Hello from Houston! In addition to the ones you mentioned, perpetual spinach laughs at high temps (it did great in 100-110f summer and also in an 18F cold snap (covered). It is also very tasty; I use it to substitute for celery and spinach. Egyptian and Longevity spinach also like the heat. I grew a bunch of determinate tomatoes this year to get a big harvest before we hit triple digits.

I live in TX and keep trying to grow tomatoes. It's too cool for them in the spring and too hot for them in the summer. So I try to keep them alive for a fall harvest. I've had better luck with cherry tomatoes than anything else. This spring has been wonderful with cooler temps and lots of rain. I actually have some Early Girls with tomatoes this year.

This year I'm going to set up a water system where I get the waste water from cleaning off veggies and fruit and then I'll dump that into my wicking beds. And then I'll take the water from the wicking bed to water other parts of my garden (I'm on a hill so I have an upper garden and a lower garden). With about 6 people in the house all the time that will add up to a lot of water!

Yes some days it does seem impossible. It's the tomatoes I every year I say I'm not going to grow tomatoes anymore and every year I try started them real early figuring that by the time the heat comes I would have already gotten a bunch of tomatoes and guess what nope. Starting them early just had them growing very slowly cuz the sun is so low then they start to make tomatoes right now when it's way too hot and the leaves are curling so I rigged up some poles gave them shade but at this point just not worth growing tomatoes I'll stick with the other things. Other things I mean kale in the winter salad in the winter pigeon peas Scarlet runner beans are doing great My green grapes are doing great I'll just stick with that stuff

One of your best videos. Applies to other locations. In southern New Mexico just put some 40% shade cloth over some tomatoes yesterday even though it’s not 100 yet. I use 8 foot T-post to attach my shade cloths. I’ll remember about the no fertilizing over 100. I’ll have to rewatch and take notes.

Relaxing enjoying the vid. Came to mind about deep watering. Carrots are probably one of the deepest roots any of my veg. 8 inches or so. Most of the roots on leafy greens are in the top 4 inches. No one likes to say too much on watering. Too many variables I guess. Like the water an inch a week. You need to calculate that to get close. How easy would it be is someone would say...water plant A 4 pints a week...for example. My weather is usually very hot and dry in weird sandy soil.

San Antonio grower here. One thing I struggle with is the dichotomy of mulch. Yes, absolutely our soil wouldn’t survive without it, however, I feel like it works against me at the same time. It almost works as a sponge and prevents water from getting to the soil. We will get a half inch or so of rain and I feel like the places that have mulch don’t receive any of the benefit from the lighter rains. Same with my drip irrigation. I have to water for a VERY long time for it to penetrate through the mulch and get to the soil.
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden Месяц назад
I've been putting my drips under my mulch and that helps. We don't get a lot of summer rain. You may need to experiment and find a happy medium depending on your needs and what works for your garden.

Taking notes 📝 and re-watching. What is the warm temperature range and the hot temp range? I’m in Peoria AZ. I used 30% shade cloth last year and even the cactus fried, so maybe a heavier shade this year? I’m also wondering about adding compost - it’s almost ready but I realized I didn’t know how to add it to the containers with plants already in them. Spread on the top? Pull out some of the top soil and mix in? Thanks so much for your great videos and shorts - they’re organized and easy to understand. Fingers crossed for a milder summer this year!!

You have full sun for basil and melons.I followed this advice from here and others, and my Basil and melons died a toasted death. As I have a south facing patio that my outdoor thermometer regularly shows well over 100 without shade, I now have both a cantilevered umbrella that I use sometimes (but it blocks too much light at times, but on the 110 degree days its needed), but I've now put up 40-50% shade cloth in 3 parts across the patio. As I can't cover it all, but it gives most of the deck coverage to give my plants a break during the worst of the day. I just wish this "advice" wouldn't be so inaccurate or even wrong. When you have a nice yard with deep beds, the ground itself is insulating. That's why animals dig just a little down and lay in the shallow hole on hot days. I now have to take all this "advice" with a pound of salt. But it costs LOTS of money to listen to it and its wrong and you have to start all over again after learning the hard way. But that you were trying to avoid by taking said "advice".

Thank you the guy at the nursery told me I was gonna have to fertilize it and I didn’t because I didn’t feel right about it. I have compost and mulch so I will go that route!

I’m having a hard time with ants right now. I’m also in Mesa. Do you, or anyone, have any tips to help with this?

So now that the temperatures are rising, my bush beans seem to be done for this season. Do I pull the plants and start over with new seeds for a fall garden? Or do I keep watering the plants through the summer and protect them from the heat? Will they produce again or once a plant is done, it’s done? And I have lots of tomatoes on the vine but they never seem to ripen before the harsh heat. I have only gotten two off the vine. Same question. Do I let the plants go dormant for the summer or do I pull them and start with new ones after summer?

Plant new beans. See how the tomatoes do, they may take off again in the fall, you have to wait and see. You can bring tomatoes in to ripen: growinginthegarden.com/turning-green-tomatoes-red-4-ways-to-ripen-green-tomatoes/
