I personally feel pretty much the same way about it. There is nothing of the lore of Ark from the notes. Except maybe names. The story of Ark, told through the notes in game, was already inclusive. It didn't need this. Diana and Mei Yin love story was good the way it was written in the notes. The Rockwell story from the notes painted a tale of an already borderline man's descent into full madness. For a villain in a game, he was so well worked out and developed in those notes. They took all the real depth out of the story that was told in the lore of Ark. It's a shame.
@@Drakromdemon I get 'personal opinion', but when something is derived from an already set story/lore and something wearing its name comes out and it literally nothing like the lore...subjective goes out the window almost instantaneously. I'm not even a fan of the Ark game; never played it, really watched or followed any gameplay, and most likely won't play it (although I've had mild interest in doing so), but this whole show is just objectively bad from the start. After just one episode, it's beyond clear that "the message" is it's sole purpose, and all other is just half-assed filler pushed out to soak in ESG money. Even taking all the woke nonsense out, the show on its face is quite lackluster and poorly written. Things don't make any sense, actions are just random, "evil" people are just no-purpose bad just to have antagonists to conquer and the whole animals are just instantly drawn to Helena is such a feeble uneducated in anything outdoors and natural crap fantasy. The artistry is phenomenal, but that's very easy to do these days however. So that's moot, honestly. It's like saying a new 4k movie looks so good...when everything else is 4k too.
They could have easily just have a simple start that would have kept everyone interested in the first show. Helena could have been out at sea researching a new found species that harkens back to the Jurassic age. While at sea, the ship gets beset by a terrible storm and gets hit by a rogue wave. As the ship goes down, Helena sees an island in the distance. Then nothing. (Not knowing she died) she now wakes up on a strange island. Then… JUST FOLLOW THE EXPLORER NOTES FOR THE STORY!!!! In the notes she pieces together that she is in a “zoo”. Took me 2 minutes to come up with this starting. And we don’t need DEI indoctrination. Then again, when you’re a struggling franchise you’ll do anything for money. 😂😅 Nice tip to Critical Drinker my friend.
Agreed. Honestly, I've already said my opinion multiple times here- But that's just that. One opinion. In a sea of billions. Anyway, yeah it'd get more people into ARK AND it'd make the story of ark far easier to access, because you've gotta collect 100s of survivor's notes just to somewhat piece together a story. Meanwhile, if you had a show, it'd make it far easier to understand and learn the story of the game.
Or if they did want their sedoku enclined Ethnically diverse genetic-deadendus/lesbican, just make it a group of survivors that came AFTER Helena's generation of survivors, the ones we play complete with the respawn mechanic, and people who have various responses to it with People like Bob being Meh since they die so often and are essentially desensitized to it to someone who is completely terrified of it even though they only died once Mariane Sew wakes up on the beach, is found by bob and then meets a group of other survivors and tribes up with them and after finding some explorer notes they go on a quest to find somewhere to set up a home base and collect more notes, learning about the bosses, artifacts and taming dinos along the way. they could have Bob be a kind of gag character who is killed in various ways every episode with each of the most common ways Ark players die, with his first death being something expositional about why you dont remove the Implant: the group sets up camp, sharing all their time periods and having the same thing of Was doing X in Y time and then the next thing I know I wake up on a beach with a compy nibbling my toes and this thing itching like crazy, By the way dont try to take that thing out, followed with Mariane Sew being like why and cue bob sticking his flint knife under it and then falling on his face dead, emerging from his thatch shelter and reclaiming all his tools from his body with a "because that's why" and then dragging his own corpse away into the bushes.

Several issues I found were: Rockwell - why is he immediately a villain? I much preferred his story as per the explorer notes, with his slow descent into madnes, even being a friend to Helena at first. They approached his character completely wrong and ruined it, such a shame since they have such a good VA for him too. The language barriers - I'm sure I read somewhere in the lore that the crystals embedded in their arms allowed them to understand each other's native tongue? I'd much rather they use that plot device than the fact everyone conveniently speaks fluent english, it just threw me off Mei Yin - mostly a good character, but when she kissed Helena I would've stopped watching if that had happened in any of the prior episodes. Why?? Helena and Mei YIn were amazing friends, and now we won't get to see Mei Yin's relationship with Diana unless they add in a love triangle which would ruin the show even further. It's adding in a romance for the sake of it, one that completely deviates from the lore and ruins the tone of their relationship with one another in my opinion. Would've much rather seen her with Diana as is in the lore (Also I WANT TO SEE HER AND HER GIGA) The explorer notes - why the hell did they not just stick with the explorer notes. I would've happily accepted seeing them animated word for word and it'd still probably be a more enjoyable watch. I found the new story to be cringy, farfetched and strange - it feels like half the dialogue was just cut randomly, half the conversations they just suddenly jump to a point. Hopefully part 2 is a lot better since I only really enjoyed a couple of the episodes and scenes. They did do a good job getting the feel of each biome, though. I liked the fact it showed off a lot of niche dinos you'd expect them to cut, such as dimetrodons, purlovias and Nerva's daeodon. Hoping we get to see more flying mounts like Alasie's pteranodon (although it also really bugged me they were camping in the redwood and we didn't see one bloody thylacoleo, those things are my immediate association with that biome)
@@Myne1001 Yeah Nerva is probably the only character who I liked overall, he was lore accurate, realistic and a well rounded character. Rockwell's character has potential when he starts going crazy but it won't mean half as much since he's not had the same beginnings. The thing that made the betrayal so deep was the fact he and helena were close, instead he's just a dick. Also his character was pretty sexist at times or at least it seemed like it, which whilst it would be appropriate for his era it still just dragged his character down cause in the notes he was a gentleman. In the show he's a cunt.

Yes, I agree. The original story conveyed a very positive message and did a fantastic job of representing an underrepresented demographic without making the message its primary focus but this is so in your face you cant not see it for what it is.

y'all missed the fact that they raced swapped helena, and put john onto the island when he is supposed to be on scorched. hollywood also slims stories down, they likely merged helena with diana as a mia love interest. after all they already showed tech rifle and have yet to get to aberration
Helena was always Australian, it was never stated if she was white or of abroginal descent. And, for that sake- she's mixed, her father is white, her mother is abroginal.

Even though I love the story of ARK as it is in the game I don't have a problem with them changing stuff, if it is still enjoyable. The series overall is for me a sort of "meh ok" I like a few of moments like the guy riding a purlovia beacause I always wanted to see that and it is not possible in the game. My biggest issue with the series is most definetly how they portrayed Sir Edmund Rockwell. He is such a fascinating character in the Notes and the show totally ruined him. Same goes for most charcaters who are not original ones but it is particulary bad when it comes to Rockwell.
Completely agree. Helena is similar to her game self, just less science and more surviving through pure luck. Mei Yin is just more anime-ish version. Nerva is pretty much the same. But Rockwell...literally ruined the whole thing. And considering Jesse was saying a character's arc was "inverted" from the game's story, there's a good chance tentacle monster Rockwell in Aberration is not happening. Instead just a "bad guy turns good" stereotype. Literally unwatchable.
@@narrowwing Yeah, I mean... I gave this show a chance, but at the second episode I was already skipping the flashbacks and I totally gave up at the third for how many stupid decisions the characters were making (with the show pretending they were right, just because everything worked, at the end).

I agree with you there although by halfway through first episode I was skipping flashbacks. It seemed alright and good by the last episode but I just don't know if it's enough to redeem the damage they already have done. Korr in the second season may redeem it but I will not be paying a subscription services or watching in any way that supports this show financially at all.

I like Drinker nod too lol Unlike you though I subjected myself to all 6 episodes and the changes they made didn’t slow down, whether it was introducing characters that were never on the Island but were on other Arks or just making up new characters. Even changed some of the creatures in Ark all together, Arthropleura is the size of a regular centipede not the monster you can saddle like it is in the game. I can forgive some of the changes that they made, only three artifacts needed instead of ten, I get that change, but there’s no need to do most of the changes that they did. I had so many high hopes for this… I figured it would be pretty easy to do because the story was already laid out for them and they could have done each season centered around a different Ark. I think that would have worked out better. But what do I know, I’m just a fan.
I had so many thoughts after watching eps 1-6 that I could probably write an essay. There were things I really liked, and things I loathed. I found that to enjoy the series at all I had to completely shut my brain off from the game and see it as its own thing. The trouble is: it's NOT its' own thing, really. It's meant as a prequel to the game from what we were told. But it isn't even internally consistent with game lore. Eps 1-2 weren't so bad: I actually was quite excited watching Helena team up with Mei Yin to explore the island. I thought "OK, so we're taking a different angle but still exploring the same thing. Clearly this is after Nerva destroyed all her beasts. Unorthodox but ok." NOPE. The next 4 episodes were almost all about the side characters introduced for the series. They're nowhere near as compelling. The more time passes after watching the less and less I can enjoy the series. Some changes I thought were fair game. Not much is said about Helena's ethnicity and romantic life, so I was perfectly happy to see that explored as it pertained to her character. She's frightened of conflict because of her experiences and from the fact that her wife was murdered after going into a warzone. Cool. I found her romance with Victoria quite sweet, actually, and I thought that it might potentially put a spin on her determination to bring back Diana for Mei Yin later, sparing her best friend from the agony of losing a loved one as she did. PUTTING HER IN A ROMANCE WITH MEI YIN THOUGH. NOPE. NO NO NO. And UGH they made her spout off the most NONSENSICAL BULLSHIT. Almost none of Helena's assertions are based in any logical assumption she could make. I was all for her using her biology knowledge to get a leg up but it has to actually be knowledge, you know? Not making it up like a kid changing the rules of checkers. I had so many rants about Mei Yin. I was SO upset by the end. Why does the BEAST QUEEN NOT HAVE WUZHUI?!?! WHERE IS HER SPECIAL BOY? WHERE ARE HER DINOSAURS? WHY DON'T WE EXPLORE HER BOND WITH THE T-REX?! THERE IS NO IMPACT TO ITS DEATH BECAUSE SHE DOES ONE THING WITH HIM VS GLADIATRIX AND NOTHING ELSE. MEI YIN WAS NOT A PERSON WHO ORGANIZED ALLIANCES, SHE WAS A DISFUNCTIONAL HERMIT WITH AN INSTINCTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF BEASTS AND NOT PEOPLE. They gave Helena Mei's ability with creatures just like they gave Nirva her Demon King. (Yes. They gave Nirva the Giga, not Mei Yin. Hahaha SOB.) She's got beef with Nerva but it's never explained. Why?! Why not use the time they spent on side characters for this?! Rockwell...ugh. All I can say is LOOK how they massacred my boy. T_T Where is the charm? Where is the courage? Where was the science? Where was the kindness and generosity? Where was his literary Foil with Helena? Where was his clever, honeyed poison being dripped into Nirva's ear? Where was his political neutrality and diplomacy? Where were the SUBTLE hints at callousness in how he treated his test subjects? Why did they make him a sniveling, misogynistic, Claude Frollo wannabe?!!!! He was supposed to be a genius diplomat who wanted to learn for the betterment of humanity, and yes for his personal glory. He became a villain when he let his narcissism overcrowd his best traits and fell into obsession. Here he's just.... just pathetic. I can't ever see the setup that they have leading to the HEARTWRENCHING endings he faced in Aberration and Genesis 2. And MAN, Nirva!!! Why did we make him a psychopath? Where is the discipline and courage that inspired the loyalty of his men? We see he has them, why do they fight for him? Where is his desire to make an empire on the island for future generations to inherit? Why is he coo-coo-for-cocoa-puffs on his own and not because Rockwell is manipulating him? Why does he keep Rockwell around when the man does nothing except, apparently, betray military enemies for Nirva? Why did they give his rivalry for and hatred of Mei Yin to Helena? Nirva was pleasant and reasonable with Helena but never cared one way or another about her beyond what knowledge she could give him. The stupid fucking side characters... John with his needless and pointless parent-child forced conflict bullshit. Daughter What's Her Face (Alasie?). Why does this character exist? Literally, why. Teaching Helena archery could and should have been given to Mei Yin. Daddy Daughter conflict is pointless and sucks up time that was dearly needed elsewhere. She does literally nothing else important. And how were there NOT ENOUGH DINOSAURS IN THE DINOSAUR GAME ANIME?! They totally set up a comparison between how a dino is treated making a massive difference: why didn't they do more with this???? Why why completely get rid of Mei Yin's beasts and avoid showing how hers are happy, well treated, and loved? Nirva's giga comes on, all dramatic, kills our two rexes, FAILS utterly to do anything to help kill John, and then dies unceremoniously. Where is the DEMON KING? Where is the terror and reverence and wary respect enemy gigas are given in game? Ark is about using dinosaurs. Where are the FUCKING dinosaurs?!?!! Why the language barriers? Have them speak their native languages with subtitles, but SHOW THE IMPLANT TRANSLATING. The characters should have understood one another and it could've been ANOTHER clue to the mysteries of the island. It makes less sense for everyone to speak English for convenience sake. (Although Mei Yin's quip was pretty fucking funny, lets be honest.) I think people are right to dislike it, but people are deflecting that dislike onto the wrong things. Sure, go ahead and write backstories for the characters before they were spawned onto the ARKs. That is important because those memories shape how they will act. But for god's sake if you're going to change the story at least change it for the better! The only comfort is that the game's lore is still there. Completely separate. Much like when a book is adapted to film: the book still exists. It always will. Nothing can change it.
It’s honestly pretty fun. I mean the fact they didn’t follow the notes from the get go sure, it was kinda sad but this show is still a fun watch. It adds new flavor and it’s own kind of excitement. Besides this is just 6 episodes out of 14 and maybe another 14 next season should they make it. There’s barely anything to talk about

Every female character in the main cast is a Mary Sue. Rockwell is just a comically evil coward. Nerva is a badass but he also doesn’t have much depth. All the new characters that were not in the game were decent but felt like filler. Honestly it was just so poorly written all around. I liked the dinosaurs and the music was great. But I doubt most people who like the game lore will like it.

I will be honest, I wasn't looking forward to Helena when the show was first revealed, why? because they completely threw off what made her such an engaging character in the games to win points with a target audience that wasn't their loyal players. I could have very easily overlooked that if they kept most of the story the same but they changed way too much. I have no idea why they changed the story so much since if it followed the in-game story they could have had a story that the players were dying to see and come back again and again to watch. But this, I think most Ark players will watch it once and be done with it.

I mostly agree with all of this, minus the whole 'message' thing. I think Helena being LGBTQ is okay, but the way they went about it was just not good. Gotta love flashbacks every four fucking minutes. I think it could've been a good plot point, because when Mei-Yin loses Diana, Helena could empathize and relate, possibly making the viewer care more for the characters as well as driving the characters arcs forward, building up to the heart wrenching (imo) death of Mei-Yin and the ascension of Helena to Homodeus. What do I know though, I'm just an amateur writer.
Also: Do not watch the show if you're a fan of the game. Just don't. Don't torture yourself like I and many others did by watching it. 3/10 would not watch again. Edit: I would also like to let everyone know you are entitled to your own opinions. And to have a great day. I think the show is good, but it definitely could’ve been better. While I did not like that they made Rockwell overly bad from when we first see him, he could’ve been more like his in game version within the canon of the series, but the relationship between him and helena was so important, so I do miss that. They also focused a bit too much on character back stories, especially Mei-Yin’s, you could almost have half an episode if you string them all together. (Sidenote of people complaining about characters, acting in ways that aren’t appropriate to where they come from, remember they’ve been on the island for so long that they changed and evolved. ) I understand changes have to be made when adapting a piece of media to another medium, but they didn’t have to make it so palatable to the main stream public. But it definitely needed more episodes and each episode needed more meat to savor, like the first episode, which I think was the best. But I do appreciate all the work that was put into this by the workers.
I have to agree with you on this. Ark had a good story, and this was the perfect chance to flesh it out and really bring it to life. Instead, they turned it into a poorly done 80's cartoon with more blood and ham-fisted attempts at inclusion. The fact that Rockwell and Helena were friends made him becoming more obsessed and twisted until he became a literal monster was a great story and an obvious shock for Helana since he was good at hiding his unsavory intentions. Now, they turned him into a bad cartoon villain from the outset. And who hires someone like Karl Urban to voice a character you kill in the first 5 minutes?! What's worse is it looks like they are going to make Helena into the one who figures out real taming instead of the great Beast Queen... So they are obviously making Helena into a Mary Sue instead of someone who changes and grows through real hardship, heartbreak and despair into someone able to ascend. I'm astonished Vin Disel is willing to have his name on it...

I was done with snail and wildcard when they announced screwing over the ASE players for their cash grab. It's nothing but a train wreck with that bunch, and this show proves it. I have no desire to watch this crap show that to be honest should've been written and voiced by their community. Seriously. I gave this show way too many chances, but it outrages me with stupid things every 2 seconds. Just think about the little details, for instance. The main character is literally Korra from the last season (really original). The only difference is that tuft of hair between her eyes that Never EVER goes away, not even when she gets out of water and moves the wet hair away from her face. I guess they think "that's personality", like a scar, or something.

everyones gripe with this show goes along the line of "too woke" whenit barely takes up more than half an episode in the entire series but somehow thats enough to warrant calling the show shit
The whole show is too woke. Not just the flashbacks that hit you over the head with it. The female characters are OP Mary Sues with plot armor through the roof. The males are either evil, irrelevant, or dead. The overall story is just poorly written with inconsistent pacing and no real direction.

The males are the enemies there, too...while the girls actually know what they are doing or/and have character growth...none of them were weak. It's not the series fault Nerva and Rockwell aren't nice or Mei Jin is an impressive character and knows what she is doing...so most of your comment doesn't even make sense. Except the pacing part.
@@Akefia The original story in the game at least had some interesting character dynamics. The male characters actually had depth. Rockwell wasn’t just a bland caricature of evil, he was a scientist and Helena’s friend who slowly descended into madness. And the female characters were not Mary Sues in the game. Meiyin is stupidly overpowered to the point it’s absolutely ridiculous in the show. Helena has just pure luck again and again with no real character growth whatsoever. They both have so much plot armor it’s hilariously lazy writing. Everything I just said made sense to anyone who actually knows anything about storytelling.

But what does it matter that she's gay? Really, I don't understand why that would ruin it for you, and apparently others. Gay people exist. Dinosaurs, by the way, do not. Also, it's TV-14, so I don't think it's meant to be a family show.
I know the “G” word can be touchy… still we cannot deny Ark story line and explorer notes have no hint of G word. It ruins it for us because it is added not Ark story. Right?
Well, I personally liked that they were fleshing out Helena's character. I hated more personally how they went about it with FLASHBACKS.. EVERY.. FIVE.. FUCKING.. MINUTES.. IT RUINS THE PACING! OH! @@justinmason5307 - Well the explorer notes never say she's hetero, or in a relationship with a man, either. The person who originally created her in the game may have envisioned her as being gay. We have no idea. So to say it was "added" to ark seems a stretch when they were simply just building up her character ark. Anyway, you don't have to defend yourself. I'm just genuinely surprised that people care about this. I mean, turn 007 gay and I might have a problem. But in this case, I literally just don't understand why it's important to people who this fictional character loves on a romantic level. Homosexuality is as old as the human species itself. It's like, get over it already.

If your main problem with a show is that it took 3 minutes to show, IN A FLASHBACK a character's mother going to protest, a main character being gay and there being too diverse a cast... then you didn't even care about the show to begin with, you just nitpicked aspects to complain about
I can understand that you didn't like it, but what did you fricken expect. I am sorry but for an animated series it is a great show. Many things you say are wrong for exemple the raptors turned on their owner because they were kept in a constant state of hunger, as rockwell say "conditioning". Anyway I really liked this tv show. So please don't make people not watch it.
