The Soap: Arko Shaving Stick. This Turkish tallow based shaving soap deserves a place at the pantheon of wetshaving. It is a legendary classic soap that creates a beautiful dense, slick and protective lather with ease. The lather is particularly “sticky” leaving what feels like a protective film on the skin reminiscent of Tabac. The scent is an 8/10 strength soapy clean smell, evocative of Ivory soap. At $2-$3 for a stick, it is one of the best value shaving soaps around.
The Razor: Gillette Tech (pre WWII fat handle). The tech was Gillette’s longest running design. Its popularity due to its affordability and ease of use, and smoothness. This razor is on the mild side but still gets the job done. Extremely easy to use and intuitive, it can be enjoyed by anyone, and is perfect for beginners
The Brush: WCS Ancient Stone Collection with 25mm synthetic knot. The knot is extremely soft and dense even among synthetics. Low maintenance and easy to use, and affordable, it is a good choice for beginners.

I agree with your comments regarding the nostalgia point of view of Traditional wet shaving and it's great to have part of a shaving Hobby collection dedicated to what your father/grandfather would have used to shave with. For me I have strong fond memories of my father using a SuperSpeed, Old Spice mug soap and a boar brush. I prefer to bowl lather and I don't tend to buy shave sticks, these days for a nostalgia shave I would use MWF or Tabac with my 1950 SuperSpeed and Tabac or Old Spice splash. The great thing about the wet shaving hobby is you don't need to spend much to get a reasonable setup and don't need to be a full on hobbyist (going down the rabbit hole).

Great video! Started out shaving with a DE razor as a young lad and like most people shifted to the multi-blade option for a good number of years, but when they went from twin blades to three and then four, and the price of blades started to go up and up to where they are now under lock and key…I said that’s it. Inherited my Grandfather's and my Dad's Gillette DE razors, dug them out and never looked back. Best thing I ever did…I now actually look forward to shaving, where as I use to dread the ritual. Full disclosure, I like many have now gone down the wet shaving rabbit hole…and once you do there is no going back. Haven’t tried Arko , but stopped in the middle of the video and ordered some to try out. Thanks and Cheers from a subscriber in Nova Scotia.

Same smell as Ivory soap. I'm not a super fan, but it doesn't bother me. It's a thirsty soap (as is typical of tallow based). I like to soak the stick while I shower and then it's ready to make lots of lather. Pro Tip: buy one of the DIY deodorant twist up style containers. The ones I found (on WCS) fit the stick perfectly, are great for travel, and make handling the stick much easier.

Part of the issue not many of them make hard soap in general - not exactly sure why. Most of the hot process stuff is like a cream or a croap consistancy

Great video, I love Arko, it's a classic shave soap and one of my favorites. I have a 12 pack of them 😮 . Proraso green is my go-to aftershave as well.

Its the best shaving stick and one of the best budget soaps ever! Unfortunatelly not everyone will like this scent but after few shavings can get use to it. For me it smell a bit like a lemon toilet block.

Hi, yes, although so far I've only used the Soap in the red plastic container rather than the Stick. I found the scent/smell to be like a classic or legacy 'Turkish Bath' or a classic Mediterranean feel.

Great video, i love arko but when I first opened it it really smelled like a citronella candle but after using it you have to air it out and the smell goes from like a 10 to like a 3. Great slickness and the tech I use a feather blade and it performs very well

Great shave. Only been wet shaving for 6 months but I haven’t tried any shaving sticks. I started with Proraso and a week later I was into artisans 😂. Love the artisan soaps the most because it is about scent to me as well as performance. Proraso is a great performing soap tho without a doubt. Can’t knock it. I will have to try a shaving stick tho just to say I’ve done it. Maybe Arko as I grew up using Ivory soap as well haha.

Great shave. I love shaving sticks as well, as you say I wish they were more popular. I use your technique but sometimes I'll even roll the stick across my face with the long end, you'll build a lather in record time that way. Arko is unfortunately the only scent I don't really care for (it just smelled so.. plasticy for lack of better description?), but I think Tabac and Mühle are worth looking into as alternatives.

Ogallala makes a bunch of variations of bay rum-scented shave sticks, if you like the scent and get along with clove. Razorock has their Blue/Black/Gold/Green Label shave sticks, too, which I want to pick up. Italian Barber has a great deal on a 4-pack, with all four sticks.

Thanks for the tip. Im a fan of the ogalalla bay rum aftershave it’s very stout. I’m a fan of Palmolive and Speick stick as well .

Another great video and good for those looking to start their journey with traditional wet shaving. Ever since I watch your videos, I always wonder - do you shave everyday Matt? I try to do it, but due to the lack of time in the morning, I have to shave in the evenings. And unfortunately it's hard for me to achieve satisfactory results the next day. My stubble is growing back quickly.

Question : Why do you shave 3 times??

Hi, just to offer you an answer to your question while you await an official reply. The 3 'times' are also known as 'passes'. The 1st 'pass' is 'with the grain' (shaving down the cheeks, moustache, chin and neck) and on it's own can be enough. But it may not be smooth or 'baby smooth' enough for some people due to their stubborn or coarse stubble or just personal preference. The 2nd 'pass' is 'against the grain' either shaving upwards (neck, cheeks, chin, moustache) or 'across the grain' (across the cheeks, chin, moustache and possibly the neck), and the 3rd 'pass' is either 'against 'or 'across the grain' depending on what was done in the 2nd 'pass'. As to how many 'passes' you want to or have to do is up to each individual to choose, there's no rule, etc. Hope that helps.

shave with any bar soap? cut the bar soap up put in a mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, microwave for a minute or so? if it Foam up stop. let cool you just went it to congeal' place in the sun, until soap hardens Larry
