it extensively for our first Phoenix raised bed gardens - and we are doing great! We are growing Lettuce (many varieties), peas, carrots, celery, spinach, broccoli rhab, bunching and bulb onions, tomatoes (not so much luck here, but we received 4 transplants as gifts too late in the year and put them out in mid-October - temps are already below 55 so I don't expect any harvest this year. We are also growing cilantro, fennel, dill, and nasturiums and marigolds. Whew! I have some questions though- mainly about how the heck to manage my watering (I can never tell if it is too much or not enough) and although I haven't lost anything, our peas show definite signs of overwatering - we are using soakers and watering once a week for 35 min. We also "carpet bombed" our beds when planting, so that is a learning opp there as well! Using your calender and just ordered another as a Xmas gift for my sister! : )

Hi Angela, I have been enjoying your videos. Your voice and video really makes me relax and at the same time think about what I should do for my garden. In this video (time stamp 2:37), i noted your romaine lettuces also had some damages on the top portion. I have been having the same issue. I thought they were eating by rats/mouse, so I set up some traps, but i didn't catch anything. I thought maybe it's birds, but I don't get many birds in my back yard, I think. Can you please let me know what you did to control the pests for the top damaged romaine lettuces? Thank you for all your growing tips!

Probably birds - If I notice damage, barrier methods are usually most effective.

I'm from the southern part of NM and I've been able to follow most of your tips(we live in the hot dry desert) but I'm noticing a big difference in this video and wondering if we get colder where I am? Our tomatoes and other nightshades were taken by the cold beginning of Nov and its WAY too cold to put tomatoes or peppers in the ground in February and march. I find that really interesting!

Sounds like you do get colder. We get one / two frost events a year and can usually cover plants to protect them. Occasionally we will get a longer, colder freeze.

If we get a heavy rain, trees and shrubs may not need supplemental watering. If not, water shrubs and trees no more than once every 14-28 days. Wateruseitwisely.com is a helpful resource for landscape watering guidelines.

Do you have variety recommendations of broccoli and cauliflower? I tend to grow very nice broccoli plants that only produce little broccoli shoots. Thank you for all the information for us in the Phoenix area.

Broccoli - these all get nice heads plus side shoots after the main harvest: Green Goliath tolerates warmer temperatures and sprouts side shoots. DeCicco is a compact variety with many side shoots. Calabrese, a prolific Italian variety, has many side shoots. I've had good success with snowball cauliflower.

Lovely garden as usual. Can you tell me which white marker you use to label your plant. I use the one that came with my metal garden label and they all washed off with the rain. Thank goodness I left the wooden label in place. 💕

When did you start your seeds for your kale,peas and book choy, did you direct sow them? Everything looks so healthy. I was late sowing my seeds so they are all still very small. I am growing peas for the first time, should I trim them to encourage branching out or just leave them?

Bok Choy was started from seed in September. Most of my kale was grown from transplants this year, and planted the last several weeks. The peas during the planting section of the video are from last year. My peas are very small. I've never trimmed to encourage branching, but you could depending on what you are growing it on and how many plants you have.

What tips do you have for starting seeds indoors? I know that late December is typically when we should be starting tomatoes and peppers here in Phoenix, but as a beginner gardener, I'm not too sure what my set up should look like. Do you use plastic grow trays or bio-degradable ones? What type of grow light would you recommend? Thanks!

How do you keep the sun from killing everything? I am new to gardening and live in Mesa. Last summer I attempted a raised bed and the sun killed all my seedlings. I did take them out to get them used to the sun over the course of a week and they were growing great right up to June July. I have since moved my bed to a total shaded location and will try again this year. I’ve been noticing the plants in containers growing better in the shade even now in January, the ones that get sun for 6 hours are showing sun damage. I am just trying to grow various pepper plants.

Don't be afraid of the sun. Focus on your soil, make sure your beds are deep enough (at least 12-15 inches) . Water well. Peppers can grow pretty well here in our climate. Look for an area that gets morning sun.

How do you water established plants along with seeds on the bed with the same watering grid?

I often hand water with a hose until seeds sprout. Once they sprout and send down roots they can usually go about as long between watering as the established plants.

Given the price of wood do you think a cinderblock raised bed would work here in az? No mortar just rebar and leveling the ground.

If you do it wide enough and deep enough. The cinderblock retains heat quite a bit . I wouldn't go any smaller than 4 feet wide and 18-24" deep.

I have serious strawberry envy! my poor strawberries! they grow new leaves which start browning at the edges and eventually are completely brown. is this too much sun? or my water? they look gorgeous when I put them in the ground and then just seem to struggle. I am in tempe. thoughts?

Could be sun, watering or your soil. They prefer slightly acidic soil and often ours in the valley is more alkaline.

I see your garlic is up. I planted garlic in November in SE Texas and now it's all up. Thought it was to early because it needs a dormancy period. Perhaps for further north. Do you have any thoughts on taking care of it over the winter?

It depends on the type you plant. Hard neck varieties are best in cold climates. I plant soft neck and they begin growing right away. I keep them watered as needed and feed once or twice. I'm so sorry. What is your soil like? That makes a big difference. Try to plant in an area that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Gardening can be challenging for sure.

Where do you live. ? I moved from Friendswood TX, im in San Tan Valley, and the soil here is very alkaline, so plants do not thrive. Did you see how she transform her garden? That was a chunk of money! just to get compost here, for me the cost is $800, ! so im stuck..... Im disable and cannot do a lot of digging..... so be patient,..... do your planting in containers, start small.....

This channel definitely offers good info and ideas for our AZ desert climate. But I don't have anywhere near her space or budget. As a new gardener, I found Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy. Robbie shows a very easy, non-fussy way to set up a raised bed garden with compost in place, on the cheap in plastic storage totes on chairs. She lives in southern CA zone 10a. I have 4 ready to go on my tiny villa patio in southern AZ zone 9a-b. Gardening is fun but challenging so try a variety of RU-vid channels to find one that inspires and works for you. And most of all, don't give up! 😊
