In 1967 they used the arlberg kandahar race in the brand new fis world cup races, however they only used the downhill race for fis points. Before this it was major race on the ski circuit and was always a combined - with both downhill and slalom. Started in 1928 in St Anton by Arnold Lunn and his Kandahar ski club from murren, and Hannes Schneider (the man who taught James Bond to ski) and the Arlberg ski club of St Anton it was the first proper international alpine ski race. After this it went annually from strength to strength and would alternate between Anton, Murren then Chamonix, Sestriere and Garmisch. Chamonix often dropping the arlberg section of the name as they did not want to advertise a rival ski area. It featured in the 1969 classic, no not last of the ski bums but downhill racer with Karl Schranz doubling for Robert Redford skiing. Since the beginning of the fis world cup races it has lost it's former grandeur but the name is kept and used for posterity.
