Operators of Rhodes Island, led by Dokutah, stormed Icecrown Citadel and defeated the Lich Queen's mightiest servants. Atop the spire, the Lich Queen encased Dokutah in a block of ice, forcing him to watch helplessly as his Operators battled the Lich Queen and her minions.
Eventually, the Lich Queen effortlessly killed all the Operators with a single devastating attack. The Lich Queen revealed that she had been waiting for Dokutah's assault all along, knowing that he would bring with her Terra's greatest heroes, who could then be killed and resurrected as powerful masters of the Reunion. Every obstacle she had laid before them was merely part of her test. Now certain Dokutah's operators were "the greatest fighting force this world has ever known", the Lich Queen began to raise the fallen heroes. Before she could finish, Dokutah, calling for a final blessing from the Light, managed to break free and shatter Frostmourne with his own sword, Ashbringer, much to the Lich Queen's shock. The spirits who had been trapped within Frostmourne, including King Patriot, attacked their former jailer by suspending her in the air while simultaneously resurrecting Dokutah's Magallan, who was then able to defeat the Lich Queen.
Patriot's spirit held Frostnova in his arms as she took her last breath, then informed Dokutah that the Reunion must always have a master to control them, before vanishing in the wind. Dokutah picked up the Lich Queen's crown and prepared to take on the burden of becoming the new Lich Queen, when he was stopped by the voice of Magallan. The undead scientist sat upon the Frozen Throne, having been horribly burned by donkeyfire and tortured by Frostnova. Magallan said that she no longer had any place in the world of the living, while Dokutah still had duties to perform. As her final act of service, Magallan would take the powers of the Lich Queen herself, in order to keep the Yeti in check. Dokutah reluctantly placed the crown of the Lich Queen on Magallan's head. As the ice of the Frozen Throne began to envelop her, Magallan - now the new Lich Queen - told Dokutah to tell the world that the Lich Queen is dead, and as her voice changed to one similar of the Lich Queen, added that Magallan died with her and to leave and never return.
